Sending a text while driving is dangerous for the 5 to 10 seconds you text. Driving drunk is dangerous the entire time the person is behind the wheel. There is a difference.
I understand the western states without a lot of people wouldn't need a state law. And then you just have the South being the South.
The problem is how to enforce it. The only way to make the law effective is to ban all use of electronic devices while driving. Many states now ban texting but allow using the phone for calls, internet, etc. Hard to enforce just texting.
Texting while driving is insanely dangerous. I've been nearly killed by plenty of people texting and driving just to see that when I finally get around them they're still texting and probably had no clue to begin with how close they came to going to jail for manslaughter. When people drive drunk, there are usually just a few of them on the road. When it comes to texting and driving, I would guess in the DC area on the interstates that about 30-40% of people are doing it at the same time. That's what makes this so dangerous is seeing about one of every three cars with the driver texting. That being said, there's still no excuse for what Matt did.

I'm not sure what is wrong with you, but driving drunk is not the normal experience, and being disappointed in someone who does that it's not being self-righteous.
I really want to know what he blew. OWI has become so common now as government uses it as a money maker. Ask any Human Resources department. OWI used to get you cut from employment instantly for many jobs, however now they can't risk to do that as it gets rid of too many qualified candidates.
The legal limit is also there for the lowest denominator of all people. 98% of people could drive at .12 and be just fine, probably more alert than normal as they are actually paying attention. It's so low because of so many idiots out there who were probably ****** drivers to begin with.

I also like how many act that when someone gets a OWI, they must have drank a fifth of vodka and were driving GTA style all over the place endangering everything. I'd like to see the stats of Alcohol related crashes in Iowa vs. # of OWI/DUI's for the past 20 years.

This is the thing. Almost everyone does something every day in a vehicle that increases the likelyhood of an accident, and thus the likelyhood of a fatality. Maybe not to the degree of drunk driving, but the frequency with which people do it still makes it a bigger problem. Plus not all drunk driving is equal. How is .07 ok but .09 is not. Bottom line, I get sick of people who do all sorts of things that increase risk while driving acting like anyone who gets an OWI was attempting murder. Drinking and driving is a bad idea, and I certainly don't condone it. Hell, I left my car and took a taxi home from a bar last night. But the fact is the VAST majority of the time someone makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking too much they get home just fine, just like most of the time people get away with all the other stupid stuff they do in cars.
I don't think that was his point. He is just offering what I believe is a realistic, empathetic perspective on the situation. If you have not sinned, cast the first stone and change Naz's face in your username pic to your own.
****** decisions are in a 19 year old's DNA and ****** decisions are in everyone's DNA when they are drunk. Considering the heavy fines and penalties that come with a DUI, I am sure Matt will feel the pain of this for years to come.

ya I'm not going to feel for a guy who endangers other people because he can't call a cab or walk. Sorry.
