Darius Stevens

The cyclones are like family to me and many others. I get tired of your constant bashing of them. My apologies to your wife. I'm sure that she is a saint to put up with your attitude which you claim to be positive, but have never demonstrated as such on this board.

You make a valid point. Indiana is basketball. Our schools here are big city and suburban schools. The competition is fierce for both high school and AAU. Therefore, it is not unusual for an excellent athlete to not become a starter on his varsity team until his junior or senior year. Darius will be just fine with out without ISU.

I hate to rain on this party, but Darius Stevens is barely playing this year for Merrillville, due to the fact that they have two 6'7" forwards. He hardly ever even plays in a game. He does sound talented though, from what I have read about him.

Just in case you are only familiar with Iowa High school basketball. Darius plays in a more competitive and more populated area. His high school has 3100+ students as does several other high schools they play in the area.

It is not unusual for a player not to start until his junior or senior year. Darius also transferred from a highly competitive school in which he was slated to start on the varsity team his sophomore year.

Look up Coach John Boyd at West Side High School and ask him. Anyway, Darius has time.

Absolutely brilliant!!! Why is Mac or any other D1 coach wasting time on trying to scout players and recruit them based on the talent that they demonstrate on the court. Clearly the solution is to base everything on the size of the high school. Every coach in America should simply camp out at the largest high school in the country. Any player from such a school has to be better than any whiz kid from a small school. Take any large school kid you can get - even if he's the 6th man on the consolation championship runner-up team. :arghh:

Do you dissect everything in your life and focus on the negatives like you do with ISU basketball. Or is everything else as good as it can be. I'm sure that your kids are all the best in their school (I hope it's a large school for their sake). Your wife surely has to be a knockout who cooks ups a storm and leaves you exhausted every night. If they fall short in any area, hopefully you'll give them a year tops before you kick them to the curb and start over.

Steve, you really need to get out of Iowa and see some high school basketball. Then you will know what high school basketball competition is.
I have been around basketball all my life and I have learn that early offers don't mean a thing.

Darius played at Merrillville High School this year. This school has a student body of 3100 students. The starting five were seniors. After the death of his father, Darius transferred from West Side High School were he was going to be a starter his sophomore year. He has time to get used to Merrillville. Next year will be a totally different story. Email Coach John Boyd at [email protected]. Darius is a solid athlete and can run with the best of them whether Iowa recruits him or not.

I didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest when I said he barely played this year. I was just saying don't go overboard on him yet. I personally think he will be a d1 basketball player, but it's too early to tell right now.

Dude, I don't know if you know this, but you can say all of the things you said in one post. It's an amazing concept.

Thanks for the information. I think most of us would like to have Darius at Iowa State and hope that he is recruited, but scholarships for his class appear to be heavily competitive. Another son of an Iowa State player, Harrison Barnes (Ron Harris) is looking like a 4-5 star player right in Ames, Iowa who Iowa State is heavily recruiting. We already have a comittment from a player in small town Iowa that looks to have quite a bit of potential as well.

Obviously you can never predict the future, but Iowa State's 2010 class looks to be very good. Hopefully Darius Stevens develops to his full potential and is a part of the team, I know most people would be thrilled to have that happen. You seem to be close to the situation, so if you do hear of any further insights, let us know!

I would also wager a guess that you are close to Darius. I for one want you to know that there are many of us who would love to see him at ISU. He seems to be the type of standup young man that we need. From what little I've read he also has the BB skills to make an impact on the program. Hopefully he is like his father as a man and a player. Personally I would rather have a good person with skill than a person with issues, even if his skills are greater. I hope the comments of some have not left Darius with a bad taste in his mouth. If he comes he will be loved by the fans just as they loved Barry.

People will love just about any player we sign because we love the guys who want to wear the cardinal and gold.

As for him not playing, as people have said, he is a sophomore. We all really were bummed when we didn't get Grant Gibbs this last year and he barely played until he was a junior as well. Sometimes when guys go to big schools with a lot of students, they have to wait their turn behind guys who are a bit older, more skilled, or more physically mature.

I will admit that people would be especially attached to Darius though and all of Cyclone Nation would really be pulling for him to succeed at the highest level.

I, for one, am curious why we apparently haven't already extended an offer. We seem to have no trouble doing it as early as 8th grade (which I believe was the situation with Dykstra). I know Stevens hasn't played much on his varsity squad but do you think that he might have been a starter at Rock Valley or Fremont Bergan? I do.

If Stevens has a hint of BB ability (which it appears he does) I think we should offer him ASAP (since we seem willing to do it early in other cases). He is the legacy of a player that it can be argued was the cornerstone of ISU becoming a relevant CBB school. I freely admit that I am more than a little "attached" to this kid. It will make me sick to my stomach if he ends up something other than a Cyclone...especially if ISU does not extend an offer.

I'm not sure it's accurate to say we offered a 8th grader. Dykstra commited, thats not saying he was officially offered just that he wants to come to ISU.

We offered Dykstra when he was a freshman.

Maybe we haven't offered him because Mac wants to see him play against other competition and maybe there are other guys he wants before him. He does deserve the chance to build the team however he wants to.

Pretty touchy situation. Kind of risky either way. Which is the lesser of the two evils?
a) Darius comes here on scholarship and is a bust, rarely plays
or
b) We don't seriously recruit him then see stories of him leading Butler to the Sweet 16 and how he wanted to go to Iowa State but wasn't recruited...

Do you people think that we aren't aware of Stevens? How many offers does he have? Why does ISU have to be his first offer? There's plenty of time.

He sounds like a nice ball player but the staff obviously wants to see more of him before they offer. Why is it so hard to understand that grown men, with their jobs on the line, are taking the decision to offer seriously?

There are hundreds of average D1 caliber players. So as long as you dont miss on a superstar, or get a dud..... you will be fine.

Lets face it, the number of guys that have bailed on the ISU program in the last 3 years, it really makes no sense to not offer the son of a great legacy with good grades and good skills. With ISU it isn't a matter of getting players, it is a matter of keeping them in school.

I guess I'm a little confused as to why it's being debated whether or not Darius Stevens is a basketball player worthy of a Big XII scholarship!?!

The linked article which leads off this thread is about a fresh / soph camp where the top 75 players in the midwest region were hand-selected to participate. From this elite group, Darius Stevens was selected to play in the Top 20 Game. That's enough evidence for me that the kid has game worthy of an ISU scholarship...
