Cap City League 6/28

I like SDW's competitive spirit. I don't love that he is a ball hog even considering it is the CCL. But he is young and will learn.

SDW and Thomas are the only ones that can create on their team. He really doesn't have choice whether he's on or not because he and Thomas are pretty much their teams only offense.

I know, but that other kid that kind of looks like Matt (#33 maybe?) was hitting it pretty good in the 2nd half and so was Matt. I just felt like the way SDW's shot was looking in the 2nd half, either he needed to drive or pass. Because the 3 wasn't there.

And every team in the CCL is basically dependent on the Iowa State guys and that doesn't keep just about every other player from passing at least occasionally.

I had heard that SDW was behind Naz and Bubu in March. And frankly I can see it. And I suspect that if SDW doesn't get the playing time that those that have bought into the CCL legend, it is going to cause a lot of people to get upset. SDW is going to be next years message board fight.

And I really like him....I just don't know that he is going to be more than a 12 minute guy next year. But he will only be a freshman.
We'll have to wait and see because I am very impressed with him and I think he can play good minutes this year. I was at the game where he scored 67 and he was doing everything you can possibly do in basketball. Tonight he struggled but every player has those games where nothing seems to go in. And the fact they redshirted him just shows how highly they think of him. So if his minutes this are below 15 minutes I still will think he will end up being a great player at Iowa State. He has the most upside out of anyone on the team in my opinion.

Oh and the other thing that is different this year than it has been the past few years.....the players really don't stick around for any other games. They all come in with girls (and they ALL have girls....) a little while before their games and then leave pretty much after them. All other things being equal, I would think that for team chemistry it would be better if they stuck around. But not a big deal at all, just a difference from the transfer era.

I was there on wed and palo, Gibson, hogue stayed.

You do realize these guys are playing without Fred coaching them? We've never had a ball hog problem under Fred. People take too much away from these games.

SDW had 7 assists so I wouldn't call him a ball hog. I would say he's doing what his very weak team needs him to do and that's try to score or pass to Matt.

As much anticipation as I have for these ccl updates, it's so easy to get carried away with one games results. On one hand it's great seeing that kind of emotion out of sdw in a "pick-up game", but it's also easy to think that he's pressing and letting his emotions get in the way which makes you wonder what's going to happen when the pressure is really on. I'm just using him as an example, and I'm sure the same could be said for a lot of the guys. Either way I'm excited to see them all in cyclone uniforms and can't wait for the season to start. Keep the updates coming, so I can concern myself with things that I have no control over and/or don't really exist.

Here is the question that needs answered, and answered straight:

I could give a rat's *** who else is on their them. I just want to know...straight as an arrow, no BS...do SDW and MT play well...TOGETHER?

Percy had 13 points. Great, this should feed another ***** fest about him not hustling in a pick up game.

Too be fair, we don't know that he didn't hustle. There is also the chance that he just is unable to score against inferior opponents.

Oh, I know. I'm just lamenting the constant bombardment he's taken over a meaningless exhibition league this summer. That number is only going to feed the flames.

Yeah, I think we should be fair about why we bag on players and throw in a little variation once in a while

I would say no. In fact, at one point they were arguing pretty intensly during the first half. Just kidding, yeah they play well together. They are always looking for each other on outlet passes and fast breaks. It's fun to watch them play together.

You had me going there at the beginning...for real.

Playing hard in practice and in pickup games definitely transfers over to the actual season with some. Percy definitely plays during the season similar to his 'meaningless' exhibition games in the summer. good at times, listless at others

Michael Jordan was phenomenal because he was one of the most intense, balls-to-the-wall, legendary 'practice' players in NBA history------and it seemed to transfer over to regular season games

I play pickup games at lunchtime. Everyone plays hard and wants to win, even though it's 'meaningless' to everyone else

Competitive nature. Guys like Jordan want to destroy opponents, even if the competition is a game of Scrabble.

Just a hunch, but I think the staff this year will pretty much either "make" or "break" Percy. Need valuable production of some kind from him regardless what his role/minutes will be. Play hard, work on your game, DEFEND, be receptive to change, etc. Of course it will ultimately come down to him as to which outcome is most likely. Its not like fans aren't rooting for him and want this to happen positively for him, even though he's the most discussed player.
