Cap City League 6/28

SMH. Yea, lets redshirt a role player, at best, in hopes that he can be an EVEN BETTER role player the next year. Jesus, people. It's basketball. Either you can play or you can't. Development like Ejim is the exception. Redshirting a one dimensional two year JUCO is one of the dumber things I've read here. Have you guys seen who we're recruiting?

Coach Hoiberg really can redshirt a player anytime. Even a couple games into the season. Provided that player has not seen any action in a regular season game. That is said for a regular non-medical redshirt. SDW saw action in an exhibition game last year, but that does not count as minutes played.

i think he should as well. I also wish we could redshirt Edozie and Hogue to work on their shot but that's not going to happen (nor should it).

When do they decide to redshirt a player or not?

Agree. Many forget about Naz. He could be the real surprise player this season!

And what about Naz?

Why spend another scholarship year on an unknown CC SG when you look at who we are recruiting for 2014 and 2015. Bluford will not redshirt.

He would take a 2015 scholarship. We are looking at maybe 5 top 100 players at the moment. 2014 scholarships are irrelevant to Bluford red shirting.

Who says with a red shirt year he couldn't be more than a role player? Just because he wasn't a top 100 high school player doesn't mean he won't be good. Tyrus or Clyburn weren't highly recruited and they were our two best players last year IMO. Bluford averaged 18 ppg both years on horrible teams. Made over 200 3s in 2 years. His potential is there. A red shirt year would benefit a player like Bluford a lot.

Yeah, what a difference from the McD days when the cupboard looked bare beyond the third starter. We were playing walkons as starters.

You think Fred is going to set his sights lower for 2015 exeption.? Not going to make any speculation on PT this year, but bet FH wishes he had an extra scholly right now for a transfer or 2014 wing than rushing out a scholly to someone that might not see the floor. He will not tie up an extra scholly unless he looks totally different behind the scenes. We are out recruiting current players all the time. You do not redshirt when you out recruit current players. SDW will be the exception.

The title of this thread is cap city and there are games playing tonight so I keep thinking that's what the discussion is going to be about... Lame

I loved Tyrus but he wasn't within the top 4 best players all around.

You red-shirt players when there will be more available minutes in his second/third year compared to his first/second year. That is why Dorsey-Walker red-shirted, because he wasn't going to see as many minutes in his first year then he will in his fourth year. Not because he had the number #125 next to his name on his high school profile. We have 3 guards that can't red-shirt(Bubu, Kane, SDW), and 2 top 100 talented freshmen that aren't gonna red-shirt(Thomas, and Morris). And yes I know I left out Naz. All of this means there will be limited minutes for Bluford this year. So why not red-shirt him and get better and play him in 2 years when there is more available minutes where he isn't competing for minutes against RS/Sr guards? O right we shouldn't because he wasn't highly ranked out of high school and is only for sure gonna be a "role player". My bad what was I thinking.

Per minute he was. He was 1st in ppm, 3pmpm, spm, 2nd in least turnovers per minute, he played good defense, made a ton of hustle plays, and hit clutch shots. He was our second best player at worst.

His defense wasn't very good, unless fouling 3 point shooters qualify. I would have a hard time putting him above Ejim. 3rd best IMO, but he seemed like an airhead at time o defense and other times below average on defense.

If there won't be minutes in a major rebuilding year, where are the minutes going to come from in 2014 and 2015 when our top-100 players come in. You do not redshirt Jucos in basketball.

Yeah he did have a few flaws in his game. He made up for it though with his hustle plays, hitting tough shots, and hitting clutch shots.

I doubt very much that ANYONE will redshirt this year. In fact, I believe it will be pretty rare under Hoiberg. SDW was a very specific situation - experienced backcourt, he was really slender, Hoiberg sees potential.

We haven't signed a top 100 2014 or 2015 guy yet. When we do then we will talk. You red-shirt players that aren't physically ready that have potential to be a good player. Bluford is that type of player IMO. Just because you are a juco player doesn't mean you don't red-shirt. Oklahoma just red-shirted two juco posts this past season.

Bluford won't redshirt because of how deep we are at guard. If he isn't good enough to see the floor this year, he is out the door plain and simple. He would need the redshirt to transfer if necessary. Harsh but true, all the guards are young so his time would never come if it doesn't come next year IMO.

Who do we lose next year, just Kane and Bubu for guards? If he can't find PT against them this year, not going to going forward. If JUCOs don't play or contribute right away, get the scholarship off the books asap, like State43 said.
