Greensboro Travel Planning and Sessions

Does anyone know what session the Clones will be playing on the 17th? We live in Richmond and are planning on going down. Trying to figure out tickets before prices get out of control.

Went to the women's game last year in Greensboro, and the Marriott downtown is a solid hotel choice. Just as a heads up, there is nothing at all around the stadium, so will be interesting to see where they have pre-game parties. You're definitely going to want to plan on Uber - not the best city.

If you have any news - please let us know!

Twister Sister Summary - The best team wins!

The rubber match for this year. An imposing team with a great pressure point guard. UT was down one guard but incredibly dangerous. For our ladies the usual need to be aggressive on defense and getting shots to fall is the magic equation. Time to find out.
Both teams started out looking a wee bit tight. Missing on their first possessions. Even bunnies. Joens got the scoring started with a three.

Texas responded with two straight scoring trips against a zone that appears to have some holes in it. We will see.
Emily had her first careless turnover against minimal pressure. Ash stole the ball back and went coast to coast for two.
UT got multiple offensive boards on one possession and each time the d stepped up for a stop. Wow. Six min in and the sisters led a low scoring affair 7-4. Neither side was shooting well.
Officials were letting lots of contact go uncalled. Both sides continued to struggle on offense. UT was dominating the offensive boards and it is paying off. Diew got an O board of her own and sliced in for two. Kane took a dish from Joens for two and the sisters led 14-11 after one.
First was marked by lots of UT rebounds but a resilient sisters defense.

The second started with UT netting a three to tie it up. The sisters misfired underneath on the return. After another ISU miss UT ran the floor for the lead. Kane knotted things up after some nifty footwork. Ryan turned the ball over after deciding to pass mid jump shot. UT drives after the steal and retook the lead 18-16.
The offense was just wonky and having to force late shots that weren’t falling. Ryan finally nailed a three to retake the lead in this back and forth game.
Officiating was an inconsistent mess and as usual it was costing the sisters. UT scored back to back baskets and got a weird displacement call to push their lead to 23-19.
Ashley answered back with a three. After a turnover we turned it right back on an errant inbounds pass. Of course UT scored. 25-22 Texas. Our offense has reverted to the bad Ryan dribble dribble late shot.
Donarski drove for two and missed the and one. On the other end UT continues to dominate the offensive glass. Fortunately they also missed a lot. Wow…the officials are letting this game be a scrum. Joens scores to end the half with UT leading 27-26.
Story of the first half is three fold. Texas dominating the boards. ISU missing shots and horrendous officiating.

Kane opened the third quarter scoring with a pair of free throws. UT responded and then Fritz turned it over. After another UT bucket Joens nailed a three. All tied up at 31 early.
UT continued to get offensive boards and somehow kept missing. Joens looked pissed. She started going at UT with a vengeance. Scored a traditional three to retake the lead 36-33. Followed with 1-2 from the line. It was the Joens show on offense. Another feed inside and another UT foul. At the five minute media timeout ISU led 37-33.
Diew picked up her third foul. Joens drove again and picked up a pair at the line. ISU in the bonus the rest of the quarter. Kane made one of two.

ISU was called for back to back fouls on one possession. But they didn’t hurt us. The ladies kept going to the line and missing. Donarski made 1-2. Joens to the line again and again missed one. What’s up with all the misses? We should be up 8-19 and only lead by 5, 42-37.
Donarski got elbowed to the face and somehow gets called for the foul. UT closed to 3. Diew hit for three at the buzzer and ISU led 47-39 after three.

The fourth started with a UT bucket in close. Kane responded in kind. Donarski got a steal, raced full court and…missed the layup. Ryan followed with a travel. But Joens powered in and the lead was ten.
After a couple of back and forth misfires on both squads Donarski drove and collected the two free throws. Boom…Ryan for three and the lead was 56-41. UT was visibly frustrated. Five minutes to go
Both offenses started misfiring. Vic “assaulted” the ref on the court and no technical. Wow. ISU kept coming up empty and UT is slowly crawling back in. After two UT misses UT crashes the board and gets fouled. They keep missing at the line and from the field. Donarski drove for two and UT answers with a three. Lead is 58-48 with two minutes to go.
Joens was fouled again and made a pair. Joens hits one more and UT scores a meaningless three. Game over. ISU wins.

