Darius Stevens

Does anybody know how good Barry was in High School? Was he a top 150 recruit when ISU got him.

They retired his jersey this year, so he turned into a good one.

And his son is taller?:notworthy:

There have been alot of players that have gone through ISU that either didn't start or play until their JR or Sr year. Darius could be the same way.

Didn't I read in a post today that Vroman didn't start playing basketball until late in his high school career.

If he is athletic and has a good chance seeing the floor I would love to see him here. Plus, it really would make a good story. He's part of the Cyclone family.
 
There was a player that didn't really play until his senior year that turned out pretty good and made the NBA.
 
And there have been far more players that didn't see action in HS until their senior year that didn't play ball after HS.

I don't see what Jordan or anyone else has to do with Stevens.

I really want this kid here, but the point that was made is very valid. We're all drooling over a kid that's barely playing right now.

He's got 2 years left of HS, so who knows what will happen. But the point cyismydog mad is very valid.
 
We can't afford to take to many guys that may not be able to contribute very early in their career. This team is devoid of talent.
 
The article said his potential is off the charts. We certainly don't want a player who's father was a legend at ISU and has an unlimited upside. We are ISU!! McDonald All Americans are knocking at our door. Why would we waste our time on someone like that? I agree with the majority of you, forget this loser!

First of all, let me state for the record that I am not a big fan of all of this "early recruiting" that we (and most other schools) are doing these days.

Having said that, if McDermott was so willing to offer early to Dykstra and Eikmeier...then why not to Stevens?

Face the facts:

Dykstra plays on the varsity team of a school that has 277 kids (grades 7-12) in it (an average of 46 kids per grade). He plays small school BB in Iowa.

Eikmeier plays on the varsity team of a school that has 202 kids (grades 6-12) in it (an average of 28 kids per grade). He plays small school BB in Nebraska.

Stevens plays on the varsity team of a school that has 2120 kids (grades 9-12) in it (an average of 530 kids per grade). He plays bigger school BB in Indiana. His team this year was 16-4 during the regular season. They had 10 players on the varsity...5 seniors, 4 juniors, and one sophomore (Stevens).

My point is that it is much easier to play early in your HS career in places like Rock Valley HS or Bergan HS than it is in a school like Merrillville, HS.

Additionally, as I have heard adnauseam from the many Eikmeier supporters on here, most of these kids are playing in camps and in AAU sanctioned tournaments. I'm sure coaches have seen the kid play even if he has only limited minutes on his HS team.

The real question I have is why are so many Cyclone fans "drooling" over kids like Dykstra and Eikmeier?

Absolutely brilliant!!! Why is Mac or any other D1 coach wasting time on trying to scout players and recruit them based on the talent that they demonstrate on the court. Clearly the solution is to base everything on the size of the high school. Every coach in America should simply camp out at the largest high school in the country. Any player from such a school has to be better than any whiz kid from a small school. Take any large school kid you can get - even if he's the 6th man on the consolation championship runner-up team. :arghh:

Do you dissect everything in your life and focus on the negatives like you do with ISU basketball. Or is everything else as good as it can be. I'm sure that your kids are all the best in their school (I hope it's a large school for their sake). Your wife surely has to be a knockout who cooks ups a storm and leaves you exhausted every night. If they fall short in any area, hopefully you'll give them a year tops before you kick them to the curb and start over.

This is really not a tough topic to understand...Darius Stevens is the only sophomore on the varsity team at a school with over 500 kids in each class...do you think he might be a starter at Rock Valley or even Fremont Bergan? Heck, he might even be the best player on the team.

I'm actually a very positive person but there is not a whole lot positive about what I see going on in our BB program at ISU right now. Not much to hang your hat on other than "we run a clean program and are trying to do things the right ways".

My personal life is really none of your business but I do have a great family. My wife would certainly consider you a sexist pig for your comments above.

The cyclones are like family to me and many others. I get tired of your constant bashing of them. My apologies to your wife. I'm sure that she is a saint to put up with your attitude which you claim to be positive, but have never demonstrated as such on this board.
 
I think what everyone is wondering is why we would offer guys like Clinton Mann, Justin Hamilton, and some of these other guys who are project playes but we have no room for a kid like Darius Stevens. That is what everyone is seeing. Now here is what I am thinking. If we don't offer Darius and he goes on to be as good or even a little worse than his dad. I will be pisses off beyond beleif and will personally hold Greg Accountable. Until then I hope Mann and Hamilton are the next homan vroman.
 
I was not suggesting I wouldn't love to have him here. I just don't know if he is a schollie player yet. In all probablity he is a high d1 player, but you can't tell that if he barely plays. My post was not intended to diss him, I only meant step back and see the bigger picture.
 
Nobody is saying Darius wouldn't play for those schools...of course he would...but you continually....constantly post your doubts about Wes solely based on the fact that he plays at a small Nebraska high school against other small high schools...do you think McDermott doesn't realize that his numbers are different there then they would be if he was playing at Stevens' school? Honestly, your CONTINUOUS posts insinuating negative things about players you've never even seen play is getting old. Coaches offer scholarships based on talent level, potential, grades, and whether or not they fit a system...not who they are playing against. You don't seem to grasp that though.
 
Hopefully Darius will be attending one of our camps this summer. There is a chance he could leave with an offer in hand. Isn't that when most kids get their offers?

Yeah, that's were Eikmeier, Mann, Barnes, all got there offers.

For the record, ISU is not recruiting Darius Stevens. Stevens is only in the 10th grade and has plenty of time to be recruited. And you are right, you are ISU. Which means you are a drop in the bucket against the hundreds of colleges and universities out there.

No. kids are being recruited at AAU tournaments all over the country, every summer.

Barry was a top 150 recruit in high school after his senior year. He was heavily recruited by several schools. ISU did not recruit him. He and his coach contacted Iowa State University after his mother refused to sign his letter of intent to Minnesota. He selected ISU because of Coach Johnny Orr's connection to Michigan. For confirmation on this get the video from the 2005 ISU letterman induction and look at Barry's speech.

Yes Darius is taller.
