Always a shame seeing student athletes in the police blotter, but I hope that the lesson is learned and that the process he is about to go through ultimately leads to Matt learning a life lesson relatively cheaply when judged against the ramifications if that same choice had lead to tragedy.
Whenever a student gets into trouble I think of that quote in the Memorial Union by RJ Riggs "We come to college not alone to prepare to make a living, but to learn to live a life". That preparation and learning never comes without mistakes, in fact, the lessons learned from mistakes are often those we learn the most from.
I'm certain that Matt (and Nader) will have all the resources and support that they need to learn from these situations. If there are any issues deeper than an isolated lapse of judgement I hope these young men are able to get the support and guidance from their teammates, coaches, and families. There is no avoiding the glare of public scrutiny when you are in a high profile position, but hopefully that scrutiny will be a positive force that encourages reform and accountability. I am really glad my life wasn't under the microscope at that age, I don't think that I could have handled it.
