*** Official Iowa vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

Sports is linear to some. I whiffed on how much better ISU has looked after Feast Week but still understand that not often are two weeks or games the same.

That just means you understand basketball. Some on here would probably be best served watching a different sport.

Tyrese Haliburton? Ron Bayless? Will Blalock? Curtis Stinson? Royce White? Monte Morris? .... Tamin Lipsey? The reason people are pulling up old Tinsley videos is because he might be one of the greatest ball handlers in basketball history. Not just ISU history.

Gilbert is a very good ball handler. Not even close to the best ever at ISU though. Nothing against Gilbert. I hope he does end up being the greatest ball handler in ISU history. That would be awesome.
Blalock is a good call here.

Tinsley is in a class all his own. I'd include Stinson (not a super tight handle, but had some style), Diante Garrett, Korie Lucious, and Mike Taylor if we're talking about tight handles with some flair.

You're digging up youtube vids on a player that was at ISU 20+ years ago to argue Gilbert doesn't have the best handles in ISU history. Ok, you have to pull Tinsley into the conversion to make an argument. Anyone else? He'd be the only one I can think of. Good company as I've mentioned. Dig up a youtube vid of Gilbert going behind his back to King while you're researching youtube.
Those passes are really nice. They are not Tinsley level in any way shape or form. Give it up already. Tinsley had better handle, period. That doesn't mean Gilbert won't go down as a great guard for us. I really like him as a player too.

Tinsley is in a class of his own at the top. Not just from talent, but accomplishments.

I'd put Monte a notch below JT. Accomplished 4 year player, not the flash of Tinsley but a very steady PG - that A/T ratio record doesn't get enough love.

I'd put Lipsey and Gilbert in that next tier with Haliburton, Stinson, Blalock, Garrett and so on. With a focus on Lipsey as the more pure PG; Tamin has a clear path to move into that second tier with Monte, and maybe challenge Tinsley depending on what these ISU teams accomplish.

We should remember that Michael Nurse was a good PG before Tinsley came around and he could go about anywhere with the ball. Horton was also very good.

They weren't guards but guys like Kenny Pratt and Niang had very unique ways of handling the ball as well.

Seems to be a theme from football as well.

If sports were linear like those folks need them to be, we wouldn't watch them.

Granted these forums/threads aren't indicative of fans as a whole. But if the other team making a run causes you to come unglued, it may be time to take a break

Any good chants during the game? I heard 'You suck Dix' on a highlight video, but couldn't catch any during the broadcast. I always enjoy the creativity from the student section.

So... the way I compare the two. Tinsley was like rocking the baby to sleep, spreading warm butter on a piece of toast, oops, you just dropped your jock back there, better go pick it up and I'll just put this in the bucket, thanks. Gilbert is like, if you get in my ******* way I'm am going to go through your ass ************, oh and it will happen before you start to slide, so don't even try!

Gilbert is a darn good ballhandler. Tinsley was a make you look completely stupid at any point he wanted great ballhandler. When Gilbert dribbles through someone's legs and no looks a dunk dime in the Big 12 championship game, I'll start allowing the comparison. (I guess I HAVE liked his couple behind the back interior assists though. They have been cool.)
Why would I youtube Tinsley? Sat in Hilton and watched him play plenty. Different type of handles than Gilbert. Tinsley used his length more. Gilbert is quicker. Tinsley finished around the rim better, but to my eye Gilbert is faster with both hands. Not knocking Tinsley since I think he's the best guard we've had. Gilbert is just that good. Hope he sticks one more year.
Just love seeing Gilbert develop this year will be a joy (delightful!).

Also Tamin is going to continue to develop his PG and assist skills. If he can really improve in this area (already very good), and perhaps be a little more dynamic and flashy (meant in a good way), look out NBA. He will also continue to improve his shooting.

Tamin playing with Deshon, and vice versa, can only help each player.

Haliburton had best handle not Tinsley. To me good handle means controlling the ball without turning it over. Tinsley had some Globetrotter moves and wowed people but he also often turned it over. He was turnover prone and very low percentage shooter.

Kane and Stinson had fearlessness and toughness that I also see in Gilbert. He, like Lipsey, is very determined when his team needs him.
