Ames called worst BIG XII town

Ames crime rate has sky rocketed in the past 2 years, and the Ames School system is less than stealler. There is a reason this town is growiing north, and it has a lot to do with people wanting to be in the Gilbert School District, which is all north of Bloomington Road.

Also, its an article about football, not on raising a family. Ames is probably in the bottom 3 on being attractive to recuits, if you look at the town itself, IMO.

You have to put those complaints into context...

Ames High is actually much better statistically than most schools nationally. Everybody loves to say their school system sucks because they're around it and hear all the stories but in this case the grass isn't greener outside the state, let alone in Texas. Ames is a perfectly good school system that would stack up favorably to most in the BigXII and you can't just twist it otherwise because you're familiar with it and not the others.

Similarly, crime is on the rise in most places over the past two years and Ames is still very low statistically. Again, you can't twist it just because you hear about it and watch the local news.

What I'm saying is that people will always feel they can do better elsewhere and there are times where that is true (i.e. Gilbert's school system) but you have to remember that the comparison is to two local schools and you have to extrapolate that nationally, or at least as far South as Texas in this case, to look at the entire picture.

I guess maybe Forde was looking at places where he could score a quickie on his way to the motel or something because that is the only way I'd see Ames rating below numerous places on that list.

I love the start to this article:

"The Dash wishes to send a fruit basket and a set of steak knives to Kirk Ferentz and Iowa (2). Thank you, Hawkeyes, for saving college football from a third straight season of sending an overmatched, overrated and outdated Big Ten champion to the BCS National Championship game. Now that Iowa has taken overly conservative Penn State (3) out of the title mix and Ohio State has removed itself with two losses in a season of great expectation, hopes are high for a worthy title game.

And the Big Ten is free to send its champion to Pasadena, where it figures to be throttled by USC (4). But the parade will be fabulous."

CLASSIC!!

I also think he nails the comparison on the strengths of the Big 12 and SEC this year. The SEC is deeper (the bottom teams are better in the SEC than the Big 12) but the Big 12 is overall the superior league (the top teams are better in the Big 12 and there are more quality Big 12 teams than SEC teams).

He nails "Stark-vegas" as the worst locale in the SEC. I am curious why he would rate Ames below Manhattan, Waco, or possibly even College Station...likely the quality of play on the field or the poor late season weather may be his rationale.

Hard to see that "ranking" considering Ames is usually in the running for the top rankings for places to raise a family, has a low crime rate and has a good school system.

He must be basing the rankings on some mythical formula because there is no way that Ames isn't in the top 5 towns in the Big XII.

While it might not compare to some places in terms of being pure sports towns, it is far and away the best family oriented town and most well balanced town of any Big XII school.

Why does a student care whether the town is family oriented? Ames is boring for students. Family is usually the last thing on a student's mind while going through college. At least it was for me.

We moved back to Iowa for two reasons. To get our daughter closer to grandparents and other family and the Iowa Schools. Colorado schools are bad. Everyone should really appreciate how good of an education you can get for free in Iowa (and much of the upper midwest).

I think he is basing this on Sports atmosphere. It is hard to say. It is just one guys opinion.

I certainly had plenty of living Ames while in School.

I personally think Ames could do alot better job showcasing Iowa State.

I will get flamed for this, but they need to take a few lessons from Iowa City. Every bar down their showcases Iowa and the Big 10; Ames does not even compare.

You know its bad when you go to a bar to watch an Iowa State football or basketball game, and instead of playing the audio of the game over the loud speakers, they are playing music.

outside of the state.......... Iowa is statistically one of the better places for public schools. but what is ames inside the state

That's the thing, nowhere did it state that it was being looked at from a recruit's mindset, or a student. And I would beg to differ that "students don't care whether a town is family friend". Some do, not all, but not all students drink wildly and get DUIs every other weekend like in Iowa City. Some kids go to college to learn and pay their own way to do so.

Very good point, but that is just Iowa in general!

I'm very fond of my time in Ames and think it reflects the state of Iowa well... quiet, family friendly, etc... however, from my experiences in other college towns, Ames lacks a certain "atmosphere" or "feel" like a Madison, Boulder, or Austin. Granted, size has a lot to do with it and perhaps it should be compared to towns of similar size. Ames is a great place for an education, but people split town once they get a degree, other college towns are "destination" towns that a lot of people move to (like Raleigh-Durham for example) just because of the progressive vibe of a town, and the combination of the arts, music, sports, and culture of a town or area. There is an inverse relationship between the appeal of the town to 18-20 yr olds and the "family friendliness" level of the town. I don't think Jerome Tiller walked around Ames and campus during recruiting visits thinking "man, what a great town to settle down and raise a kid in!"

Sorry guys, I have a lot of sentimental reasons to like Ames but it is Ft. Dodge with a University instead of a prison. I have been to most of the Big 12 North towns, and Ames is wrestling with Manhattan, KS as the worst.

You can thank the "Keep Ames Boring" crowd for that. Bad retail, poor job market and no cultural district. When was the last time a major concert came through here?

The part that hurts the most is that Ames has limitless potential to be a great University town.

I've been to a lot of other towns... in terms of Game Day, you can't be Ames in terms of parking, location relative to the interstate, ease of finding it, etc.

Tailgating rocks. Only thing that isn't there is bars relatively close to the Jack (which doesn't have much appeal to me anyways but... I know some like it)

I suspect the ranking system is based on the experience for an out-of-town sportsreporter:

  1. Quality of airport / length of drive from airport
  2. Quality of hotel
  3. Restaurant for evening meal / place to grab an adult beverage
  4. Campus "scenery" of the female variety

After further review, the ruling on the article has been changed: Worst Town is Waco, TX. Has anyone heard of the Branch Davidians?

I would agree with Boulder as the Best Town. It's tough to beat the mountains.

Honestly, I would put Ames well ahead of Columbia, MO as well. That place is a hole.

My ranking, having been to all of them...

Austin
Boulder
Lawrence
Columbia
Lincoln
Norman
College Station
Stillwater
Lubbock
Ames
Manhatten
Waco

Haven't been to Oxford or Baton Rouge but most of the other SEC towns, besides Starkville, would fit between Austin and Boulder.
