Why was Wayne Morgan fired?

Now you are just not making any sense. Do you think we are the only major college basketball team in the country? Seriously, we aren't the only team trying to get all of these recruits.

There are 100 top 100 guys every year... Thats ALOT of talent to spread around, especially if we want to be a consistent top 30 team...

That is AVERAGE recruiting in major college basketball... We SHOULD be pulling 1-3 top 100 guys EVERY YEAR and rarely sign guys out of the top 150.

Yeah because the only schools that pulled in 3 top 100 guys the past two years consecutively is...Florida. So I guess we should be recruiting just like Florida every year because we have a tradition just like Florida has. That class with Brackins was a top 30 class. It was maybe even a top 25 class. Still no results.

Florida has good recent history, I wouldn't say they have tradition. They were nothing before Lon Kruger (who we could have had)... I am not saying we should pull three every year, maybe once in a blue moon, but at least one every year.

Morgan was a desperation hire to keep Stinson and Blalock, without whom Morgan would have been gone in 2 years. His just rolled the ball out and said go play.

Morgan was a desperation hire, but not because of Stinson and Blaylock. After all, the job was offered to at least 2 or 3 other candidates, including Jeff Lebo -- who all turned it down -- before it was offered to Morgan.

Yeah and we just signed one with Chris Colvin. Yet I very highly doubt we'll be good next year despite the addition of Gilstrap who will be playing right away because McDermott will waste his talent away.

It was not a top 30 class. We signed guys like Boozer, Brister, Vette in that class. Not impressive at all

Yeah, he does that. Like he wasted Wesley Johnson's as a frosh, and Craig Brackins' this year. :jimlad:

The point is that he's gotten this talent and he hasn't put a team together. Yes, Brackins has improved a ton and Wesley did a great job right away. The point is that he brings in a lot of talent right away and can't put a winning team together.

I agree--I don't think McD has wasted any talent when it is here.

The problem is that there hasn't been appreciable talent here to use. If you think there is talent here, why is our record this poor?

I think McD's biggest mistake was not having a top notch D1 recruiter on staff. I think he can X and O with the best of 'em, but that's not what wins in big-time basketball.

Hope those 2 can ball next year...

You really have no idea what you're talking about. Despite three bad picks, we got three highly touted prospects (and I would consider Lucca a big prospect, he just didn't get much hype because he didn't make a big name for himself until late in his senior year). That's a very very good class.

Rick,

there is no way you can think he brinks in a lot of talent. You named 3 players earlier. You need at least 8 to be successful. We are starting a walk on and and playing 2 others. H

He hasn't brought in near enough talent for us to be good.

I haven't seen "alot of talent". Especially since some of it (Taylor and Johnson) was walking away as fast as more came in. Ever try to fill a cup with a hole in the bottom?

And Gilstrap appears to be the missing piece, so he'll hardly be "wasted talent".

The four best players we have brought in all had relationships with the staff before they were hired, through AAU or playing/knowing relatives... Soon, that well will dry up and it will be interesting to see what the staff can do just based on second hand connections and cold calling...

Again, you're wrong. You can't expect to bring in eight 5 star recruits before the "talent" is all there. You bring in a few big names (i.e. Brackins, Garrett, Staiger) and the others are solid contributors as mediocore recruiting status.

You mean, like the players Daniyel Ronisnson has begun bringing in? Beginning with Colvin? And which of thiose connections brought in Gilstrap? Or are you talking younger, like Wesley Staten?

Some people say that Morgan was the worst coach ever at ISU, wow. He had the best winning % of any coach at ISU in their first three years. I want more horrible coaching in Ames.

If we never get a 5 star player again that is fine with me. But man we are getting 3 star players that aren't that talented. We aren't beating out schools for some nice talent.

You are making it sound like GMAC is a great recruiter. He is not. He is an average recruiter at best right now, and the only thing that makes him average is Brackins. Take away CB and he is doing a very bad job recruiting. VERY BAD

Watch the teams from when he took over and until his last year. Tell me they didn't get worse. Tell me they didn't embarrass you more. They got in a fight every game. They were not disciplined. Lost to teams way less talented than us.

Morgan rode Homan's back until he was gone and than tanked. He was a horrible coach. Horrible.

Larry Eustachy would never let Morgan coach during practice. That is how much he thought of him as a coach. True story
