Some Jon Rothstein tweets from ISU practice

Obviously this is true, but I get where he's coming from. There were a lot of times were ISU needed something to happen and Kane would just bull his way to either a bucket or free throws.

That is true and a good point. Not so much the "closer", but the "instigator". Who makes something happen when the team hits a lull or a funk (during a game). Obviously Niang is the first answer, but teams will try really hard to take him away. BDJ is who I think needs to play this role, although Hogue will have something to say as well - he certainly has the bulldog mentality.

He calls McKay a legitimate rim protector, and then compares him to DeMarre Carroll, who had a career Block percentage of less than 2.0%. Georges Niang and Marcus Smart - neither of whom are anything close to a rim protector - both had a higher block rate last year than Carroll's career rate.

That's just a dumb and lazy comparison. He wrote down the first tall black guy with dreadlocks he could think of.

There is more to rim protection than blocks.

And it would make me so happy if we saw a little Thug Life in Matt this season.

Expect it from Naz. Some of those late tournament games we started seeing him take it inside a bit more. He's got similar height and mass to Kane, just not as quick a step or handle. If he's been working on those as much as his shooting this off season it could be a game changer.

Love Rothstein. He is very pro ISU and to Hoiberg. Great exposure for the team.

Yes, he is pro ISU. But, then again, Rothstein is pro everyone. Everyone he tweets about is going to be good. Think of him more like everyone's cheerleader than anything else.

I agree, our high school coach always said that a block is one of the more selfish plays/stats to look at. If you've got a guy that is only trying to block shots then he is most likely not playing that great of defense overall.

I'll give him some time. It took Scotty some time to become Thuglife. Matt is still just a true sophomore...give him time.

The next time that Fred goes in back to back seasons without changing the offense will be the first time. Fred doesn't have a system in which he fits players, he builds a system that fits the players he has.

I agree my post was made in jest though

Agreed. It's also not the first time I've seen that comparison. If you want to go with tall black guy with dreadlocks, Kenneth Faried is a much better comparison.

I've never seen the Abdel Nader - Nicholas Batum comp before. That's quite interesting, I'm not sure what to make of that. I have absolutely no clue what to expect from Nader this year, or how he fits into the team. Its' the biggest mystery for me.

I think once Big 12 play starts he's going to be our swiss army knife off the bench. I just can't see him beating out Hogue for the starter spot and McKay makes too much sense paired up with Niang. Nader's much-hyped versatility though would be a great asset for him as a 6th/7th man though.
