12/15/2008-Official Head Coaching Search Thread

What concerns me the most about this coach hiring process, is that we may not be able to announce the hire until after Bowl season. If that was the case, players could start to leave before the announcement (although I hope not).

FYI, Buffalo plays in the International Bowl on Jan 3rd.

Then when he dies we can all ***** about how he quit on our team!
we get the point you are happy for Chizik.

most of us find the means and manner in which he treated the program, and our kids ******.

you are never going to convince me, that he is honorable-and i certainly am not compelled to post that i think you an idiot for supporting him every time you post.

p.s. death is something that he wouldn't control...he controlled the lies he made to the program, players, and administration while negotiating at auburn.

Once again, I've never said I liked what's happened here. But I moved on about 5 minutes after I heard the news, he didn't want to be here so he left, that pretty much ends the story. I don't really have a reason to speak about him anymore, good or bad, I'm more interested in who's next.

Anyone got Gill's cell phone number? I need to send him a text...

"U will b my bffg if u come to isu! :-) xoxo "

BTW, bffg = best friend forever Gill.

PS. BTW = by the way.

PPS. PS = oh, screw it.

Oh screw it =

Who was the #1 Choice when GC was hired? I thought I read yesterday that GC was #2.

Rumors are Brian Kelly was #1, was offered but wanted to wait longer than Pollard was willing in order to give him an answer. Pollard went to #2.

I do not know if there is any truth to that.

I do know, there were a number of fans/CF members that would not have been happy with Kelly and would've taken Gene over Kelly in a heartbeat.

I think looking back on the hire is pointless - as most everyone was very, very happy with that decision. Even Pollard said he'd do the same thing again.

In hindsight, Kelly may have been the better guy - but who knows - perhaps he would not have been able to win here.

Kevin Sumlin at Houston

1) He knows both sides of the football plus special teams. He has served in every capacity on both sides of the ball and has been successful. Everywhere he goes, his teams win

2) Would be a great minority hire for the Big 12 and ISU. However, I question Pollard in this area.

3) He can recruit. Has recruiting ties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana which are hot beds for talent

4) He has a great staff at Houston including Skladany (don't care what you say, I liked him at ISU)

5) We could up his salary from 600 k to over 1 million.

What do you mean by that?

So true, probably the most important factor in how Gene is screwing ISU....

In essence, whoever we hire will be tasked with assembling a staff and compiling a recruiting class - make calls, get recruits in and get commitments in the next two months. This is a repeat of what happened with Chiziks first class and that was thrown together - this class was developing into what could have been the best ISU recruiting class any of us had ever seen (on paper).

Also, players will be making decisions on what they intend to do and some will transfer before the new head coach is hired and also before the spring semester starts.

I know that GC did was best for him and his family and thats a great enough excuse in front of the cameras. But, for what he has done to this university and those kids, i cannot ever forgive him. I will root against his success and can only wish that in three years we can look back and laugh at how our current staff has won more then auburns!!!!!

How ironic would that be for ISU and Auburn meet in a bowl say in 2010 when our current kids are juniors and seniors and they took it to him.

I really like it.

Another idea. The guy who was hire at Bama, got fired be for starting. Can't recall his name. I think he would stay clean if given a second chance.

I don't think the Ames/Des Moines area has any strip clubs the caliber of what he will need to be interested in the position.

Everybody needs to stop drinking the Turner Gill Kool-Aid. One 8-5 season does not quantify as turning a program around. The MAC Championship game was handed to him on a silver platter by Ball State with their many miscues. Turning around a program consists of multiple winning seasons, not flash in the pan 8-5 campaigns. Danny Mac had a 9-3 campaign here, but I would not say he turned our program around.

Here's the problem with Gill or any young and inexperienced head coach or assistant we might hire: They get here with the mindset of turning around a program. Then we have a couple of bad years and they start to think how this job will adversely affect their chances of ever landing a top position at another school, which leads to them bailing on us like Chizik did. There's no way that Gill would look at the ISU job as a long term gig.

I'm for getting an older more established coach who has head coaching experience and has had long term success somewhere. Someone like that will be more willing to weather the storm here for the next couple of years, and wouldn't be as likely to jump ship for perceived greener pastures.

I like Patterson at TCU, Pat Hill at Fresno St, Steve Loney, Mike Price at UTEP to name a few. Mike Price worked a minor miracle at Wazzou and what he's done at UTEP is more impressive than what Gill has done at Buffalo.

Pat Hill at Fresno St has built a consistent winner (9 bowl games in his 12 seasons plus the best record against BCS teams for a non-BCS school.)

Gary Patterson would be my top choice. I just don't know if he really wants to leave TCU for a lateral type move. I mean, he turned down a $2 million per offer to coach at Minny, so he seems pretty content.

This is a major rebuilding job that we're looking at here at ISU, and I think to trust a young inexperienced coach with that task is incredibly risky on a lot of fronts. As a program we can't afford another two year and bolt type of deal.

His name's Mike Price and he's a hell of a coach. Look at what he's done during his coaching tenure. Plus that incident at 'Bama was blown completely out of proportion.

Reasons why to drink the Turner Gill Kool-aid. Before he was the coach at Buffalo, they won 10 games in 7 years. Once he became coach, it took him 2 years to match that.

Three of UB’s eight All-MAC players came from Gill’s first two recruiting classes.

He has always been a winner, as a player and coach.

The only name a college coaching website has thrown out is Jay Norvell, and that's just because they claim he was very close to getting the job when Chizik was hired

patton -offensive line coach at oklahoma-have him steal cale gundy from oklahoma to be his offensive coordinator-patton knows how to coach offensive lines and is a great recruiter.

bailiff- coach at rice-was 9-3 this year and is one helluva a recruiter

sumlin at houston-went 7-5 this year.

both sumlin and bailiff know how to recruit texas-something chizik did not learn at texas when he had his training wheels on under mack brown.doubt he ever learned anything from mack brown because he had an oversized head and ego.
