Shut up Forde. You piece.
Worst town = Manhattan, KS
Waco is worse than Manhattan, imo. Manhattan is just kind of hick. Waco is straight up dirty...

Hard to see that "ranking" considering Ames is usually in the running for the top rankings for places to raise a family, has a low crime rate and has a good school system.
He must be basing the rankings on some mythical formula because there is no way that Ames isn't in the top 5 towns in the Big XII.
While it might not compare to some places in terms of being pure sports towns, it is far and away the best family oriented town and most well balanced town of any Big XII school.
For those interested you should ask the proprietor of Olde Main just how difficult it was to get that place open. It is a minor miracle that they were able to open after the fight that the City of Ames put up. That is one of the few bright spots in Ames. I would venture to say that that place has single-handedly revitalized Main Street of Ames. We finally have some local color and they are now selling it regionally.
I have lived in Boulder and Iowa City. These communities are light years ahead of Ames. Boulder has The Hill and the Pearl Street Mall. Iowa City has the Ped Mall. The Iowa State campus has character it's beautiful and I am going to leave it squarely out of this rant. Ames however is non-descript. It's common. There's nothing to differentiate it from Boone or Oskaloosa or any other moderately sized Iowa town. There is no defining place that characterizes this home of a major University. I agree that turning Welch in to a pestrian only district would work wonders. I also think that they should bring the Dinky back to bridge the two entertainment district with something distinctive.
The question I have is where is THE great local place to watch a game? Where is our Sports Column? Where is our Kams? Where is our Eskimo Joes? Where is the tavern/restaurant that is the unequivocal home of the Cyclones? And why isn't the marching band playing "roll out the barrel" in campustown on friday nights before home football games?
Only thing I would add is that Campustown desperately needs a large parking ramp. IC has several...

You are correct that anything anyone tries to get built in Ames is met with major hurdles. Someone said in an earlier post about all the places rumored to hit Ames. Well, they're still rumors because there are still people on the City Council that won't vote for anything (unless it is a no vote).
It took year and a half of constant pushing to get a Fareway, Clinic, and Gas Station into North Ames--and most residents wanted that!
Sorry to de-rail the post, but Ames is missing out on opportunities. And, no matter how you slice it, we are bottom 3 as far as being a "college town".
I will say that I love living in the Ames area, and I love doing so because it is great raising kids here. I would love to see Ames become even better.

The same city council that passed the law that only 3 non-relatives could occupy a house....in A COLLEGE TOWN!!!![]()
a Buffalo Wild Wings?.
WAIT A MINUTE... Ames is a great town. I usually like Forde, but I disagree whole heartedly. Not only did he not chose Waco, Manhatten, or Boulder for the worst town, but he actually took Boulder for the BEST town... he must have been REALLY DRUNK or in his best hippie mode while in Boulder... That town sucks. And with the exception of when Texas Tech is good, Lubbock REALLY sucks too. Poor point in a usually good column
How can you HONESTLY say that Boulder "sucks"?????
BOULDER IS GARBAGE!! A bunch of trust-fund toting, fresca drinking, granola eating, greeny do-gooding, wannabe hippies who are so backwards and rude it's ridiculous. I've been there for an ISU game and had a bottle thrown at us from 40 feet away. Most normal, tax paying people in Colorado hate Boulder too because it gives the rest of the sane, nice people in Colorado a bad name. If you like it, good for you, but you can have your "rich, too good for anyone, but peace on earth and don't kill that fly hippies".
If they were to close off campustown to cars they would HAVE to build a parking garage...
I don't think it is the worst Big 12 town, but Ames does suck...
