Isn't it odd how on your 21st birthday your friends take you out and try to kill you via alcohol poisoning?
Years ago a young lady that worked for me went to Des Moines with her friends to celebrate her 21st. They had to stop at about 1am for her to get out of the car to throw up and they got tired of waiting and just left her in someones yard. She fortunately was aware enough of the situation and went to the house for help. They let her in and she had to call her boyfriend to come down and get her. Lucky for here those were some really nice people. I couldn't believe it when she told me that story the next week.

those are not nice "friends".

New experience on the Relay this year:

The allergy stuff appeared in my favorite pair of shorts before running Saturday morning. Anyone driving just a few miles outside of Stratford (though there wasn't anyone) around 5 AM would have had nice view of me changing my pants on the shoulder of the road.

Later travellers would have seen me applying lotion to places or Biofreeze to a mildly strained muscle. Many new things happened right behind the truck on Saturday with me and my pants.

Sunday became the first run where I ever stopped to pee. Hopefully, I picked the right spot. I can't really imagine a public urination ticket coming my way from Dyersville. I don't think that place is camera'd up.

Just been getting bits and pieces of this. What was this relay? How far did you run at a time and how many times/days?

Depending on the answers I reserve the right in advance to maybe call you crazy, okay.

Relay Iowa!: http://www.relayia.org/

We had someone who insisted us into some stupid planning, so we doubled up on what people could/should handle for this (many novice runners), and my half of the team was lucky enough to miss all the provided meals, because the plan was awesome.

Depending on weather, we ran 1-2 miles at a time, 6-12 times over the 10 hours.

I had a bunch of noobs who never learned to run in my half of the team. Their ears also don't work, so we were just a stupid bunch.

And it's all crazy. That part's a given.

Challenging cowgirl records here:

Met more locals along the route than ever before. The Relay rerouted its course outside of Ellsworth this year from the highway to the gravel roads. While I waited for one of my runs, a farmer left his machinery to walk over and tell me how much he appreciated the rerouting. He had a near-miss with a runner last year while driving a huge truckload of dirt.

An auctioneer in Dyersville pulled over while we were parked at a driveway at the edge of town. We thought we were parking in his driveway and he was upset, but he came over to ask what all this running was about. I told him about the orphanage in South Africa and he almost cried and thanked us for the good work.

I hated the "teamwork" aspect this year, since it was absent, but meeting the locals really made some wonderful experiences like that. Also, running with Z in Ellsworth did a lot, too.

Poor guy couldn't even go with us to the Pancake meal Saturday morning. So Z and I went to the library and went home.

Has anyone seen the new Beauty and Beast movie? I put my name on the list at the library. Do you think it would be too scary for Z?

I remember the cartoon one having scary wolves in it.

I'm pretty sure they are pro-public urination in Dyersville.

I like the changes in weather. That was one of the reasons I decided we could never live in Vegas. Different levels of hot all year and we may get an inch of rain in August. F that. Give me hot, cold, rain, snow, floods, tornadoes. I don't wish anyone to get hurt. I just want change.
I like changes in weather also. I just don't do HOT-HOT-HOT well anymore. I've been campaigning for a retirement home in northern Saskatchewan or the Yukon (Alaska is too expensive)!

Yah, you crazy. :)

How many people should you have had on your team and how far and how often would good planning have had you run? Old runner is all:

No worries, I am far too old to audition for your 2018 team, just find it interesting.

We had the max of 12. In my group of 6, only 3 of us ran to prepare, and only 1 of us really understood anything about recovery and nutrition and all that.

Also, my thanks to the idiot who pushed us into this double plan. The Relay is broken into 11 legs, so most teams just alternate groups through the legs. This genius insisted on doubling that, ignored every single point I raised to it with the words "not an issue," and gave sweaty me the wonderful chance to wear the same sweaty underwear for 12-15 hours at a time. That's a great lingering effect, though I'm a fast healer, so it won't last forever.

I had so many good plans, but not enough to overcome the chaos.

My waxing and waning desire to climb up and clean the leaves and branches off my roof is approaching 100% wane. Biking sounds like more fun. Also do not want to rake the yard. I did sweep the driveway last night.

All of the tree cover here helped protect my hostas although a couple of my favorites took a beating. Not as nearly bad as a few years back when everything was fully hammered.

So, if I am getting this right, you should have a group of 6 share run a leg (say 30 miles+/-) then skip ahead a leg while your other groups runs a leg? I saw on the web site you need to have a planned pace. Since it is not a race to finish first what pace do you or should have used?

I'll pour another cup of retired guy coffee while you reply.

The scene with the wolves is brief, but fairly scary. I don't recall them showing blood or anything like that, but it made my daughter grab my hand. The end scene with the Beast fighting Gaston could be a little scary, too. Gaston fires a gun a few times, and live-action guns are quite a contrast to the big cartoony ones used in the animated version.

The scary scenes are pretty easy to see coming, so you could always cover her eyes when appropriate. That wouldn't take anything away from the rest of the movie for her, and she's smart enough to know that bad guys do bad guy stuff.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part. The music is really well done. Also, I'm not sure if it was because the movie was set in France, but there were a few musical numbers that reminded me of Les Miserables.

Saw it on the plane - first of all, not as good as the original. Just didn't enjoy some of the acting. As to the wolves, they are definitely more realistic than the cartoon, but I don't know that it was really more intense than the movie. The fight scene at the end was a bit more than the cartoon one, imo.

I'm not sure what your violence/scary tolerance level is for Z so as a non-parent I'd probably say watch it yourself first. You might even be able to find just those scenes on youtube or something and check them out first.

That's the norm. We ended up doing 2 legs in a row, which forced my team to miss all the provided meals and snacks, so we lived by grazing snacks like bananas and granola bars, but failed at taking in protein.

Need to maintain a 10 minute mile pace across the state to finish. The people on my side of the team were much slower but insisted on running more early than they could handle. They all got hurt, kept trying to plug along, so the rest of us had to skip some runs and drive ahead to make the finish on time.

So, 10 minute miles get you there.
You, me, and cowgirl could get a CF team started.....
