On Matt P and Rob Howe
I have a question for you guys.......when you were in high school, did you have a good idea who most of the druggies were? I did. I knew, for the most part, who was doing drugs and who was doing a lot of drinking. I didn't do any of those things, but I knew who was.
A football team is like a small high school graduating class of 100. These guys know who is doing what even if thy aren't friends and don't hang out together.
Rob Howe said himself last week that teams are cliquey. One would assume that one of Iowa's cliques is the 'God fearing and hippie hating' one and one would the 'druggie' one and there would obviously be a lot more. So I'm guessing it was pretty obvious who was doing crap and who wasn't. This idea that we can't be sure that anyone knew that DJK liked his coke and pot is SO DAMN stupid. I bet 90% of that team knew that DJK was into drugs. Maybe not to the point that we now think he was, but they knew. That doesn't mean that they hung out with him or that they did things with him, but they knew what he was doing in his free time.
And then we get into the question that if a player knows, what should they do about it. I think that a team leader/captain has certain obligations to the team and maybe should give someone a heads up. I would hope that a coach would have that type of conversation with the captains on the team before the season.
I also think that every coach has an idea who their potential trouble makers are. And those guys should be kept on a shorter leash. For example, if I was KF and I didn't trust DJK not to run his mouth with the media, I might be curious who he is living with. I would suspect that Rhoads has an idea who on his team might have some issues.
