Why Your Town Sucks #3: Waukee

Lived in Waukee just before Coralville... what's next Ames? lol Seriously though, ignore the haters. I love these threads.

We had hoped to move to WDM and thought Waukee was too far west. It actually wasn't bad at all. Grand Prairie Parkway opening helped, we left before anything besides the road was built. Still think they should have just called it Alice's Road, but what do I know about branding.

Forget the IceCream, the best place in town that I miss is Fresh Mediterranean Express. Locally owned and delicious! Great, now I want a Gyro.

He had a rough transition out of the NFL, largely injury-related.
I don't think it's happened again. If I'm wrong, I'd rather not know.

I think the PEDs spelled trouble for his career as well. Started off great though, recovering an inside kick in his first ever game.

I like them and feel that we should invade Europe just to plunder all their roundabouts.

What is funny, in Europe I mostly notice them at huge intersections where they actual sped up traffic because you don't wait 500 years on a stop light. In the US we seem to only use them at small intersections as a means to slow down traffic.

They do both. No high speed through a green light, but no stopping for a red or stop sign either.

I moved to Waukee 5 years ago when you could still blow by Hy-Vee at 55mph, I drive "spirited" in general and even I thought that was starting to get a little nuts. Just in the last 5 years we've probably doubled the amount of stop lights it feels like.

Not sure if they still do it, but Waukee used to do a fun bus tour of the city as a networking event. I remember them talking about the different goals for Hickman. Cities generally want people to slow down hoping they'll stay and shop. DOT generally wants to keep traffic flowing as quickly as possible. Both care about safety. Hickman was the road he was talking about, that the DOT just wants to keep it moving and the cities keep wanting to add stoplights and slow it down.

I don't care what anyone thinks...these are funny as hell. Can't wait till he does Marshalltown!
Definitely has to bring up the bobcat sound they blast on the PA after scoring a touchdown. Fortunately, it would seem that chanse creekmur wore it out because it hasn't sounded much in the past decade

i submitted this when they were looking for a name for the new high school. Suggested to go with Miners to honor the history. Nope - instead paid some marketing firm some stupid $ to come up with the Northwest Wolves.

may least they aren’t the Jaguars. I’m sure there were some Wolves in that area at one point at least. Ankeny sucks again.

While it may be strip malls, dentist offices and car dealerships now - there is a bit of unique history to waukee having coal mines. Figured it’d be cool to recognize that.
While I love living in my current city it is truly a bedroom community and has no history. I don't think anybody even knows how the city actually got its name.

They use less fuel, they are safer so people don't get t-boned, and they are faster than a four-way stop. The only reason people don't like them is cuz they don't want to learn how to use them.

Also, we wedge them into spots where there isn't enough room. You have to be able to be IN the roundabout without blocking two entries at the same time. This makes it tougher for people to know when to yield or not and it feels more like a parking lot process.

Around CR there are a couple that are bigger and easier to navigate, better flow. And there are a few that are barely bigger than the 4-way stops they took out - those are always a goat ****.
