COACHING SEARCH: Thanksgiving night update

I think one thing I like about Willie Fritz is his age. He could be at the point of his life where if he did good Iowa state, he may stay. This is all a guess but he may just want to retire here and get a ton of wins and be our football Johnny. Of course that's only a guess.

Any NIU coach should be viewed somewhat skeptically. A year does not go by that an NIU coach isn't viewed as a hot coach, it's been like 5 coaches in a row. Not saying an NIU coach can't be good, but a large % of their success is they are set up to win much better than most MAC teams. People call ISU a tough job to win at, NIU is an easy job to win at in their conference.

All the guys are suspect on the list. I don't understand how Pollard can say we are taking it to the next level and all we hear about are lower level coaches. Next level to me are guys that are making 2 million and we are going to offer 3.5 million. Go after Fedora at NC and Shaw at Stanford, etc. Heck I would even take Mack Brown over most of these guys. And then Frost? I would take Loney anyday over the unknown of Frost.

I hope it has been quiet and these are not the real coaches we are going after.

This was honestly my exact thought when CW and Jeremy came out with the info they had last night. Yeah way to take it to take ISU to the next level Pollard.

I didn't realize how much Fritz passed the ball at SHSU. That makes him a lot more attractive candidate to me. His option attack is closer to Oregon than Navy.

Give me an example in the last 5-10 years of a school of ISU's stature poaching a program's head coach with the type of success of Fedora and Shaw. I'd be incredibly impressed if you could.

I will say this - the quantity of candidates is a tell tale sign to me that JP is releasing some of this information to take the spin off of who he's actually after....To me the least talked about candidate is still Scott Frost out of Oregon. He said he wanted someone with midwestern connections.

I still remember this board was all talking about Brian Kelly was getting on a plane for ames and then someone said the plane was actually arriving from Austin with some dude named Chizik....

I see this replaying out.... JP is releasing candidates and names to throw up a smoke screen. Right now there's like 20 candidates that have been heard or discussed interest. If i had to guess - non of them will be our next Coach and JP is working a completely different angle... He likes surprises and surprises, especially when their good choices bring about excitement. So i will throw out a name that nobody has thrown out there....

How about Bill Callahan? Guys from Chicago, has coached at Illinois, Southern Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska and is widely considered one of the best OL coaches in the NFL.... Currently in that mess called Washington Redskins, I can tell you as a cowboy fan, he molded our OL into the unit it is today. Now i don't want to copycat anyone but, EIU hired an established OL coach, and they've been extremely successful running a pro style offense and playing smash mouth football. Not to mention that he has a lot of connections in order to build a very good staff.

Couple things here because this is one of the absolute stupidest things I've read. First of to say that Lanning would be a waste in the offense is dumb enough. Maybe it isn't the best system for him but to say he can't be successful is dumb.

Second. The Lazard stuff is some of the absolutely stupidest line of bull **** I have ever read. Maybe you don't know but this is the same offense that Lazard has played in for at least 5 of the last 7 years.

Ok also. I haven't finished this thread and haven't payed attention to the other so maybe it has been addressed, but people have talked about Todd Monken but why not Jeff Monken.
Jeff Monken would just as flipping stupid as KN for ISU.

Callahan sort of struggled over in Nebraska, although the day he was fired is one of the funniest I remember.
The news reporters live on the scene showed him going in, and he was on the way out before they finished introducing their segment.

Fleck seems like football with Tony Robins. It seems to me that would get a bit annoying after a while

People enjoyed Rhoads' high energy when we were winning. He was the right fit back then. Now, I don't think we need a motivator-in-chief.

Provide an example of a school of ISU's stature trying to poach a head coach of the examples in the last 5-10 years.

That's why your question is irrelevant.

I guess I don't understand your point? I'm not just saying ISU, but no school has done it. This isn't the case of Johnny or making 200,000 grand at Michigan and us luring him away.

While I do not think we would have any shot at Fedora or Shaw like Bax suggested I have wondered about the third name he mentioned. If Mack Brown still has the fire to coach he would go to the top of my list. He has always spoke highly of his days at ISU and I would think he could put together a pretty decent staff. He is still 12 years younger than Snyder.

A guy like PJ Fleck will be hired at some P5 school and be a huge success...the guy can recruit like no other. At a P5 school what u get is much better assistants who know how to coach and the X and O's. We could do far far worse than Fleck. Wwe have those new white helmets instantly and one cool game day atmosphere that's for sure. As for the "He pulled those poor kids scholly offers!! Gasp! So let me ask everyone this..if PJ is hired and he decides to pull half our current offers in exchange for better 3-4 star recruits are any of you going to be ******? If we hired Nick Saban next week u think any of our current commits would be coming here? Hell no. And I'd be willing to be all those players found a spot to land.

As for our next HC...I really dont know what to think anymore. There are guys who I think would be great and others I'm just not sure. And I don't think Navy Ken would just come in and go full triple option. Maybe he would implement the option as part of our offense but maybe create a hybrid option offense from the shotgun? KN seems like a very smart football mind.

It comes down to the same thing for me...who can come to ISU and consistently bring better talent.

Be a smart ***, but those guys are making a lot of money. If Pollard wants to be cheap on this hire, Leath needs to fire him now. There are real good coaches out there making around 2 million and those are the next level.

But it's stupid to think money is the only factor. Why would Fedora leave an up and coming program at UNC for a complete rebuild at Iowa State. If he keeps winning at UNC he can earn more than 3.5 million.

Those 2M coaches know they need to win in order to keep making money. That raise will only last so long if they don't win.

I think your missin it. Its not that he pulled the offers its when he pulled the offers. 2 weeks before signing day thats an integrity issue to me and i dont want him here. How many times are we bashing kids for commiting to us then changing their minds but you want to gloss over a coach who basically did worse. Im sorry cant overlook that.

Coaching changes mean that offers can be pulled. This should not be shocking. I'm OK with it even if I don't love it. And it's certainly not disqualifying of Fleck.

So you think you've came up with this revolutionary idea? The reason there are no examples, is because it doesn't work. The only way you're even going to get those guys' attention is offering 4 mill plus and with our budget, I don't think that's going to happen.

your ok with it but it if was ur son or daughter and two weeks before possibly the greatest day of there athletic career comes they are told..... welp u know i'm sorry its business no scholarship offer for you here with no time to even find another school.....you be ok with that? Integrity.
