NDSU favored by 2

Iowa State will not beat Iowa this year... Better stay focused on maintaining the season with more than half the fans interested if their is a loss to NDSU.

That is the same thing I heard in 2005.

That is the same thing I heard in 2005.

In 2005 Iowa was replacing three starters from the 2004 DL, two of them were undersized RSFR DT's. They were also replacing three starters from the prior year's OL. That game was also in Jack Trice.

2014 doesn't remotely resemble the circumstances that led to the 2005 game. ISU's front 7 dominated Iowa's OL that day....that won't happen this year.

Upsets happen, sure, but when you're out manned on both sides of the LOS, its a major uphill battle, especially on the road.

We'll know a lot more after week 1....both Iowa & ISU have tough FCS opponents. I think Iowa will wear theirs down in the trenches, I'm curious to see if ISU can do the same.

In 2005 you were coming off a Capital Bowl Win over LSU on a last second Drew Tate pass and had a 10-2 season in 2004. You were talking about winning the B1G title in 2005. You had national title aspirations. You were ranked 11th in the Preseason poll. You were ranked #8 when you came to Jack Trice Stadium to play ISU. Your memory is not very good.

Coming off a 10-2 season that included a thrilling last second 2005 Capital One Bowl victory over LSU, expectations were high. With the return of first-team All-Big Ten quarterback Drew Tate, the Hawkeyes were considered national title contenders by some publications. Indeed, the addition of a running game (which the Hawkeyes lacked in 2004 due to injuries) was thought to make Iowa even stronger. The Hawkeyes entered the season ranked 11th, their highest preseason ranking in two decades.

.....with only two returning starters on the OL and three new starters on the DL, including two undersized RS FR DT's.

Iowa was vastly overrated going into 2005. Nothing you posted above refuted the point I made: Iowa's OL/DL were weak in 2005, which resulted in the loss to ISU. Iowa's OL got manhandled by ISU's defensive front seven in that game....That won't happen in 2014.

Unfortunately, the 2004 players weren't on that 2005 team. Preseason rankings are garbage...it was what, two or three years ago when USC was preseason #1 and finished with five losses? Not sure how citing Iowa's accomplishments from 2004 relate to the 2005 team.

I was in Jack Trice for the 2005 game. I remember quite vividly what happened. Iowa's OL got punk'd but a strong ISU front seven. My memory is just fine.

That is not what I am hearing in this thread. NDSU is rated #1. Despite heavy graduation losses we are told they just reload. And a new coaching staff means nothing.

Fans had extremely high expectations going into 2005. Fact of the matter is you don't replace your entire d line that may have been the best in school history (Roth, Babineaux, Luebke and Robinson) with 2 freshmen and 2 sophomore and never miss a beat.

ISU dominated Iowa in JTS in 2005. The game would have been closer if Tate didn't get hurt but there is no way I can honestly sit here and say Iowa would have won.

If you are trying to compare that game to this years NDSU game it's also pretty obvious that the 2014 version of the Clones won't be near as talented as the 2005 squad.

The point you are missing is that the 2014 version of NDSU is not as talented as the 2013 squad. And the 2014 version of the Cyclones is better than the 2013 squad.

And we are not even sure the 2014 Hawkeyes are as good as the 2013 Hawkeyes.

How are you so sure that this years ISU team will be better than last?

Still an unknown at QB, new OC with a brand new system, d line is going to be worse, can o line stay healthy?

You don't know ISU as well as you think you do. That 2005 team was good, but it wasn't due to a ton of talent. Dobbins is the only guy that went on to have an NFL career. That team was experienced, had an easier schedule then the team does now and still only managed 7 wins, and with a lot of guys returning, followed it up with a 4-8 2006. There is more talent and depth on the roster in 2014, but it's mostly young and inexperienced.

How are you so sure they won't be? I guarantee the DL won't be worse. The QB is not unknown either, the starter hasn't been named, but the 2 guys competing aren't unknowns.

Injuries can happen to any team. What if Scherff and Davis blow out their knees in game one?

How will the d line be better?

And please post the career stats and winning percentages for the 2 QB's that have taken a meaningful snap at ISU.

QB=????
