wbb elite camp,should be interesting!!

Get serious with this. We are perennially in the top 5 in attendance for WBB and are a fixture in the NCAA tourney. That's the definition of big dog. Ask UConn, Duke, Tennessee, if ISU is a big dog in women's basketball.

Somehow, I don't think Geno and Pat lose much sleep that they will lose a top recruit to Iowa State unless that player is from Iowa.

A little factoid on the Big 12

ISU's women have won more games in the Big 12 tournament than any other WBB team. OU is close and I was worried before last season that they would beable to catch us this year. As it turned out actually gained two games on them last year, and matched them this season.

Attendance is big, but to put ISU in those teams class level is ridiculous. To be a big dog and be in the same class as them ISU needs to make a final four appearance at the very least.

Bite your tongue! We are a big dog now.

I agree and I know that UConn knows who we are and, even though they may not be scared to play us, they would be nervous. All of the other WBB teams respect ISU WBB and Fennelly's ability to design a game plan. We may not be the biggest dog but there are more than three big dogs in WBB and I think we are one of them.

Being a big dog entitles wins, consistent elite eight & final four appearances, and NC's! Top 5 in attendance is nice, and shows are fans are big dogs when it comes to supporting our team, but not big dogs compared to UConn, Duke, Tennessee.

Big Dogs come in all sizes and from all over the country. How often do you here the other schools trying to explain why kids don't want to play for them...Womens basketball at ISU is on the rise and thats the only way to think..please no more excuses about geography,snow,facilities..come on you guy's with the right additions to this team, some good luck and no more than 2 yrs we all are buying tickets in april to the final 4...when you got the Big Dogs (u-conn,duke,tenn.,maryland)shopping in your back yard wake up and grab it ,the time is now

I don't think the coaching staff makes excuses. I think they've been doing well in trying to sell the program. But you have to admit that the factors you mentioned (geography, snow, facilities) sometimes didn't give us advantage because those factors were viewed negatively by recruits / prospects. Remember that everyone has different preferences: not everyone prefers Ames to let's say Minneapolis and vice versa.
But I agree that we need to use the momentum and hopefully we won't have to wait 10 years to go to another Elite 8.

with the recruiting that baylor has done this year, they will be the big dog in the big 12 conferecefor t5he next few years.

Tenn,U-Conn,etc. are mostly womens BB programs.Over the last few years ISU's success has been around women's programs(for the most part). With the name recognition that has come with coach Fenns. success and the Big 12 conference rankings i believe our program can help in recruiting all the Sports not just one of them.hope that helps explain my earlier post(no more excuses).nothing about coaches even mentioned.

The bottom line is that with 15 scholarships it's very difficult for programs like ISU to rise from where they are at now (perenial top 25, with an occasional run into the top 10) to the perenial top 5 or top 10 with consistent final 8s or final 4s. Due to title IX though they will never cut back the 15 schollies in wbb. By doing that it talent that is now sitting on someone else's bench would trickle down quite a bit. That would help the parity and frankly that would maybe help their tournament to get some of the mystique of the men's tourney. More upsets better television. as nice as it is to see an undefeated team competition makes for better television which makes for better money which would allow for better facilities, more plane travel (less bustime, more class time) etc. So in a way in an effort to increase "participation" opportunities they are actually hurting the quality of the opportunity for those kids in the game now. wait that's a little off topic but to me it's at the root of why it's hard for us to climb into that next tier.

The original "big dog" reference in this thread related to recruiting. I say we're a big dog -- though not the biggest, certainly. However, if we go after a top recruit and, say, Tennessee goes after the same recruit -- we're "big" enough to stay in contention for that recruit. Unlike men's BB -- where we need a serious "inside track" (HB) to contend with Duke, Kansas, UNC.

And so, by the power vested in me by myself (and what's logical to me), I so declare ISU to be a "Big Dog" in women's BB.

On the topic of 15 scholarships..when you look at the number of girls that are in high school compared to boys....the number of sports available to girls is much less due to the size of just one football team(my favorite). Now we have legitimate summer programs in Iowa to help these kids improve and compete. Our football rosters have kids from all over the country so can our wbb team..don't you think!! imagine being from the city and getting the chance to play for ISU...come on dream a little ...it's gonna happen

Okay, I know we beat this to death, but when ISU lands an McDonald's All-American, we can talk. But, your argument would still be off, because TN, UCONN, NC, Rutgers, Standford, has multiples in each class, every year, like clock-work, and will stay that way until title 19 goes away. Although some "stars" are starting to see that there are some of their peers who are bench warmers, and have to be cautious to find the right fit for them.

AGain, ISU WBB is my favorite sport, and part of the joy of watching and supporting this team is that they are not divas, they are hard working ladies who play as a team and are class-act ladies. A star here and there, Prins, possibly Aus, is good for the mix, but I will say it again, until TN puts ISU on their non-conference schedule, we are not a big dog. And that my friends, can be a good thing.

We have no where to go but up, and more and more, young girls are seeing the Big 12 as top in attendance and support. That is only gonna help, that along with Baylor getting a national title in the next couple years.
