Open letter thread for appreciating Otz

The Nick Nurse news reminded me that it’s great to not have to spend the first 3 months of every offseason speculating on where your program leader is going to be next season.

It’s much more fun to focus on how your coach is signing the highest recruiting classes in school history, while landing its top choices of transfers.

Friday OT - Playing Hooky

Rulzzz here pinch hitting for our Friday OT MVP @Angie. This week's topic was one I pitched to her but she suggested saving it for me to do.

The beautiful weather we had in Iowa last week was giving me "I want to play hooky vibes" ala Ferris Bueller.

So topic is what things would you do if you played hooky for a day from school or for most of us work?

Cyclones add post transfer Isnelle Natabou

Big get for this team. No. 4 in the NCAA in field goal percentage last year. Two years left.

Breece vs Bijan

I’m certain articles like this were written about Breece last year but it still generates a question for me. I’m the type of guy that digs in deep on ISU and I’m familiar but not super clued into the rest of the Big12 but I am fairly uninformed when it comes to the rest of college football. Why is it the conversation last year was can Breece sneak into the very end of the first round vs this year I’m seeing a decent amount of mock drafts with Bijan as high as the top ten.

I’m sure team needs and draft positions is a large factor but is Bijan really viewed as that much better of an NFL prospect? The two guys almost had identical final seasons as far as production but Breece essentially did it twice. Then Breece did slightly better in the combine.

I hate to say it but is it as simple as he’s got the longhorn logo next to his name.

REALISTIC expectations for 2023 football season

As we head into the spring game, I'm trying to decide what my realistic expectations are for the 2023 season. Below is the schedule.

Given that...

  1. we have 5 conference road games and just 4 conference home games
  2. we don't get to play against Texas Tech, West Virginia, Houston, and Central Florida
  3. we're coming off a 1-8 conference record last year
... I'm already starting to temper my expectations.

The good news is that I think Matt Campbell teams tend to perform the best when expectations are not real high.

Realistically, I'm hoping we can find at least 6 wins and get to a bowl game. Ideally, though, I'm hoping we can shock the Big 12 and the nation.

What is your realistic expectation?

  • Sept. 2 – UNI
  • Sept. 9 – Iowa
  • Sept. 16 – at Ohio
  • Sept. 23 – Oklahoma State
  • Sept. 30 – at Oklahoma
  • Oct. 7 – TCU (Jack Trice Legacy Game)
  • Oct. 14 – at Cincinnati
  • Oct. 28 – at Baylor
  • Nov. 4 – Kansas (Homecoming)
  • Nov. 11 – at BYU
  • Nov. 18 – Texas
  • Nov. 25 – at Kansas State

Don't go around tonight...

A 600-pound defunct satellite is expected to crash into the Earth on Wednesday (April 19). NASA said the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) spacecraft is expected to reenter the atmosphere around 9:40 p.m. ET, with an uncertainty of plus or minus three hours.

While a majority of the decommissioned satellite should burn up in the atmosphere, NASA warned that some pieces may survive reentry and crash into the surface. However, the chances of the debris harming anybody are approximately 1 in 2,467, the space agency predicted.

NASA does not know where the debris will fall and said the Department of Defense is constantly monitoring the satellite as it falls out of orbit.

RHESSI was launched in 2002 to study solar flares and coronal mass ejections. It was decommissioned in 2018 and has been in a slowly decaying orbit ever since.

"During its mission tenure, RHESSI recorded more than 100,000 X-ray events, allowing scientists to study the energetic particles in solar flares. The imager helped researchers determine the particles' frequency, location, and movement, which helped them understand where the particles were being accelerated," NASA said.

On That Note: Elementary, my dear Watson

Welcome to this week's edition of On That Note. Your hosts for OTN are @cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz, and me.

Today we're looking for songs with titles or lyrics containing one or more of the elements from the Periodic Table of Elements.

The periodic table of elements is found easily on the internet, but in addition - here they are in list form if that's easier: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_chemical_elements

Exceptions: We are NOT accepting gold or silver. Those were included in two previous OTN topics, so they’re off-limits this time. Repeat, DO NOT POST SONGS WITH ONLY GOLD OR SILVER AS THE ELEMENTS! Of course, gold or silver is OK if the song also contains other qualifying elements.

(We are allowing 'chrome' as a short version of 'chromium.')

Last week's OTN was: Faith It can be found here https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/on-that-note-faith.278336/

Guaranteed. Lea Nelson will be your new favorite ISU athlete.

Seriously, you should listen to this podcast before any others this week on CF or Iowa Everywhere. It is amazing.

Steph & Alisa interview Lea Nelson of the Iowa State softball team. There aren't 10 seconds in a row of this podcast that aren't compelling. I guarantee that Lea will become one of your favorite Iowa State athletes after listening to this podcast. It starts with discussion about the unique relationship that is forming between the Iowa State softball team and the West Virginia baseball team. She gives great insight into the life of a softball player, including glimpses into dugout personalities and relationships with coaches.

If Steph & Alisa gave birth to a podcast child, it would be Lea!

Alright people, time to chime in on an online debate.

So to summarize, forgettable MLB pitcher takes to Twitter to slam United for making his 5 month pregnant wife pick up some popcorn his kids spilled during the flight. Said pregnant wife's marginally famous sister-in-law also chimed in. It's led to a decent debate on social media about picking up after your kids.

I'm always mortified by the mess my kids leave when are in public. I make them pick it up to the extent we are able without a broom, vacuum, etc. and will always leave a bigger than usual tip if I know they have extra to clean up. But I've seen quite a bit on social media about United being paid to clean the plane. Where do you land?
