12/15/2008-Official Head Coaching Search Thread

if chuck martin cold have atleast half the success hes had at gvs id be all for him no doubt .... but i'm hoping for someone with D1 experience .... sure turner gill but doubt he wants the job .... what about todd graham at tulsa? .... lastly charlie strong my angle with him is that if we have a D at all more than we did last season we win atleast 3 more games .... our O isn't our problem (id say thats where most of our talent is) it was our inability to make stops and refuse scoring ...

I'm curious, do you think there is a better pool of candidates this time around than there was two years ago?

Hmmm, great question.

But I think the answers would be blinded by hindsight.

Generally, I have no idea. But it does seem there are a few more this time with HC experience. But what defines a candidate? The people we think deserve the job? The media's thoughts?

Jamie very well could have a much different list of guys than what many expect.

Comparing it to our last hiring process, I think there is a larger pool of candidates to choose from, which I attribute to the mass firing of coaches as of late.

2 years ago, all the college football hiring hype was generated from young assistants. Now, it is transitioning to older, experienced coaches.

Firing coaches seems to be contagious these days, even for sub-par programs. It does tend to generate excitement for a dead program which accompanies growing ticket sales... except if your coach leaves for another school.

What do you mean by that?

I meant that it is a tad interesting that Bobby Douglas and Wayne Morgan were both out as head coaches within a year of Pollard taking over as AD. Also, Douglas was no longer an assistant AD within 18 months. Go ahead and start firing away at me

wut

Jamie just wants to win....even if the canidate was purple.

I like the pool of head coaches, especially since we are one of the few fishing right now. I'm getting excited about the search, but even more so about the assistants that may be brought in by the new coach. I think Gene really screwed the pooch with the budget he was given for that.

I would like to see someone come in with Div-1 head coaching experience. Doesn't need to be BCS experience, but simply someone who has had to deal with the planning, organizing, and execution of a college football team at a top level. To me, nothing beats experience.

That being said, people like Gill, Patterson, Tuberville, etc. would fit the bill. I don't have any particular favorites, but would like to see Pollard go that route this time.

I think Loney or Paul Rhodes would be not sexy but solid hires. This is Loney's dream job, he's an ISU man. Rhodes is an intelligent, demanding player's coach. He was runner-up to the Pitt job before they agreed with Wannstedt. He's an Ankeny guy so he knows the landscape. We need a coach that is not looking to go anywhere and call Ames...HOME

Are you serious? Morgan was a bad coach that needed to find employment elsewhere. I loved Douglas, and while I think he may have been the best 'technique' coach in the NCAA, under him we had a nasty habit of peaking too early in the season and wrestling flat in the Big XII and NCAA tourneys. Also, having the name Cael Sanderson as your head coach is much better for recruiting than the name Bobby Douglas.

Also, I think Pollard may have realized what happened the last time we let
'the greatest wrestler of all time' slip away from us...

So I'm not sure how race fits into any of this...

I just thought it was interesting that the coaches were both let go. BTW Douglas built ASU and ISU's programs over the past 30 years. Also, Morgan's W/L record speaks for itself compared to McDermott's. If he is a terrible coach then what does that make McDermott???

Pollard has to recognize the trend. Hiring coaches that focus on defense (Chizik and McDermott) isn't the trend in their sports. Notice how ISU can't put enough points on the board to win games in either sport

I think it's completely unfair to accuse Pollard of racism, unless you have evidence beyond the Morgan and Douglas firings.