Observations

POG - who else but Joens. She took over this game in the third. You could say the team fit this as they played with grit and determination. Nothing seemed to sway their drive.
All tournament team - Donarski and Joens is MVP

I could talk about each individual player as normal, but this truly was a team win if there ever was one. Key shots, powerful rebounds, and a swarming defense that clearly frustrated Texas the entire second half. They were showing it from the last 4 minutes on.
Free Throws - these were the difference makers, but we missed way too many going 14-20.
Rebounds - stayed even throughout the second half. Fought like crazy for em.
Three pointers. Perfect numbers for an ISU team. Make 40%. Don’t shoot mass quantities (17) and make them at critical times.
Now we wait a few hours and see if two big wins over ranked teams are enough to warrant consideration to host. The ride has begun! Time for a new conference championship sweatshirt to join my ones from 20 years ago.

ESPN is trash

So I get home from lunch- where I watched our women’s team trying to bring home another conference title. We left the restaurant at halftime, I rush home and get on ESPN to get an update- here’s the pic ESPN has on its website: a stock pic of OKLAHOMA State, not Iowa State, playing Texas.

We make it all the way to the title game and they can’t manage one lousy picture of our team?! People wonder why our fans have a chip on our shoulder.

Power of the Pops keeps working…

The Power of the Pops crew is back and the magic they bring has been timely and helpful this year! Both games this tournament the pops came out when the ladies needed the magical boost and respond they did! Fun stuff. They’ve been at it since year one of the Fennelly tour. Here’s the original story about them from 2008.

WBB: Nyamer Diew, the team mantra & the Cyclones that advanced to the Big 12 title

My story from Kansas City today, hope you enjoy it and thanks for following our coverage:

Twister Sister Summary - sisters crank up the heat and beat OU

Well it’s a matchup of near equals. On paper ISU matches up quite well. In the last meeting we handled them quite well. This time around young Joens has become a more integral part of their offense. What will give today? Time to find out
First three possessions were blanks from Joens and Donarski. Finally Joens nailed it from deep. OU was off to a hot start and ISU was 1 for 5 with two turnovers. OU leD 8-3 early. The ISU offense was out of sorts missing layups and turning the ball over. Add to it the ladies are racking up the fouls on our posts. Izzi with two and Kane with one 4 min in.
The offense kept driving and turning it over into a collapsed defense. No jumpers. Meanwhile OU kept pulling ahead. 11-3 five min in. Yep…one stinking basket.
Finally Donarski hit a three and OU answered back inside. Fritz nailed the next three to pull ISU back to 13-9. Diew did it on both ends with a trey and taking a charge. Fritz got a second chance basket. Things are heating up as ISU took the lead on two Joens free throws.
OU takes the lead 19-18 on a pair of free throws to end the first.
The second started back and forth with both teams getting threes. Crazy pace. Joens took Joens to the hole for a pair of free throws. ISU edges out front 25-22.
OU was warming up from deep and tied the game at 27. Diew hit for another three to retake the lead. After a great defensive stand Joens collected a dumb charging foul without the ball. Darn!
At the four min mark ISU was in the bonus. Diew nailed another trey! After we went on a run the ladies then respond with turnovers leading to easy points. OU stormed back from six down to tie it at 37 on another Robertson trey. Kane would get free throws and gets 1 of 2.
After a steal with time running out Donarski scored on a drive as time expired and an 42-39 ISU halftime lead. These teams are sizzling. ISU is shooting 48% to OU’s 44%!

