Release: ISU Signs Oregon Big Man

He will backup Dendy and see quality minutes. If he comes to ISU in June he will have plenty of time to put on weight and build a few muscles. I hope Greg has looked into recruiting the big kid from South Dakota that backed out of his commitment to Iowa. Jordan could some other big bodies around him.

Not here to bash the kid, since I've already said he has size and potential, but really? just because you heard McD say he may have a perimeter shot. and despite reports to the contrary, and it not being on his scouting report, you are ready to believe that he can make 3s?

I got some Hurricane insurance to sell you for your home in Omaha if so...

bc if we have learned anything, it's that McD is excellent at developing and keeping players around to see their full potential.

everything else mcdermott says about him seems consistent with the consensus about his abilities so yeah I believe him

How many big men do you see High School coaches letting shoot the 3. If you have one good post you want them in around the basket not out at the three point line. You have other midgets to do that.

Exactly. Plenty of high school coaches preach that stuff to centers. I'm sure he was the biggest guy on the team, they probably wanted him establishing position in the post not hanging out around the perimeter.

Then wouldn't that be why he didn't get any playing time last season. I have seen him play several times and he may not have the skills of Colvin but he will get more mileage out of his talent than Colvin will and be a team player for ISU.

I'm confused by the statement that scout.com has him at the 3rd best big man on the west coast.

He is ranked as a 2* recruit on scout. I can find 10+ power forwards or centers from the west coast that they have ranked as 4* or 5*. By comparison scout ranks Jordan Dykstra as a 3*.

Jordan's other stats........

47 per cent field goal shooting
71 per cent free throw shooting
1.1 assists per game
4.6 blocks per game (97 total) Best in class 6A
7.7 rebounds per game
0.7 steals per game
36 total turnovers
55 personal fouls
I believe he played in 21 games total.

I could be wrong but I think they updated their position rankings but not star rankings?!?!

well McD must have seen something in the shootarounds they had together because otherwise why would he be so high on his 'versatility'

Yeah, I'm not sure where they get that either. Honestly, I don't think he is even the 3rd best "big man" in Portland. No offense to him.......just being honest. Think that is a little too much hype.

Alright, I'll play along. So every big guy who can shoot 3s... i.e. Dirk Nowitzki, Channing Frye, and to a less extent, Vanderbeken.. they were all told not to shoot 3s at all in HS, and then were expected to shoot them without much game experience doing it?

good job Mac... maybe he has tougher backbone then Ham had. We needed a big man to back up Dendy and JVB. One more 6-8 or 6-9 kid and this would be a good recruiting year. Again, good job, Mac.

Oh by the way nega dudes, I am a Mac fan and proud of it.

That's nice. Most of us are Iowa State fans, and proud of it, rather than a fan of a specific coach.

Not saying that he doesn't have versatility, but come on, this is the coach talking about his recruits. He is going to pump him up all he can. What is he going to say? Yeah, he is not very skilled, can't shoot well from beyond 5 feet, not a very good athlete.

I like this kid a lot but am not going to believe everything a coach says a bout his recruit.

i count more then 10 ahead of him from california, oregon, and washington. that's not including arizona, so i don't get how they have him as the 3rd best either.

#4 josh smith from washington
#6 jeremy tyler from california
#7james johnson from california
#17 john gage from washington
#23 john mcarthur from california
#33 brandon cataldo from oregon
#43 john ryan from california
#55 steven adams from california
#57 dennis cramer from california
#65 reggie murphy from california
#71 dj haley from california
#72 jordan railey from oregon
that makes him 11th best on the west coast, 72nd best center overall.

Railey looks good and all but i cant help but notice that he doesnt seem to be all that athletic?? am i missing something...he seems to be like another JVB than can hit perimeter shots and can somewhat post up down low. But it sounds like he is a much better shot blocker...lets hope!

It's been noted quite a few times that Jordan has really grown into his body over the past year. Those rankings were out before Jordan had the chance show what he could do.

Channing Frye is the only American on your list the others had a different kind of hs experience, but its not uncommon for players to develop a shooting touch during their career, maybe something Jordan has already begun?
