Why Your Town Sucks #3: Waukee

Waukee and Chariton in the same week is interesting. I find myself wanting to defend a place like Chariton because I feel sorry for them.

While I love living in my current city it is truly a bedroom community and has no history. I don't think anybody even knows how the city actually got its name.

As i remember from my waukee history class in like 5th grade, the railroad made them change it from Shirley to Waukee, and (iirc) they just wanted an indian sounding name for whatever reason.

I love the discussions these posts create! One of my favorite reads on this site long ago involved people ripping Woodward or Granger...I think it started from a post about kids throwing rocks off of bridges on the interstate in Des Moines...and it exploded! So many laughs that day...good read!

If you are going to do these, at least get your information correct.

City Hall is not in a strip mall, it has its own building.

Purdue Global is 100% online, so there is no longer a DSM Campus. The University of Phoenix has never had a campus in DSM. Lots of Waukee kids at Iowa State.

That is not a picture of Waukee High School, that is Waukee Stadium.

Athletics - 2020/2021 - 6 state team championships. 19 of 21 teams made the state tournament.
Not sure basketball is our best sport - Boys Golf 7 state titles, Girls Track 8 state titles, Girls Golf 4 state titles, Boys soccer 3 state titles, girls basketball 2 state titles, boys track 2 state titles, boys swimming 3 state titles, boys tennis 1 state title. softball 1 state title, girls bowling 1 state title, boys basketball 1 state title - all in the last 13 years.

Stivers Ford Lincoln is on the "Waukee Side of West Des Moines" not Shottenkirk Chevy.
Easy, dude. City hall IS a strip mall. It started as one portion of a multi-tennant building and swallowed up the rest over time. There's nothing worth defending there though.

There is a dentist off on the one end still. But to be fair, they are planning on building and moving to an actual municipal campus.

Enjoyed this one.

I need to submit a request for Postville, IA. Not very big, but very ethnically diverse. I think it would be a hit.

I know some people from Oelwein...from listening to their stories about Oelwein...I think it would be outstandingly funny! Although it might be too easy!?!

I am familiar with Oelwein, and you're right I wonder if maybe mtown is looking to avoid the super easy targets. Oelwein and Postville would certainly qualify as easy targets LOL

Good on the OP for not picking on as low-hanging fruit as the prior two.

I'm curious though, which cities make "the good list" or is that not the point? I'm a fairly pessimistic fellow, I can get on board with crapping on about anything.

What is great about it? And the traffic is by design. It's a feature, not a big.

We look forward to the brick or EIFS-paneled building surrounded by a parking lot. To improve appearance, there will be some public art out front.

It's great because it has a combination of old resturants, new chain stuff, new family owned stuff like Nicks Steak house, Kue'd and a few others. It also has some hold in the wall type bars like Kennys', Norms, the Kee. Also has some new sports bars type stuff. Has D1 training facility for indoor training for kids. Has Hiit workout joints and the Y. Car dealerships. The schools are great in Waukee. IT's close to Adel that has a few solid restaurant choices. They are going to build a massive entertainment complex. Business like Holms Murphy are starting to move out that way. There is a lot of good in Waukee. I live in Norwalk which is more small town than Waukee and probably why I hate the traffic out there.
