Ames called worst BIG XII town

Hard to see that "ranking" considering Ames is usually in the running for the top rankings for places to raise a family, has a low crime rate and has a good school system.

He must be basing the rankings on some mythical formula because there is no way that Ames isn't in the top 5 towns in the Big XII.

While it might not compare to some places in terms of being pure sports towns, it is far and away the best family oriented town and most well balanced town of any Big XII school.

Agreed!

For those interested you should ask the proprietor of Olde Main just how difficult it was to get that place open. It is a minor miracle that they were able to open after the fight that the City of Ames put up. That is one of the few bright spots in Ames. I would venture to say that that place has single-handedly revitalized Main Street of Ames. We finally have some local color and they are now selling it regionally.

I have lived in Boulder and Iowa City. These communities are light years ahead of Ames. Boulder has The Hill and the Pearl Street Mall. Iowa City has the Ped Mall. The Iowa State campus has character it's beautiful and I am going to leave it squarely out of this rant. Ames however is non-descript. It's common. There's nothing to differentiate it from Boone or Oskaloosa or any other moderately sized Iowa town. There is no defining place that characterizes this home of a major University. I agree that turning Welch in to a pestrian only district would work wonders. I also think that they should bring the Dinky back to bridge the two entertainment district with something distinctive.

The question I have is where is THE great local place to watch a game? Where is our Sports Column? Where is our Kams? Where is our Eskimo Joes? Where is the tavern/restaurant that is the unequivocal home of the Cyclones? And why isn't the marching band playing "roll out the barrel" in campustown on friday nights before home football games?

Broodwich - maybe you should attend the next Ames City Council meeting and read your post - word-for-word - during the public feedback part of the meeting. Great summary.
Only thing I would add is that Campustown desperately needs a large parking ramp. IC has several...

You are correct that anything anyone tries to get built in Ames is met with major hurdles. Someone said in an earlier post about all the places rumored to hit Ames. Well, they're still rumors because there are still people on the City Council that won't vote for anything (unless it is a no vote).

It took year and a half of constant pushing to get a Fareway, Clinic, and Gas Station into North Ames--and most residents wanted that!

Sorry to de-rail the post, but Ames is missing out on opportunities. And, no matter how you slice it, we are bottom 3 as far as being a "college town".

I will say that I love living in the Ames area, and I love doing so because it is great raising kids here. I would love to see Ames become even better.

And because the City chooses to make it near impossible to develop here, and give developers new and constant hoops to jump through, developers, retailers, etc. tend to stay away!

The same city council that passed the law that only 3 non-relatives could occupy a house....in A COLLEGE TOWN!!!

a Buffalo Wild Wings?.

Excuse me? Did you just say B-Dubs? Could you elaborate on this. I consider myself fairly "well connected" and have yet to hear about anything about this comign to Ames. Still say Hot N' Zesty at West Cyde is the best wing I have had but I would love to be able to play NTN with some Blazin's and beers.

Ames does not suck. I lived in College Station for a year and I am back in Ames. College Station was not a very friendly town at all if you were not southern baptist or went to aTm you were considered a nobody and southern hospitality PLEASE!! whatever. I do wish the town would be more into its University though, but other than that my wife and I like the balance here.

WAIT A MINUTE... Ames is a great town. I usually like Forde, but I disagree whole heartedly. Not only did he not chose Waco, Manhatten, or Boulder for the worst town, but he actually took Boulder for the BEST town... he must have been REALLY DRUNK or in his best hippie mode while in Boulder... That town sucks. And with the exception of when Texas Tech is good, Lubbock REALLY sucks too. Poor point in a usually good column

How can you HONESTLY say that Boulder "sucks"?????

BOULDER IS GARBAGE!! A bunch of trust-fund toting, fresca drinking, granola eating, greeny do-gooding, wannabe hippies who are so backwards and rude it's ridiculous. I've been there for an ISU game and had a bottle thrown at us from 40 feet away. Most normal, tax paying people in Colorado hate Boulder too because it gives the rest of the sane, nice people in Colorado a bad name. If you like it, good for you, but you can have your "rich, too good for anyone, but peace on earth and don't kill that fly hippies".

I agree with this sentiment. I lived in Boulder. I was there this past weekend. I don't like Boulder and would not choose to live there. There is a lot NOT to like about Boulder, but it's mostly because of the people.

But..

However it has a lot more to offer than Ames does.

Ames doesn't have a Sun Microsystem branch. Ames doesn't have a Google Office. Ames doesn't have an IBM office. Ames doesn't have a definitive cultural district like the Pearl Street Mall. Ames isn't a bicycle friendly community. Ames retail doesn't "lick the proverbial sack" of that in Boulder. Everyone loves Old Chicago. Well I've been going there since the early 1980s at the original in Boulder.

I hate Boulder. But in no way, shape or form does it suck.

Imo, the biggest thing that hurts Ames is that it's "dowtown" and its "campustown" are not one and the same, like Iowa City. While I dislike many things about Iowa City, from the campus, to the people who go to school there from Chicago, to the general aesthetics of the downtown area, I think from an organizational standpoint, it makes sense to have one, larger, hopping area in a college town, as opposed to a pretty fun "campustown" that is relatively small, and a downtown 3 miles away, which is for the most part, unfriendly or inconvenient to the majority of the student population. Of course this is all because Ames was platted 2 miles away from Campus, to be a service town, Campustown developed separately to more closely serve the university...

ames is deffiantly better then manhattan or waco by far maybe even lubbock, lubbock is pretty out in the middle of no where...

If they were to close off campustown to cars they would HAVE to build a parking garage...

No they wouldn't. I'm talking ONE BLOCK, from Lincoln Way to the clock tower. The only thing that would be removed is the parallel parking along the street. And if that was done, they could widen the sidewalks (making the street service only) and have more of a sidewalk cafe feel...outdoor service for some of the bars and restaurants.

Beg your pardon, but the Ames school district is a good one.
Ames is growing rapidly in the west as well as the north. The reason it continues to grow to the north is that big-money homes have always been there, near the white-stocking country club. You'll even find Wayne Morgan living in the north section .. in his million-buck-plus home, by the way. Ames is a great town with a great future. And I repeatedly hear comments from visiting football fans around the Big Twelve who love the gameday atmosphere in Ames.
