Which programs will be knocking on Mr. Rhoads door?

The real question is when are we going to lose Herman and who to?

I dunno about that, he has more to prove before he becomes a hot commodity. Unless there are some friends of his somewhere.

A better question is who will be chasing Wally? In my opinion he has done the most with the least this year.

A good problem to have I think!

I believe Wally said this will be his last coaching stop. Whether you believe that or not, thats what he said. I believe it, since he can coach along side his son and he is getting close to retirement. I think after a few more years at ISU, he will hang it up all together.

I'm sure Chizik would agree. As for the people who make statements like he is more likely to get a pick slip, you obviously haven't looked at the numbers between last year and this year, despite having allot of injuries. You may also notice that we haven't had the bone head calling like we have had in the past.

Wildcat formation 4th and short vs. A&M?

I agree that he's doing fine, but to start talking about where he's going is premature IMO.

you guys are like high schoolers falling in love the first time and all thinking about marriage by your second date. He's great but lets not pencil the guy in for lifetime contracts just yet. It will just set you up to A) look stupid if he doesn't succeed, or B) really hurt when he Cael Sandersons you. 6 win seasons will buy him 8-10 years like McCarney and then he better have put up something significant or fans will rightfully get restless and choose to roll the dice again.

I think this is spot-on, it'll take a couple years of success for him to garner interest from other schools or around a decade of hovering around mediocrity before he leaves. How the next two years play out with the difficult schedule will be very telling...

I really don't see CPR leaving for another school, he seems like a homebody that is proud to be an Iowan and will have us on the map before moving on, not because it's his job, but because he is a Cyclone and wants it as bad as the fans want it. Even once we are on the map, i don't see him leaving.

If one of the top 20 or so football schools came calling one day, I'm sure CPR would listen. So many recruiting challenges here, year after year.
I'd even bet if Pitt asked him to return as HC, he'd consider it. He loved it there, and there are so many elite players right in PA.

Here's the factors at play as I see them:

1. He's obviously going to get some people contacting him. That's a given with any successful coach.

2. He's made it clear in his speeches and interviews that, not only is ISU a dream come true for him, he also appreciates deeply the opportunity that he was given.

3. While budgets are tight all over, he is currently paid well under what Chizik received, so there is surely room to compensate him fairly.

And we are ready for another round of Cyclone fan codependency. I hope PR stays as long as he is successful, but I fully believe anyone can be hired away if the situation is right and I don't understand ISU fans' need to have lifer coaches as head coaches. Even great coaches occasionally need to move on just to breath new life into stale programs.

I hate to bring this up. I know I am going to stir up the Dan Fans for life, and that is not my purpose.

Why would it hurt to have some continuity?? Dan McCarney in all honesty probably should still be here. I hate to say that. I think he had to go, but for reasons not related directly to football. The decision to let him go was because we lost faith in him and people didn't want to spend money if there wasn't a change. It was a financial decision more then overall performance issue. Truth is he brought us close to 2 conference titles, which we would of won if we had a kicker.

Dan did a great job at ISU once things got going... Yes he did have a couple years in which we laid eggs. Who says he wouldn't of turned things around if given another year??? We never know now... Just look at Iowa. People wanted Kirk gone going into last year because of 3 mediocre years. If they did that, they wouldn't be where they are now again.

If CPR has success the next few years, then why wouldn't we want him here for a while?? ISU isn't exactly an easy place to coach. Look at the coaches that came in and fell flat on their faces. It takes someone that knows Iowa, knows the culture of the fanbase, knows it's not going to be easy. Danny Mac was an Iowa native, CPR is an Iowa native. I think that is something to take into consideration.

I don't see CPR wanting to move on to another job. He grew up down the road, he coached once before here, and he reached out to ISU for this job after Cheezit left.

In all honesty, I think GMac, if he can prove past this year that he is a winner... Sign him up even longer then his 2015 contract. It would be nice to see our programs being stable and not in such constant change.

The factors that may be at play some day as I see them (because NO ONE is going to hire away our 1st year head coach...except maybe Auburn):

1. One of toughest recruiting jobs in all of BCS conference college football.

2. Extremely tough to get more than 7 wins. Even Saban could struggle here.

3. One of smallest budgets in BCS conference college football.

4. We've proved that mediocrity will only get you so many renewals so he will have to have sustained success. Not easy at ISU.

5. He may well indeed love ISU but he also would probably love a high paying, high visability job with a school with gobs of facilities, 100,000 fans that show up no matter what needs combined or that its cold, and a school and program that sell itself.

Actually, ESPNu. They have a Big XII show on now and will be having a segment on coach Rhoads soon.

Does anyone else think this kind of thread is a little premature?

Rhoads has had great year and is undoubtedly worthy of all the praise he receives. However, there is still the possibility he ends up 6-6 in the regular season and who knows how we play in a bowl. Next year is going to be a grind and we could realistically end up with 4 or 5 wins. Is he that hot of a commodity at that point?

Where does he go that's going to be an upgrade from Iowa State? Let's be honest...openings at more prestigious programs are going to command more proven head coaches or the hot coach of the moment.

If college football has taught us anything, it's that the coach merry-go-round makes no sense. Chizik sucks for two years and lands at Auburn. ND gives Weis everything short of a lifetime contract after a 7 games with the highlight being a close loss to USC and good coaches all over the country remain ignored for years.

So that being said, who knows what happens to Rhoads. here's to hoping he stays here for a while...

here's to hoping he's successful. Iowa State is bigger than any one coach and my loyalties are to ISU.

Ya he is here till he is done coaching, might get some entertaining offers, but Pollard screwed up once he won't do it again, he will throw the $$ when need be. Ferentz and Rhoads have it made in the shade.
Who did he screw up with?

random:

buffalo sucks this year... is god himself turner gill still there? people were so high on him after one year they were good. in fact, most of their wins were hairline wins, so take back 3-4 of those breaks and they would have been a losing team last year too....