The third quarter started with a missed layup by Donarski, but next time down she nailed a trey. Ryan scored inside. Next possession Ashley hits for two and goes over three thousand for her career! Donarski nailed another three and the lead eased out to 9. Solid defense kept frustrating OU. Donarski drove, scored and was fouled. The FT extends the lead to 14, 59-45.
The offense went into neutral for a couple of minutes, but the defense was doing a yeomans job of frustrating OU. Four straight possessions for ISU with no points. OU was gaining some ground at the free throw line. Lead was down to ten 63-53. A layup by Joens before the buzzer extends the lead to 66-53 at the end of three. ISU is shooting a blistering 52% for the game.
The fourth started with a Donarski lay in and a defensive stop. Diew made two free throws and it was 69-53. Good defense by both teams slowed the scoring. OU was getting hot and closed the gap with 7 straight. ISU is just chucking up threes. Lead slipped down to 10.
The offense continued to miss and OU keeps closing and it was 8 with 4:39 left. The offense hasn’t been able to solve OU’s defense. Threes are cold. Meanwhile OU keeps chipping away.
OU scores again and the lead was only six. We chucked up another trey and miss again. Four min left in the quarter and we were stuck on four points. But on the next possession Joens drives hard and scores! Diew would mail another three! But OU answered with one of their own. The lead was 8 with 3 to go.
Ryan hit a three at the shot clock buzzer and the lead was 11 with 2 to go. The lead would waver around 8-10 as the teams battled back and forth.
The offense started dribbling clock and OU had to pick their poison as Donarski, Ryan and Joens were exchanging the ball. Joens was fouled and hit two. The crowd starts chanting the standard “SEC” which morphs to “Let’s go State!” Final 82-72.
Observations

POG for this one goes to Diew. Her getting hot on offense and making some solid defensive plays were a huge difference maker at a critical time. 19 points and 3 boards.
Joens - she is playing like the clock is approaching midnight. 22 points the hard way as she was fairly cold from deep.
Donarski - what an up and down day. Missed a couple easy ones but came back hard with 20 points overall.
Ryan - 9 points, 5 boards, 5 assists and only 2 turnovers. Nice point line.
Kane - still battles but this wasn’t the kind of game she flourishes in. 3 points and 1 rebound.

Fritz - a tough day from the field. 9 points and 7 tough boards. She was tenacious on D.
Zingaro - she continues to maximize her impact in minutes played. No points today, but her presence altered things.
Free Throws - 13 of 15 from the line. Each one was critical.
Rebounds - barely outrebounded -4.
These were two teams with similar makeups. The difference in my opinion was ISU’s defense. They were sticky tough all afternoon. Defense leads to offense and even when ISU had some scoring droughts the defense covered it up.
Next up is Texas for the title. This will be a tough physical game and the ladies are going to need every tool at their disposal. They need to limit fouls and be aggressive at both ends. See you all tomorrow at Hilton South!

Any home security system experts here?

I bought a fixer-upper house, which came with an alarm system. I know absolutely nothing about it, the realtor knows absolutely nothing about it (it was a foreclosure home), and the local company that serviced it has gone out of business. I am seriously considering ripping it out and selling the parts on eBay (they go for a pretty penny since they are not made any more, especially the controller), but I think it would be fun to play with it a bit before doing so. It is a "GS3055-I" controller, if that tells you anything. I did google it and found some information, but I thought maybe someone here might know more.

WBB: Cyclones put everything together in quarterfinal win over Baylor

My story from KC tonight on Iowa State's execution-based quarterfinal win over Baylor:

Twister Sister Summary - ladies vanquish Baylor

Playing Baylor is always nerve wracking. Usually we are playing against much better athletes and coaches. This year was different though. Still nervous going in.

In the beginning the threes were falling. Ryan was being a bit loose with the ball and this would be concerning all game.

On the other end there was solid defense and GREAT rebounding. Kane was doing a great job inside.

One example being a beautiful drive and assist to Joens with Kane scoring. Five min in and it’s 15-5.

Diew picked up two fouls in 15 sec. Unreal.

Ladies were not taking care of the ball as it was a very physical game with some (lots) spotty calls.

Baylor came storming back after some turnovers and it was quickly 19-14. I swear Ryan is the slowest player on the court. Had a breakaway for a layup and was easily caught and blocked.

Bad call of the half was an over and back that should have been a foul. Fennelly about was T’d up and I couldn’t blame his reaction.

End of one and it’s 19-14. Baylor closed on a 9-4 run mainly due to careless ball care. Baylor has missed a lot of easy shots.

