*****The Super, Mega, Huge Big 12 Expansion Thread*****

First time I've ever checked out this thread. All I could say was wow. Almost 1300 pages? That's awesome. Clonefan, I bet you're enjoying the credits.

But once WVU is officially settled into its new league, there’s still some questions as to what the landscape of the conference will look like – the league is expected to look at the possibility at further expansion or decide to stay at 10 teams for the time being. For Luck, the decision is clear to him.

“Being a conference with only 10 puts you really behind the eight-ball. I would think that there is some strength in numbers and that it would be wise, not necessarily immediately, but over a course of a number of years to get to 12 and maybe even beyond that,†he said. “You have to see what your competition is doing, what your neighbors are doing and see that you don’t miss out on creating a stable conference.â€

Something he says the Big East failed to do after Virginia Tech, Miami and Boston College all left for the ACC.

“The Big East replaced those schools, but we still stayed at eight and I think that was a mistake because it’s not a number that really gives you enough cushion quite honestly – and I would say the same about 10 in today’s world of college athletics,†he said.

Luck was a guest Tuesday evening on the MetroNews Statewide Sportsline.

I'd invite Louisville,Clemson,FSU, and toss a coin on 14 Miami or Georgia Tech

East

ISU
KSU
Louisville
FSU
WVU
Clemson
Miami/ G.Tech

West

OU
Texas
OSU
Tech
Kansas
Baylor
TCU
I'd say for Miami and GT the main thing to think about is recruiting. Neither are probably big TV draws as the have bigger programs in state. Adding Miami would give you another Florida school. Georgia Tech would put you in Georgia which I remember reading the state of Georgia produces the most NFL talent. IMO, you go with Miami. Then you are the only conference with multiple schools in 2 of the 3 largest Division 1 player producing states.

Here's an example of a possible B12 with 16 teams:

* Primary protected rival: Play every year, rotating home-and-home.
* Secondary protected rival: Play 2 out of 3 years, rotating home-and-home.
* 8 Conference games per year; 4 OOC games per year.
* Divisions change every year.

Year 1:
Pod 1 & Pod 2 = Division A
Pod 3 & Pod 4 = Division B

Year 2:
Pod 1 & Pod 3 = Division A
Pod 2 & Pod 4 = Division B

Year 3:
Pod 1 & Pod 4 = Division A
Pod 2 & Pod 3 = Division B

Year 4: Cycle repeats (reverse home-and-home)

Northeast Pod 1:
Notre Dame (Texas; Georgia Tech)
Rutgers (Kansas State; Oklahoma State)
West Virginia (Iowa State; Clemson)
Maryland (Florida State; Texas Tech)

Southeast Pod 2:
Florida State (Maryland; Texas)
Clemson (Texas Tech; West Virginia)
Georgia Tech (Oklahoma; Notre Dame)
Baylor (Texas Christian; Kansas)

Northwest Pod 3:
Iowa State (West Virginia; Texas Christian)
Kansas (Oklahoma State; Baylor)
Kansas State (Rutgers; Oklahoma)
Texas Tech (Clemson; Maryland)

Southwest Pod 4:
Texas (Notre Dame; Florida State)
Oklahoma (Georgia Tech; Kansas State)
Oklahoma State (Kansas; Rutgers)
Texas Christian (Baylor; Iowa State)

Currently, ND and GT seem very doubtful, with FSU and Maryland unlikely. Clemson may or may not have reasonable interest, along with Louisville, Rutgers, and BYU.

At any rate, a main point is to demonstrate the flexibility and cohesion of a 16-team league, creatively configured.

This particular B12 configuration would likely command at least $35M per school per year, possibly more, plus Tier 3 on top of that. Doesn't ISU make $2M+ in Tier 3 revenue per year?

This league is also ripe for an "SEC challenge" week, if the two leagues had any interest in that.

Seeing how this thing pops up every couple of days, figured I would help feed it and get it to 20K so we can put it away.

Nothing to say here.

Wouldn't the Primary and Secondary have to be from different pods? For example, when FSU's pod is playing OU/UT pod, they'd only have 7 conference games.

Also, would the conference championship be a four team or a two team playoff?

You have rotating divisions, so one could expect the championship to be the lead dogs from each of the two pod cpmbination you happen to be grouped with each year. Way better system than the old North and South, imo. Everyone gets spread around the conference over a three year period.

Secondary rivals could not be from same pod as primary rival. I agree. OP probably just missed on that, mathematically it should work out.

You guys are correct. Primary and secondary rivals must be from different pods. My bad.

I switched a few around, and now all the teams "fit" (I think). Of course, there are numerous potential permutations -- the above is only one example.

The championship game must be 2-team under current rules. If the rules change, then you're set up for 4-teams.

While Clemson, FSU, and Maryland may have "some" interest in the B12, it appears that GT has zero interest as of this update, and, of course, ND is probably a pipe-dream.
