ISU Gambling Megathread

The players decided to gamble. The players made poor choices. The players knew their actions were inappropriate and could result in suspensions/removal from team. This is 100% on the players.
Of course, I've conceded that. That doesn't mean we can't ask questions about the motives of the DCI

I respectfully disagree. The DCI wouldn't have any "motives" if the players didn't willingly engage in gambling. This isn't on the DCI at all. The DCI is simply performing their jobs.
In a very time and money consuming way. Luckily, I'm sure they have no more pressing ills of society to use those resources on.

There are probably some unsolved rapes and murders that could use more resources (since Iowa has 2502 untested rape kits as of the writing of this article):

Did these untested rape kits just appear since this investigation started or does this investigation have nothing to do with that? Presumably DCI still has to investigate other things rather than just churning through every untested rape kit before continuing other work?

They clearly gutted the department that is supposed to handle those in order to take down some ISU football players.

Those rape kits have been on the shelf and aren't going anywhere. Meanwhile, here's a case that will put us in the headlines for a long time to distract from them. Clearly some take that bait, as we've just witnessed.

Who cares how the DCI or any other organization uses their money or resources? Do you know how the DCI uses all of their time and money? Do you know how much time and money they devoted to the Iowa/Iowa State cases?

DCI wouldn't have to be scrutinized if these players simply didn't gamble in the first place.

So do they stop taking all cases until those rape kits are tested or just ones that you think don't matter?

And I definitely want the guys that are there to investigate cyber crimes and administrative issues processing rape kits. Basically the same skill set.

So were these specific people caught because of the Geo-Fence? Could, in theory, other players have done the same thing just outside of the team facilities? Or did the DCI sweep through all the database for potential rogue logins?

With Noah Shannon not being charged it makes me really confused. Did he escape charges because he used his real name/account? Or was he just off-site when he made bets? Or was he not actually caught up in this and self reported?

Which do you think is a higher priority for keeping Iowa's citizens safe? That's the question that has to be answered by anyone managing their budget and making the decisions here.
So then all financial crimes are off the table until all the rape kits are tested. No white collar crimes can be investigated in Iowa until we have cleared the backlog.

Personally, I don't care if it was a "sting" operation, if this was result of an audit, if this was a result of normal procedures, etc.

Bottom line is a handful of players decided to place bets on sporting events, with some involving Iowa State athletics and some even involving Iowa State football, and some betting while underage under false names. That is 100% inexcusable. They deserve whatever punishment is coming to them. They are not the victims.
Agree. Basically follows the old adage- You do the crime, you do the time. No way these guys didn't know they were doing wrong. And sometimes law enforcement is proactive vs. reactive.

The reason I am curious about the audit/legal process between the book & law enforcement is, could process information be used in compliance training. A scared straight approach. Not sure I have heard term "geo-fence" before this.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but the DCI wouldn't care if the player was of legal gambling age and used their real name. That's not criminal

The NCAA does not allow gambling. So while a player may not have criminal charges for gambling, they would still have to adhere to NCAA guidelines/penalties
Yeah that's kinda what I'm getting at. Was he even investigated? If not, was the media day deal a self report? Otherwise, how else would the NCAA know who to investigate/suspend if not from the DCI?

Well, if they only worked on high priority cases for keeping Iowa's citizens safe, they would never investigate these types of cases. This is why there are often different departments within organizations.