To start the second, the threes have gone cold. Ryan was being a mess with the ball. The ladies were on a 4 min scoring drought before Joens nailed a three. Baylor would answer by nailing a three at the shot clock buzzer. Donarski followed with a trey of her own.

At this point the defense was just getting sliced up and Baylor answers everything the sisters offense does. Diew got caught out of position and picked up her third and Baylor took the lead 29-27. Kane immediately responded to tie it once again. Ryan regains the lead with an and one, but the team went cold again and Baylor got back in

After Ash misses a free throw after being beat to hell…a defensive breakdown gives Baylor the tying basket. At the half it’s 37-37.

Officials are “letting them play” which translates to Baylor is being very physical. Sisters are dominating the boards 28-14. Otherwise every stat is even like the score.

The third started with the game going back and forth with both squads playing tough D. After a nice two by Izzi Joens nailed a three and it’s 46-41. Breathing room? Not so fast…

A bad offensive sequence from Donarski led to a trey by Baylor and then Diew picks up her fourth but Baylor missed the and one. After four straight ISU possessions without a basket Baylor scored to retake the lead.

One ref not only missed a physical foul on Baylor but then missed a travel call on the ensuing possession. Folks..the officiating was frustrating at best.

Ryan started getting to the free throw line and pulled ISU back into the lead 50-49. Ryan got two more for a three point lead. After a tough basket by Joens it was 54-49 at the end of three.

The fourth started with an ISU foul and only one make by Baylor. This was followed by the worst call of the game. We get hammered driving and they call an offensive foul. Yes, Baylor was again erasing the lead.

After some contentious play Joens hit a three and then we got a stop. The crowd was insane at this point. Deafening. Then Baylor scored after a Joens turnover and got the and one. 59-56. After another Ryan turnover Baylor hit a three and it’s 61-59. Nailbiter!

After a miss Baylor ties it at 61 with 4 left. Leads just don’t last long in this one. But…then it happened…

Kane scored.

Joens for three

Joens for another three!

On the other end it was fantastic defense and dominating rebounding. Donarksi would close things out with a three at the shot clock buzzer

Final 74-63.

Observations

One key thing that really hurt the effort tonight were turnovers. Too many times we tried going inside and had the ball tipped away. We only had 14 but it seemed like each one was crucial.

But…when the motion was going the inside opened.

Rebounding was just dominating. 54-29

POG - Joens again. She was a warrior tonight. Not perfect, but what an impact. 30 points and 15 boards.

Fritz - got us a few points but her defense was stellar. 9 points and 10 boards.

Ryan - made a living at the line, but wow…has to take better care of the ball. 7-7 at the line. 15 points, 8 assists, 6 turnovers, and 6 boards.

Donarski - great D and just enough offense when it mattered.

Kane - some great inside points and she was a beast on the boards. 10 points and 10 boards.

Izzi- her minutes were huge. Never backed down. A couple of power baskets and boards.

Diew - never impacted the game except for her fouls. Still struggles on D.

M&M - put in some relief minutes. Won’t show up on the stat sheet, but she did a nice job in there.

Free throws - seemed like we shot more and we should have. 8-9 with Ryan hitting 7.
Well…the Baylor bugaboo has been vanquished. Their mystique has been shattered. Next up is an OU team we match up well with. The one difference from when we last played them is Aubrey Joens has been lighting things up of late. We need to carry tonight’s grit, defense and determination into the game to earn another trip to the finals. See you there!

FS: Saturday NCAAB Session (3/18) in Des Moines

I thought I would give this offer to Cyclone Fans before put out in the secondary market. A friend and I bought 5 tickets in section 116 Row G (mid-court, 10ish rows up) at Wells Fargo Arena we are going to the games on Thursday, but we have a fundraiser back in our hometown on Saturday and can't make those two games. Tickets are in the (I believe) Coors Light-club section and are a part of the NCAA Official Fan Experience and Watch Party package. I am waiting for those experience package details but will share when I get them.

We were hopeful maybe ISU would be there but are excited to take our boys to experience their first NCAA Tourney games. Hoping some Cyclone/College Hoops fans can do the same. Willing to split up into 2 and 3 if needed. But would like to sell all 5 together.

I have attached a screenshot of the package.

Just wanting to break even on what we paid.
