The Fran fade

Anyone see the technical Bobo earned himself last night? Total flop while shooting a 3, trying to draw the foul on a fast closing defender. Then decided to yell at the refs for not calling a foul.

Francon teaches his pupils to yell the word foul and question every foul call. Bobo trying to keep up with Connor.

I will say, Iowa is doing exactly what they should be doing against these weak teams on their schedule, just beating the crap out of them. They would have lost to one of these teams in year's past and I think they get at least 1 of the next 2.

I'll be curious to see how they do in the tourney and how the tourney is called - If it's called like the Big 12 is this year, they are probably 1-1 again. If it's called tighter, I'm saying it now Fran finally gets over the hump and makes the S16.

So I was running simulations on the Big 12 and Big 10 tournaments to see where both teams will likely end up.

If Iowa State goes 1-1 or 2-0 and TCU doesn’t beat Kansas (they play two times back to back due to COVID), Iowa State will get the 5 seed and play Texas 1st round. If TCU wins once against KU or Iowa State goes 0-2, Iowa State will get the 6 seed and play Tech.

If Iowa goes 1-1 by beating Michigan, they’re going to get the 5 seed and will play either Michigan State or Ohio State in the Quarterfinals (assuming they beat Minny / Maryland / Northwestern). If Iowa goes 1-1 but that win is against Illinois, same scenario applies but they’d face Illinois in the Quarterfinals. If Iowa goes 2-0 AND OSU loses once more, Iowa will get the 4 seed and play either MSU or OSU in the Quarterfinals. If OSU wins out though, Iowa will still get the 5 seed and then play Illinois in the Quarterfinals should they take care of the 12/13 seed.

If Iowa goes 0-2, Iowa will play Indiana in the 8/9 game and if they win they’d play essentially the winner of tonight’s game between Wisconsin & Purdue.

A lot to still be decided in the B1G.

I'm actually surprised that Hunter is shooting such a low percentage from three. I thought he was going to be better there. Do ISU fans think it is just a freshman thing and think he will improve a lot next year, or is he just a poor three point shooter?
If you look at the numbers you can already see improvement.

Before the conference season he shot 9/44 for .200.
The first half of the conf. season (including Missouri) he was 8/32 for .250.
After Missouri he has been 8/25 for .320.

The kid is a true freshman so I don't think a comparison to an upperclassman is a fair comparison.

They have a few what I would call bad losses this year. Penn State, Michigan, and Rutgers. All games they should've won, only difference this year is only 1 of them was in February.

Otherwise yes, they have fed off of weak opposition. Same as what they do every Nov-Dec in their non con. Their Big 10 wins aside from Ohio State and Michigan State are against the bottom feeders. Michigan State for whatever reason had been reeling too when they came into Iowa City last week. They came out their next game and beat Purdue, so maybe that ass-whooping Iowa gave them is what they needed to dig their heads out.

I guess I'm just not that impressed. What they do can look gaudy and impressive, but not when you really put it under a microscope. It's kind of like putting lipstick on a pig.

This is really their whole deal- eight of their eleven Big 10 wins are against teams that are a combined 25-65 in league play (Nebraska 2x, Penn State, Maryland 2x, Minnesota 2x, and Northwestern. Unbelievable how bad the bottom third of that league is. But Hawk fans and media look the other way on this fact and just float about being 7-1 in February, blah blah blah. And then they wonder why they haven’t made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA’s in 22 years.

It's becoming abundantly clear that fans and media completely ignore quality of opponent when determining which way a team is trending. Iowa beats up on some crap teams and they're playing "great". Clones win four in a row against the bottom of the league and they're trending up. These things need context... not black and white with Ws and Ls.

Iowa St has turned it around against the latter half of the conference, true. But tons of metrics and ranking systems out there tell the story that one thing is not like the other. In other words, the bottom half of the Big 10 is much worse than the latter half of the Big 12. I know it's like putting lipstick on a pig so to speak, but Iowa State was certainly trending down and even at the bottom of the heap at one point. They're not anymore. Iowa is just stacking cheap wins on top of mediocrity.

Doesn't matter how things are called if a team can defend their guards and has a solid post game they will be toast. Period.

This. Anyone that thinks...whoa...NOW they are in sync and scary. Just stop. Look at last year...they went on a winning streak at the end of the year just like this, beating below average teams, and even beating Michigan State ON THE ROAD by 30. Are they bad? No. Are they good? Yes. Can they make a run? Sure...but so can many teams. Their guards are gonna be exploited in the tourney.

It's truly hard to know how good the Hoks really are when they play in a conference full of pillow fights. The bottom half of the B1G is truly dreadful.

Penn State and Rutgers are still Q2 losses, that's fine. Michigan is a Q1 loss, that's fine, and they are almost top 30. That's a good team even if the record doesn't totally reflect it.

Agreed, the games we were losing weren't bad losses in and of themselves, but in several of them we were uncompetitive and it was straight up bad basketball. We're playing better now regardless of opponent and kudos to the staff and players.

No, I've felt this way for a while. I think they have the tools to do some good things. They could also play a team like Auburn or TT in the second round and just get absolutely drilled too. I think this team is even better equipped than last season, I think Murray is that special.

Iowa has blown out a lot of bad teams out and have hung enough with some good teams for it to not be a blowout. No Iowa fan thinks they are this super great team. They have been a lot better than was expected after losing Garza, Wieskamp, Fredrick and Nunge. Feels great to just make the tournament.
