Another arrest

That's the thing here. I think 19 year olds and plenty of other people do dumb things. We all do. It doesn't make them less dumb. I also don't think people on CF should come down on him like a load of bricks, but this is something. It's not just boys being boys so it's ok.

SIAP but if the tail light got him pulled over and the cop decided he was suspicious (a college student) then it's on...and if you're under 21 there is no legal limit, any blood alcohol and you're busted. So he might not have been drunk.

But you're right. He should've found a party and stayed there. It drives me nuts because it's not hard to NOT get busted. For ******'s sake he's gotta know some people around Campus Town to hang with and not in a bar or in a car.

I'll clear it up for you: the jock-sniffers are going to minimize offenses like this; hope the rest of us can be Cyclone fans without worshipping the ground that the athletes walk on.

....he wouldn't have to go far, and on the way he could change his avatar, like an all star. Smoking a cigar from afar.

Also: heavy drinkers who need every excuse to rationalize their own behavior.
I've learned here that everything goes when alcohol is involved, and that is apparently how it should be.

He should not drink it in a car. He should not drink it in a bar.
He should not drink and smoke a cigar. He should not drink and smoke weed with Bill Maher.

It is something, but what is it? What was his blood alcohol level? Is this his first offense? How far was he driving? It's not a black and white issue. I had a good friend who got an OWI for pulling his car from his driveway to his backyard and was barely over. Dumb move, but not worthy of the knee jerk, disproportianate outrage some have when they see the letters OWI. We don't have any details other than he has been charged with OWI.
 
Literally every Odub is preventable and usually pretty easily so. That's why it's frustrating.

I disagree with the pretty easily part. I don't drive over a .08, anymore, but its a big pain in my ***. The pathetic .08 litmus test is easy to reach. I have to be careful to monitor how much wine or beer i have at when out to dinner. I have to be careful when watching a game at a buddy's. or grilling. Or at any event where alcohol is involved. And I have to ensure someone is under a .08 to drive home from tailgating. Notice i didnt say able to drive home safely. Plenty of people are perfectly capable at a .1

Unfortunately, I think this goes beyond the issue of jock-sniffers. The alcohol-worship culture in our society continues to thrive. And I don't say this because one kid at a school of 30,000 students got an OWI. I say this because of the number of people who try to minimize the seriousness of drinking and driving. I was hoping that the latest VEISHEA disaster might cause some reflection about this problem amongst those who have an interest in ISU.

Oh well, at least there was a new excuse this time that I hadn't seen before (i.e. texting and driving is much worse than drinking and driving, so therefore drinking and driving shouldn't be a big deal)...

Also, do you really think that most people hold the basketball team to a higher standard and that it's anywhere close to perfection?

You act like the so called "alcohol-worship" is a new phenomenon. Humans have been obsessed with alcohol since they first learned how to make it. Thousands of years ago.

He didn't act like it was something new. Perhaps you are obsessed with it, but I wouldn't use that word describing the relationship between humans and alcohol.

Old excuse. Not impressed.

Lest we forget, indifference to alcohol abuse combined with "jock-sniffing" was responsible for the demise of ISU MBB for the better part of a decade.

I don't think he should get any shade of gray. He broke two laws. One of which can kill others. Could he get forgiveness if it is the first offense? Maybe, but what consequence will persuade him not to do it again? I don't think it is too awful to miss a few games.

You do realize that's the point right? They want you to think and plan ahead, so someone isn't intoxicated can drive.
It's pretty stupid to not plan ahead.
 
So take the last however many OWI threads. This one is identical to them - regurgitation of the same extreme views on both sides.
