Recruit Lists v2.0

Good thing we're in on a bunch of them.

Most will go away fast when Fred's not the HC anymore.

At the very least they're going to want to see if TJ can coach (assuming he's hired) before committing.

It's a totally different pitch for TJ to say "come here and play for Fred" than it is for him to say "come to ISU to play for me".

Bridges, Coffey, Cook all are off the board the second Fred leaves.

Maybe the Greek kid from Wisconsin will be loyal to TJ? He would be a huge win.

link?

Yeah big names aren't going to commit for a first year coach at ISU who doesn't have the same cache as Hoiberg. The thing is they need to worry about the roster this year first bc if GT goes then that's 3 open spots and no back up big.

Just what I've heard, but it's pretty clear that we were only in the mix with Coffey because of Fred. Bridges isn't coming regardless of what Fred does.

Cook is a possibility, but it will be an uphill climb.

Exactly, and TJ has other targets. I'm not trying to be hard on you but posting in a manner that leads other posters to believe that these guys were ours to lose doesn't do anyone any good. It's not even committing time for 2016's yet.

As much as I think TJ may do a decent job "coaching" the team, we really do need someone with some experience and a reputation to keep the momentum going while TJ drums up the interest for them at ISU. I think Coffey is a true possiblity regardless being from MN, Bridges maybe only if we lucked out and got Hornacek...The others, no idea....

normally losing a coach of fred's caliber, i'd think "man, this is going to kill recruiting." but even with fred, we weren't exactly lighting it up on the reccruiting trail. sure we're "in" on some talent, but its not like we have any commitments or anyone close to commiting.

i'm sure GT will stay in Greece and go pro, and i wouldnt' be surprised if we lose one more from our current roster. the next coach will have about a gazillion scholarships to work with for 2016.

This is the big problem for the next guy walking into the job. We need an entirely new roster in 2016.

Does Fred really actively recruit?

Yes, Tyler Cook said he and his mom were talking frequently. Other past recruits had said similar things. He was reported to go to AAU events pretty much all spring and summer in the past.

I think a TJ and 100% committed Hoiberg combo could have hauled in some monster classes in the next few years. We will never know.

Too soon?

I would be very, very surprised if anyone other than Tsalbo leaves. Does the next coach have work to do for 16-17? Absolutely, but no different no matter who the coach is. Let's be honest here...the 15-16 team (Morris, Niang, McKay, Naz, Matt, Nader, Cooke, Burton, Noskowiak) will be able to coach themselves and win a lot of games. That group of guys is just too smart not to. I mean, there are probably 2-3 future coaches (at least) on that roster already.

For 16-17, we will still have (most likely, and I'm going worst case scenario):

- Matt: Senior shooter, above average rebounder and improving defender
- Cooke: RS JR combo. Granted, we don't know how he will bounce back, but I think he will be fine
- Burton: RS JR slasher/bruiser
- Babb: RS SO slasher
- Noskowiak: SO PG who will have a full year learning from one of the best in the country under his belt

That's a damn good core (should be). Where is the size, you ask? We have brought in all (I think) of our bigs over the last 5 years, save Georges, via transfer. I would not expect that to change right away, considering the guy who I believe will be the next HC hatched the idea of targeting transfers in the first place. Not to mention who he may add to the staff.

Take a deep breath.

I get what you're saying, but that same group (more or less) just lost to a Sunbelt team in the first round. Let's not pretend that a top 10 ranking in May automatically means you go deep in the tourney regardless of who your coach is.

There is a reason why coaches make what they make.

Yep...**** happens. That group of guys will be a year older, wiser and, you better believe, carry a MAJOR chip on their shoulder.

All I'm saying is, assuming the guys perform how we all know they can next year, if a new coach was at the helm for it, that's a pretty good story for future recruits, no? Especially if said new coach, and presumably one new staff member (at least) love the recruiting game?

The problem is, we better hope the new coach (or present coach), can get some JUCO's or good freshmen bigs for 2016 because its looking more and more like the NCAA wants to do away with the immediately eligible grad transfers. That would suck for whomever is the coach.

If that rule isn't passed this year, it wouldn't probably affect next year anyway. We better pray that we can take 1-2 immediate transfers next year, unless we somehow land 1-2 sit out transfers this year.

Yes, it would...no matter who the coach is next season. That's why a killer or two on the recruiting trail is essential.

Even if they keep the rule, the competition for transfers has greatly increased. It's not just us, Oregon and a few other schools going after these guys now. It's michigan st, Arizona, Kansas, even Duke now.
