Two of the worst quarterbacks in the league?! Wow. I would take both over anything Texas and KU put out there. Nick Florence will be a gigantic drop off from RGIII and we have seen him first hand in the past. Also who is going to start for Okie State? This is not the quarterback league it was last year. If Landry Jones is the best in the league, thats not saying much. The kid from WV is better than him.
Steele is the better QB right now, and he needs to win the starting spot. Barnett is a good kid and I love what he can do at the QB position, but he is in a tough position with Richardson playing much better than him. In my opinion Barnett's interceptions were a lot worse than Steeles, Steele forced one into a crossing route like Brett Farve would try to do and it was ugly but, Barnett landed his right in Kleins arms while he was floating the middle of the field the entire time and that was a dumb play, any LB would have made that play. Barnett also took off too much, he is quick and can get away with those but we cannot and will not continue to count on that. Steele needs to make better decisions when he is under pressure but he is still fun to watch when he gets flushed, If the QBs weren't down on one touch, Steele would have had a tremendous game. O line looks bad, really bad. The best surprise of the spring is Sam Richardson, and no one should be upset about that at all.
Steele has more potential this year if he can play smart, and he is definitely on his way there. I know people are gonna wanna argue about it and not agree, but Barnett is not the answer and quite frankly if he was I would be worried, Richardson will win that next year, and it doesn't hurt to have a solid and proven back up QB, but this year I have a feeling we will see a lot of 2 guys. Rhoads will not be slow to throw Steele on the bench in favor of a spark in the instance of bad decisions this year, but in my opinion we have the most potential this year with a healthy Steele Jantz in the backfield, especially when you add Aaron Horne and Albert Gary, and
Jantz to Tiller, get use to it.

The running game was very effective against Iowa and Baylor, so I think Jantz CAN make it go.
I agree that it was better with JB. Like I said, he runs the zone read better. But we only saw a few weeks of healthy Jantz, and he was still learning the zone. If he can improve his reads, he can be just as effective.
Regarding the sacks, I wouldn't really count many of those against either guy. They were "down" when someone touched them. We know that in a game situation, they aren't going to be ruled down because someone touches them. Jantz's 30 yard sack would have likely been a thrown away ball in real life. Richardson got legitimately sacked a couple times, but I think that Barnett and Jantz both would have gotten out of about all of those "sacks".
I realize Rhoads said after the game that we played about as vanilla as we can because he couldn't trust who was in the stands watching, which makes sense. BUT... these things really troubled me about yesterday....
1. The OL HAS to be the most overrated position on the team. It was last year too IMO. Bleil and Rhoads always have nothing but great things to say about the OL last year and this year. But last year they were nothing special at all, and yesterday they were just plain awful. And don't tell me that our DL is just that good either because most Big 12 teams we will play will have better one's probably.
2. Still didn't see hardly any open WR's all day long. That has been an issue here for a long time, and it didn't look any better yesterday.
3. QB's, besides Richardson, still look like they'd rather run the ball than pass the ball. They get back in the pocket, look at their first read and if it's not there then they take off. Some of that had to do with how terrible the OL was though too.
4. Still not much running game to speak of. Another OL issue most likely, but that HAS to improve as well.
I think defensively we can be pretty decent. DL looked pretty solid, and Klein, George, and Knott will be the best LB's in the Big 12 as a group IMO. And we really have some promising young DB's in Sam Richardson, Stokes, and Mutcherson.... as well as guys like Givens, Washington, Brackens, Watsen, etc.... that group looks pretty good IMO.
We are only going to be as good as our offense goes though IMO. We MUST put points on the board in the Big 12. I'm concerned about the QB position and OL right now big time.
Richardson could win this job folks... but if he does... what do we do with the offensive gameplan? Is he going to be good enough with the zone read type offense when he seems like more of a pro-style QB? I guess he ran our type of offense in high school if you go back and look at his HS highlights though, so he should be ok.
Hard to tell anything from this practice for QB or OL. By nature you are going to only see the grind it out type plays. For guys like clonedude, do we really want to see our Offense successfully grind it out on our Defense (when they know what is coming)? Stats are meaningless, and given what we know about our QB's and offense, playing touch football does them no favors.

There will never be much separation and I expect CPR will use a rotation the entire year. Steele is going to force it too much and JB is limited at passing. I think we have to do what we did a year ago- start Steele and hope that more reps will improve his decision making/reads. Richardson looked okay fundamentally, but is clearly still adjusting to what to do when pressured.
My major complaint is that the offense still is fundamentally limiting what is already a limited group. I am going to just hope it is due to the closed-door spring game mindset.

It has to be tough to be the OC of these QB's. Our offense kinda depends on opening it up and using the entire field to spread the defense out. However, it seems that when our QB's "open" it up.... they commit costly turnovers. So then you reign them back in a bit... but then we become too conservative and we can't move the ball succesfully.
Jantz is the kind of guy that would love to throw it all over the place and just let it go... but he's shown that he can't take care of the ball when he does that. But if you drill into his head to not turn the ball over, he becomes too conservative and afraid to let it go... and looks paralyzed.
AA, JB,and SJ must be very slow in the mental aspects of the game...
Chicken or the egg? The passing game maximizes limits the QBs as much (more) as the QBs force us to limit our offense.
It may not be the best choice to compact the field when you have QB's that are not very accurate, struggle with reads, and are best at running the ball.
The running game woes are expected. Arobs senior year spring game he had like 10 carries for 5 yards iirc.
With Steele Kantz at QB I can almost guarantee you that its gonna be a long year of offensively inept football....

How can you say that? JB looked the worst of the 3 yesterday in most people's eyes... and I think JB might agree with that too.
I was hoping to see a much improved JB yesterday, but I didn't. Of course, it was just one game, but he looked pretty much the same IMO. Same for SJ... some good plays, but some boneheaded ones too. 13+ play drives don't mean jack squat if we turn it over at the end of them. We did that quite a bit last year. JB would drive us down the field and then fumble.... or SJ would drive us down the field and throw an INT. Those are useless drives. Rhoads bragged about the long drives yesterday, but once again our top 2 QB's couldn't convert any of them into TD's. That's troublesome.
I'd take that guarantee! I was at the freakin' game yesterday--so, what are you going to put up on it? I say you should give me four tickets to WVU....

I must have missed the "great things" that you refer to. But then, I listen very closely to what CPR says--and have noticed that he is very specific in what he says. For example, the only depth he had at the end of the year in his first season was a fifth year walkon.
Both last spring and this, CPR has clearly said merely that depth is better each year than it was the last. Indeed, last year the offensive line went eight deep (out of sheer necessity), and I'd guess that this year it will wind up going at least nine deep. So nothing he has said is untrue--unless you read any more into it.
Of course, Ill also point out that third year starter Brayden Burris was among the injured that missed the game, and that had to have some impact.
Back on topic, I'm not going to say "always" anything about any quarterback. I'm not going to say that Steele will "always" do something, or Barnett. It's clear that both have grown. I think that either can be a good QB, most especially under the right circumstances.
I also like how Richardson looked--but am not sure if he'll be ready for Prime Time before next ('13) season. Then he'll be contending with both Barnett and Rohach. That'll be fun to watch as well.
