COACHING SEARCH: Thanksgiving night update

Yeah I'm not sold on military school coaches as another poster above eluded to. Recruiting is a completely different game here and that's really what Iowa State needs.

Somebody really doesn't like the triple option.
,

Yes, I detest the QB under-the-center triple option offense and a KN hire would disastrous for the following reasons:

1. There is no QB on the current roster or in the existing recruiting pipeline to run it. Lanning has been a Shotgun Spread QB thru HS and at ISU. It would be an absolute waste of his talent for him to play in that offense.

2. The OL for that offense are smaller/quicker OL that cut block for the most part. The returning OL are ill-suited to play in that system. And since cut blocking is illegal in the NFL, good luck trying to recruiting top notch OL who eventually want to play in the NFL. Same deal with WRs (C.Johnson and D.Thomas did not commit to GT while Paul Johnson was HC.) and I would not blame Lazard transferring to a FCS program if KN is hired.

3. Due to #1 and #2, it will take at least 2 or 3 seasons for KN to get the required personnel for that offense. ISU is currently sitting on it's best collection of offensive talent in the past 10 years and it would be a bleepin disaster for the program to squander that talent with KN.

4. KN runs a bleepin phone booth offense. ISU can run the ball effectively out of a Power Shotgun Spread or Shotgun Spread Option which is exactly what they did after the Fat Man left. ISU cannot win with a damn phone booth offense and that includes a pro style under-the-center offense as well but a KN offense is far worse since you can't effectively pass the ball if you're behind.

5. KN has recruited service academy kids for the past 9 years which is far different than recruiting HS and JUCOs in the B12.

KN is the farthest thing from a home run hire for ISU, it would be a damn disaster.

I like that Fritz knows the JUCO scene. I really think that we can have continued success with him if he gets to Ames.

Fleck is really known as a recruiter. Someone earlier mentioned their 4 Star RB commit. He had a knee injury while originally committed to Michigan and then ended up at WM. He had a lot of high level offers, Michigan, MSU, Ohio State, and lots more. Pretty impressive to pull in that type of talent. His recruiting sticks to the Upper Midwest for the most part, so hopefully he could bring in some guys that know the South/JUCO scene.

I would bet you never see significant carries from Matt Falcon. He's been hurt numerous times and none of those offers were good. Michigan offered him a medical to go to school there but he wants to try and play.

Yeah, well what's happened when they've been forced to throw? They're awful. Why? Because now their conference has seen it for a few years. I want nothing to do with it. I don't think it's sustainable in a conference that is already using a lot of similar concepts from different formations and is essentially training a defense to stop it not to mention they are built to defend it from a personnel standpoint. If it was a system that worked, others would have used it. No QB that can throw it is going to want to come here to throw it 15 times a game and I don't believe you can be one dimensional.

Fritz, to me, is a little different because he hasn't been forced to adapt yet. They crush it on the ground. I'm still Leary, though. Honestly, I like the system we were using. A run heavy offense with a lot of intermediate passing and a little bit of testing the edges to keep people honest. The more I think about the triple option the more I just don't see it working for very long. I don't want the air raid but I think you have to be able to recruit good QBs that can throw it and I don't think a TO coach can do that.

So, I guess here's where I'm at:

1. Fleck
2. Campbell
3. Frost
4. Fritz
5. Alford

Even if Fleck leaves after three years, the one thing we have very solid proof of is that he will be able to recruit. Even if he recruits the same guys as he was at WMU, he's doing well. AT least if he leaves, there may be something there. With those other guys, who the hell knows. Some of them could flop big time.

So if Fleck is such a great recruiter then why is WMU only 6-5 this year? Is he a great recruiter that is not so good at coaching?

Wow... just... wow

So if Fleck is such a great recruiter then why is WMU only 6-5 this year? Is he a great recruiter that is not so good at coaching?

Most of his recruits would just be freshmen or sophomores now accounting for redshirts. Still, it would be nice to see more than just one good year on his resume.

And you really think the triple option would work in the Big XII? The speed we face on defense negates many of the advantages, and its hard to flip a switch so we'd have several years of rebuilding to get to a place of competitive stature, if we got there at all. Personally I'm not a fan of the triple option and think it would be one of the worst directions we could go, with a defensive coordinator being the only worse direction.
Oh no, I'm not really a fan of Ken N's triple option. I think we should do the power spread like Willie Fritz ran at Sam Houston State. I just wanted to point out that a triple option isn't yes run on every down like people think.

My concern is I don't think Fleck would be here more than 2-3 years. While I don't mind being a stepping stone, we need something longer than that.

Fleck would bounce on ISU quickly. I'm actually surprised that he's shown any interest in the job. When asked about the Illinois job he said that he would rather coach a school like Iowa that had more to offer. He seems like a guy that will end up coaching at USC sometime in the future.

I can't find the original article that has his exact quotes but this one i've linked below talks about how he would prefer a school like Iowa at the bottom of the article.

I'm curious why Todd Monken is left off your list. Very successful balanced offense and solid defense this year at USM. Small sample size, sure, but he's proven himself elsewhere. Great football mind. I'd argue as good as Stitt offensively with D1 and big 12 experience to boot.

We are a stepping stone.

Maybe. Maybe he couldn't attract great coordinator talent. He did play OSU and MSU in the non-con so I'm not going to hold that against him. Frittz did smoke him and then he lost to two of the best teams in the conference. One of those coaches is a candidate for this job and the other will have a big time job elsewhere. Yeah, it's the MAC but he didn't lose to a bad football team. I'm not saying he's a sure thing but I'm having a tough time finding anything that's more of a sure thing. FWIW, I don't think any of the mentioned guys are staying here very long. Maybe the older guys would but I doubt it. Flecks as weird as anyone so maybe he would hold out a little longer, who knows.

To me, Monken and Fleck aren't all that different in their HC success. Southern has played a much easier schedule this year and even though records are different, I would call this season a wash. Monken is probably a better football mind and Fleck is probably a better recruiter. Give me the recruiter, and here's why:Recruiting isn't just about players, it's about coaches as well and I think he could put together a better staff here than he has now. That's also why Stitt scares me a little.

I don't think Monken is a real serious candidate, either, which is why I left him off. I don't really think Frost is either but he was the one coordinator I threw in because I don't think this search will be made up entirely of HCs. I really think there are only four real candidates right now. Ken N, Fleck, Campbell and Fritz. Obviously more will be interviewed, but I think it will be like a Levell Moton type of deal.

If he is good enough to be hired at USC someday, hire him immediately

More and more I am putting P.J. Fleck atop the wish list. I want him as our head coach. He seems like the right fit.

Sounds like Rhoads. Coordinator problems. Tough schedule.

In Fleck's first year at WMU, it sounds like he screwed a bunch of kids who were just getting ready to commit by pulling their offers a few weeks before signing day. In the video, the kid says it happened to all but one or two kids in the original class. It sounds like many high school coaches in central Indiana won't talk to Fleck anymore. Is there anyone in our current group of commits that we don't want to lose?
