COACHING SEARCH: Thanksgiving night update

look around at hires done at any of the P5 schools the last several years unless you are a Michigan, OSU or Texas, seldom does a top level P5 coach leave for another P5 conference job, look at Florida even last year, they went to Colorado State for the coach, look at the current coaches in the Big12. David Shaw supposedly told Texas he wasn't interested last time around

All I want is Pollard to try. The list shows he's probably not.

How do you know we didn't try? A quick phone call of - "Hey Shaw. You want to come to ISU? We'll offer you $1 million pay raise?" Shaw: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH" - wouldn't make of the reports Chris gives us every night.

I don't, but it seems when other programs do this, there is a contract extension and a raise coming for the coach real soon.

Or you are wrong with delusional expectations. Fleck may be the best option ISU might have. He took over a dead program and suffered through a 1-11 season before doing far better the following year. He is young and imo, would probably be the best option on the table.

Do you think Fedora and Shaw are a secret to the rest of the NCAA? If upping their pay would have got them to a different school it would have happened by now, or someone is already in the process. And you can bet that it isn't a school at the bottom of the pecking order like ISU.

But, I mean, it's worth a call. *sarcasm*

On all the coaching threads, I haven't see much if any love for Niumatalolo. I have seen a few people show love for Calhoun. Don't jump me if I'm wrong but don't they run similar styles of 'O'. I like Niumatalolo's record, impressive at a school that has to do more with less, sounds familiar to me. So my question is why no love for Niumatalolo?

Niumatalolo is my #1! For the reasons of doing more with less, his experience, and bringing a unique style of offenses to the Big 12

Be an ISU defeatist. I'm saying the min we need to pay is 3.5 million and guarantee it for 4 years.....Enough we can attract a good coach.

That is taking it to the next level.

There are plenty of "lower level" coaches who have jumped to bigger universities and succeeded very well.

I don't see Ken as a home run hire either. It would be interesting, but I'd feel horrible for Lazard, Dvario etc

The next 2 years would be a waste while rebuilding for the option.

I wouldn't. Go ask Barry Switzer about the option and its passing game. He seemed pretty convinced that his passing game was outstanding, but no one saw it because they couldn't stop OU's running game.
Sure, he's full of himself and all, but option teams produce WRs better than we do.

Does anybody know of a resource that would tell us how much was spent on salaries in the football department this past year? Curious of what our total budget would be. Rhoads was around $2M and Wally and Mangino were probably close to another $1M combined. Rest of staff would be how much, another $1.5M or so, combined?

I wonder how much ISU's total staff budget compares with other Big 12 teams, and if a $2M budget increase is feasible to account for a new head coach hire and appropriate incentive to build anew staff.

,

Yes, I detest the QB under-the-center triple option offense and a KN hire would disastrous for the following reasons:

1. There is no QB on the current roster or in the existing recruiting pipeline to run it. Lanning has been a Shotgun Spread QB thru HS and at ISU. It would be an absolute waste of his talent for him to play in that offense.

2. The OL for that offense are smaller/quicker OL that cut block for the most part. The returning OL are ill-suited to play in that system. And since cut blocking is illegal in the NFL, good luck trying to recruiting top notch OL who eventually want to play in the NFL. Same deal with WRs (C.Johnson and D.Thomas did not commit to GT while Paul Johnson was HC.) and I would not blame Lazard transferring to a FCS program if KN is hired.

3. Due to #1 and #2, it will take at least 2 or 3 seasons for KN to get the required personnel for that offense. ISU is currently sitting on it's best collection of offensive talent in the past 10 years and it would be a bleepin disaster for the program to squander that talent with KN.

4. KN runs a bleepin phone booth offense. ISU can run the ball effectively out of a Power Shotgun Spread or Shotgun Spread Option which is exactly what they did after the Fat Man left. ISU cannot win with a damn phone booth offense and that includes a pro style under-the-center offense as well but a KN offense is far worse since you can't effectively pass the ball if you're behind.

5. KN has recruited service academy kids for the past 9 years which is far different than recruiting HS and JUCOs in the B12.

KN is the farthest thing from a home run hire for ISU, it would be a damn disaster.

Couple things here because this is one of the absolute stupidest things I've read. First of to say that Lanning would be a waste in the offense is dumb enough. Maybe it isn't the best system for him but to say he can't be successful is dumb.

Second. The Lazard stuff is some of the absolutely stupidest line of bull **** I have ever read. Maybe you don't know but this is the same offense that Lazard has played in for at least 5 of the last 7 years.

Ok also. I haven't finished this thread and haven't payed attention to the other so maybe it has been addressed, but people have talked about Todd Monken but why not Jeff Monken.

The type of efforts your asking for "hey David Shaw, this is Jamie Pollard...LOL...click..." aren't high enough profile to get reported on.

Of course Shaw is going to hang up if he thinks all ISU is willing to pay is 1.5 million. If he knew ISU was willing to pay 3.5 million, I don't think he would hang up. He may get a new contract and raise from Stanford however.

Pollard is the one who said he was taking it to the next level, not me. I just want him to follow through on his words.

Johnny didn't hang up on ISU because he found out ISU was willing to pay his assistant double than he was making and the rest was history.

Pollard needed to put out ISU was willing to pay in the 3.5 million + range and people wouldn't laugh or hang up. They would either have interest or use it as leverage.

$2m budget increase could come from the folllowing:
Sell remaining 1000 End Zone Club tickets ($750,000)
Regain the 1500 $425 season ticket holders they lost last year ($637,500)
Sell an additional 3500 $175 season tickets in upper deck of new end zone($612,500)

Ken is a disciple of Paul Johnson. With our wideouts, i have a feeling that Ken would figure out a way to get the ball to Warren and the Wide Out Boyz.... Ga Tech has had success with Wide Receivers out of the option - see demaryus thomas....it can be done. But i know where your coming from, our current roster is better situated for a pro style or spread style HC.

BTW - im not a fan of the hire - just saying that guy thats been as successful and as long as he has, can adjust to his talent pool. My hat is still in Fritz corner!!!!

CW put this on Twitter. If you read it, little ways down the list it states in the article that he is more of a motivator then and x's and o's guy. That the same type of guy we just fired. Fleck may be a good recruiter but give me a coach that's going to coach.

PJ Fleck's personal life would seem to be the polar opposite to the coaches (past and present) that we have/had at Iowa State.

Fleck = thumbs up.

I'll take this as good news, albeit a rumor.

Not a fan of Fleck. When he got the job at Western Michigan he informed all the kids who were committed just 2 weeks before signing day that they wouldnt honor their scholarships. I mean he didnt even give kids time to find another school, to me thats a tell tell sign. I know Jamie wouldnt allow that here but I dont think anyone capable of doing that to kids dreams is an ISU guy.

Troy Calhoun would be a great option if ISU is willing to go to a pure running attack.

Yes. They lost to teams that are competing for or will win their conference. They also were fairly respectable in all but one of those losses. Then, they pretty much thumped everyone else.

I'm not as high on Fleck as I was last year but due to his recruiting, I think his floor may be the highest of anyones. A lot of the other guys listed could be huge flops because they haven't proven to be great recruiters like Fleck has. He's also going to be a guy that will bring a lot of energy to the program.

Seems like kind of a rock star. Brings a lot of attention to himself. If he wins here, no one will give a crap, but if he struggles it will get old real fast.

I really like his potential though. He seems like he's good at selling his program, which we will need.
