Countdown untill the beatdown!!!

I get why most say that, but I just think they're more experienced playing together this year and know how they have to play to win, plus a more aggressive Uthoff & more Jok/Clemmons production makes up for White's absence from last year's team. But, heck, I could be seeing something that isn't there. lol Carry on.

They're not really productive though. Jok averages 13 ppg but it taking 11.6 shots/game to get there. Compare that to last year when White was averaging 16 ppg and only taking 9.6 shots/game. Plus Clemmons isn't a threat offensively.

Fran is terrified of his bench. He has to have 4 of his starters on the floor at all times. The problem is his starters aren't great either, but solid and experienced. I can't wait to see Monte abuse Gessell on both ends of the court. Mikey might be in tears by the end of this one.

PG Morris vs. Gessell (obvious advantage to ISU)
SG Long vs. Clemmons (Despite Clemmons' superior pass-first mentality, advantage ISU)
SF Nader vs. Jok (Jok is one dimensional,. but he can get hot. Nader is way more versatile, advantage ISU)
PF Niang vs. Uthoff (Uthoff is a good player, but Niang is an All-American and thrives in these environments, advantage ISU)
C McKay vs. Woodbury LOL

These are weird matchups as I don't really like Niang guarding Uthoff on the perimeter. If you put Nader on Uthoff, then Niang is guarding a SG playing the 3 in Jok. Not ideal. Do you put Niang on Woodbury and McKay on Uthoff? Could this be a game similar to Illinois with the small ball lineup? McKay has an individual advantage over Woodbury, but it might be better for us as a team to have Niang play the 5. Iowa is not a good rebounding team.

Matchups will be very interesting. They almost have to zone or go big when our starters are on the floor, sliding Jok to the 2 and putting Uhl in with Uthoff and Woodbury. I do think McKay will guard Uthoff and Niang will guard Woodbury, both work better. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they went zone early, otherwise we run isolations for Nader on Jok all day long.

They basically go 6 deep with the starters and Uhl, with 3 freshman playing upto 10 minutes. Those 3 freshman have played pretty well, but they are going to need some post minutes from Wagner and Baer, and they've certainly never played a team as talented as ours or in an environment like Hilton. Getting some production from the freshman will be key for Iowa.

How the game is called - and how physical it is played - will be a big key as well. Both teams don't foul much and don't get fouled much. If that holds true, then the benches matter much less on both sides.

I do think we will have success going small as well, they can't play Woodbury if McKay isn't in the game. He would get completely abused by Niang or Nader. But when Woodbury is out, they get really small if their front line is Uthoff/Uhl. They need Wagner to be a presence.

They were top 25 in tempo (poss/game) 2 years ago, but last year and this year they've been slower than the average (in the ~170 range). Most of that is grinding it out on the defensive side.
I agree. Their tempo is very similar to Virginia Tech which is slow tempo. The only boost from last year has come from rules changes as tempo across the board is a bit higher.

The largest difference I see from Iowa is their shooting. They have several players capable of hitting the outside shots. That has led to their surge in assists as well. ISU has to avoid over helping and leaving shooters open.

Yep, going to a smaller lineup is the most logical decision for Phrom. It emphasizes the quickness advantage ISU has and Iowa probably won't take advantage of whatever size advantage we might have. Even last year, we weren't able to take advantage of our size against you guys.

If ISU does decide to hide Niang on Woody, Woody is going to have to be active on the offensive end.

If that's the case, Georges is lucky because against Woody, the rim is like having a second defender.

Seriously, how many dunks in his career have been stuffed by the rim. Even as an Iowa fan you just have to throw your hands up and laugh about it, with how much it happens.

I think Niang will be on Uthoff. I know we always say McKay is capable of guarding a perimeter oriented player because of his speed, but have we ever actually had him do it? I'm sure I could be wrong, I just don't remember a situation in which we have.

I realize us posters don't play the game, but I really wish I hadn't just read this. Are you the same guy that guaranteed the Texas win in KC 3 or 4 years ago? Ugh.

We aren't losing this game. Period. We win by 10+ thanks to Hilton being the madhouse it always is and the fact that we are 15 times the team that they are.

I love thinking about this game last year at Carver. Everyone was freaking out cuz BDJ got arrested but then we went in there and blew them out without him. One of the better performances by last years team for sure and an absolute blast to watch. Loved every second of that beatdown.

I think Prohm will give Niang a shot at Uthoff and adjust from there.

I doubt McKay or Niang guard Uthoff unless they put him at the 4. Uthoff tends to play at the perimeter so Nader will guard him there. Niang and McKay will guard the post. When Nader moves to the 4, Matt will most likely guard Uthoff.

Correction, by 4 I mean post him up.

Forget what this guy said. Niang may guard Uthoff if Iowa continues to play small. It will be interesting.

Actually, I think Niang will guard Big Fish and McKat will guard the rim.

(shudders) I try not to think about it too much....

That's the thing, they have to play that small. In Iowa's starting line up, Uthoff is the 4. Now that Dale is out for the season, the Iowa players with legitimate size to play the the 4 and 5 are Woodbury & Uhl, that's it.

I know this isn't your intent, but I think saying that Hilton will be the madhouse it always is sells us short this week.
Between the ranking and the rivalry, Hilton will be much nuttier than normal on Thursday.

If this makes any sense, I see a hotly contested 20 point win for ISU. Iowa plays with tremendous effort, but they tend to make stupid mistakes which will lead to ISU pulling away in a game that is somehow still intense.

Just glad we don't have to go to Historic CHA this year. Judging by tonight's crowd I don't want any part of that place.

McKay can't guard Uthoff and won't be asked to.
