Some Jon Rothstein tweets from ISU practice

Fred's adjusted his offense every season since he's been in Ames. He's great at adjusting to the guys he has. Can't wait to see how he utilizes everybody. Kind of wondering if he'll do some kind of rotation where he only plays 8 or 9 guys, but whoever 8 or 9 are vary game to game based on match-up and whoever has the hot hand. It works in the NBA, but idk if it will work at the college level. Fred's a genius, he'll figure it out.

I am starting to get concerned I have had an erection for longer than 4 hours, I think I need to see a doctor, or just get off CF.

I agree, our high school coach always said that a block is one of the more selfish plays/stats to look at. If you've got a guy that is only trying to block shots then he is most likely not playing that great of defense overall.

Did your HS have a bunch of short white guys from central Iowa?

:plaugh:... semi joking

I heard he took cues from Wisconsin and is planning to slow the game down

That is true and a good point. Not so much the "closer", but the "instigator". Who makes something happen when the team hits a lull or a funk (during a game). Obviously Niang is the first answer, but teams will try really hard to take him away. BDJ is who I think needs to play this role, although Hogue will have something to say as well - he certainly has the bulldog mentality.

I really think that's all he was getting at. Obviously Niang is capable of playing out of his mind to close out games and Naz has ice water in his veins. But Kane added a very different and valuable dimension in crunch time and we don't know for sure who is filling up that role or covering for it in other ways.

He was good until the last tweet. That is just factually incorrect. Niang was the closer, until he was hurt and Kane stepped up against UNC.

I love Kane and everything he did for ISU, but I didn't want to see him with in his hands at the end of game. I know it only happened a couple of times last year, but it was frustrating watching Kane dribble at the top of the key just to throw up a bad shot at the end of games.

Like that horrible shot against UNC, he lost us the game!

If not Niang or Naz, it should be BDJ. He can shoot, create his own shot, and drive to the rim.

At the end of the half or at the end of the game. He usually took a bad, long jumper. I'd like to think he learned from it when he took it to the hole against UNC.

Not to derail, but does anyone still watch The League? Last night's episode...the scene with Kevin in his 'sex pants' with Ruxin's wife in the flower shop...I almost ****** my pants. For some reason, I thought of that when I read this post.

Carry on.

This. Everyone seems to remember just the UNC game and fail to forget pretty much end of every first half of the season where it dribbled it around at the top of the key for 20 seconds, not looking for a pass, then jacked up a three that he missed 100 percent of the time. I love what he did for us and that UNC play was huge, but he did this almost every game and it drove me nuts.

Yep, pretty damn funny.

He calls McKay a legitimate rim protector, and then compares him to DeMarre Carroll, who had a career Block percentage of less than 2.0%. Georges Niang and Marcus Smart - neither of whom are anything close to a rim protector - both had a higher block rate last year than Carroll's career rate.

That's just a dumb and lazy comparison. He wrote down the first tall black guy with dreadlocks he could think of.

I'm guessing he was comparing him to Demare Carroll from a size and offensive ability standpoint. If he is as good as Carroll offensively, look out.

I remember getting snipped at in one thread a few months ago for saying that DeAndre wasn't "the closer" for the team. Yes, the UNC bull rush was awesome, but I remember so many of those games with you at the end of halves where he did exactly that--dribble out the play clock at the top of the key, jack a long, contested three, clang, not leave enough time for any rebounds or secondary activity (but not enough for the other team to take it the other way), and that's the half or the game. It was awful.

End of games last year, if I have one play, it's...
1. give it to Niang, or let him bring it up do and do Niang things in either finding a shot no defender saw, a pass nobody saw but the shooter/after it is up, Kane/Ejim/Hogue crash boards and try to get a put-back or a secondary
2. set play for Naz to take a three/same deal with the board crashing
3. DeAndre drive, a la UNC, to either draw a foul or make the shot

The main reason #3 is #3 is because it often turned into the sections above, which were suboptimal to say the least.

Notice that 2/3 of that is still available for next year, though? Plus more/better/more experienced shooters, a leaner Niang, and BDJ, who might be able to do #3 with more efficiency, and/or Nader, who might be able to do the same and has the same sort of shiftiness? You'll have Hogue and McKay to crash boards, whatever happens, to see if they can pull a putback or win a quick scrum/kickout right afterward? All sorts of options... we'll be fine...
