Ames called worst BIG XII town

Well if Ames keeps importing criminals from urban areas then we might make the top tier of best towns. LOL

We wouldn't want Ames to be representative of the Midwest and Iowa would we? The problem is . . we have too many people outside of Iowa trying to tell us what our college culture should be like . . and too many of us believing that nonsense. LEAVE AMES ALONE.

I've been to every big 12 city, there is no way we rank below, Manhatten, Waco, Lincoln or Lubbuck. Those four towns are terrible. I would say we are close if not better then Columbus, Lawrence, Norman, Stillwater, College Station. I would probably take Austin or Boulder as the top two.

I personally think Ames could do alot better job showcasing Iowa State.

I will get flamed for this, but they need to take a few lessons from Iowa City. Every bar down their showcases Iowa and the Big 10; Ames does not even compare.

You know its bad when you go to a bar to watch an Iowa State football or basketball game, and instead of playing the audio of the game over the loud speakers, they are playing music.

I'll question the every. But would Ames be a total different city if the bars were 19+ yes. Alot more 18-24 year old would live in Ames... thus more bars and probably a couple more sports oriented bars, no I dont have any facts to back it but its true.

I think he is basing this on Sports atmosphere. It is hard to say.

Personally, I think he is basing it on ignorance. What is this guy's e-mail addy? We should all drop him a note to ask.

Or Jamie should invite him for the tailgate Saturday.

Yeah b/c Ames is always bumping with windchills in the teens:no:

I agree 1000%. I think it's the mindset of Iowa State fans. Iowa State fans wonder whether they should were Iowa State gear into a game when ISU isn't playing. Every other fan in the country would go ahead and where their team clothing.

It seems Iowa State has some great hard-core fans. There just hasn't been enough wins or products out there to gather the bandwagon fans.

It bugs me when posters rag on the majority of iowa fans that didn't go to that university. You know what...I didn't go to Iowa State and I'll put my allegiance up against anyone's. ISU needs more...many, many more fans that will wear cardinal and gold, even if they went (or didn't go) somewhere else.

I have a hard time believing the current quality of our football and men’s basketball teams didn’t play a role in his ranking. Isn’t it bad enough that we are in last place in football and predicted to finish in 11th place in basketball? Do we have to pile on to the town itself (which personally out of every town in the entire United States of America I have visited is my absolute favorite)? Please kill this thread!!!

We typically hit up Olde Main every Wednesday night, and last year during basketball road games, not once would they have the audio from the game playing over the speakers. The TV's would be tuned to the game, but music would be playing in the background. I was told they did the same thing for the UNLV and Baylor football games this year as well.

I'm close to writing Pat Forde an email. If he's ever attended an ISU tailgate, he would think otherwise. After going to Manhattan and Waco, I can not understand how anyone would rank those towns ahead of Ames, unless they have some hatred for ISU or the state of Iowa, and I've never thought Forde had either...

Having managed a restaurant or two over the years, here's what you do (it's not really difficult. Seriously).

1. Ask your waitperson to have the manager come to your table.

2. Ask the manager (firmly) to put the game on, and if he/she cannot comply , ask why not?

Not complicated, is it?

First off, even if the manager simply refuses, you will encourage your fellow customers to make the same request. So don't whisper.

In some cases, in this day and age of canned "ambience", either there is no OTA radio at all, or there is no link from the TV's to the overhead speakers. Either of those can be remedied by management or ownership, given persistent customer interest.

Or tell the manager you'll take your patronage elswhere.

Oddly enough, restaurants like to make money. They do what the customers want.

Agreed. I went to ISU but would never live there again unless I could be college aged again.

Well, I'll disagree. There's plenty to do in Ames and it is a great town. There are a lot of good places in Ames to eat and drink that I had no idea were there while I was a student. I think that the town has made major steps forward in the last few years. And it's getting better every year.

In the Big XII, I'd easily rate it over Waco and Manhatten. Lincoln? That's not a college town. The only time that place is a real college town is on FB gameday. Lubbock? Please, that place is in the middle of freaking nowhere. The only places that Ames wouldn't give a run to for college towns is Austin, Boulder and Lawrence.

You're going to the wrong place then. Welch Ave Station has audio. Plenty of the smaller bars on Main St have audio. Pretty sure Wallabys has audio.
