Phillip Fulmer interested per Cotlar

Coached under Johnny Majors for 11 years at Tennessee. Yeah, probably a stretch of a connection but who knows.

Good, I'm not interested in Fulmer. I don't want another guy from the south biding his time until he has a chance to get back there.

Never underestimate what an unappreciative fan base can do for a guy. I cannot see this as a job hopping opportunity, and if he did move on, I don't see him moving on for at least 5-7 years, and even that seems unlikely because he will be getting up there. I think he's the perfect age to finish his career here.

They were down this year, but he won his friggin SEC division last year.

Guy has only had 2 losing records in 16yrs at TN and averages a 9-3 mark through that time.

Anyone who doesn't support this hire is CRAZY

That said...I'll believe it when I see it.

Again, that's all looking into the past. The guy is on the backside of his career at this point, IMO.

If you want evidence of what I'm worried about, look no further than Johnny Majors.

In his 16 years at Tennessee he went 120-62-8, for an average record of roughly 8-4 with 3 SEC championships and finished in the top 10 3 times.

He ended at Tennessee on a 5 win season, and then went on to coach at Pitt for 4 years. His seasons there?
3-8
3-8
2-9
4-7

Marty saying no chance is actually the most credible evidence to date that this is a possibility.......

I like the idea, not sure it will get done, but he would bring some good attention to the program and possibly open recruiting trails that have not been open to us in the past.

I'm having a tough time understanding how any fan at ISU wouldn't be totally be blow away by this hire. After 15 years as a season ticket holder, I was thinking of not getting them in 2009. If we were to land him I would sign up next year and Pollard could name the price.

Re: Phillip Fulmer

I don't think he really "ran it into the ground". He won a national championship and had two "bad" seasons in which he still either made a bowl or had all-american type players on his team...that's not too "bad" in the books of ISU...

Fulmer went to the SEC Championship game just last year.

He's a total bumpkin, but has proven he can coach. Also, Tennessee's defense was outstanding this year and his DC is currently jobless. I understand that Miles may hire him, though. If Chavis comes with Fulmer, I am officially concerned about the Cyclones. Even with no Chavis, actually, I'd be concerned with Fulmer.

you and I agree.

Fulmer hire would create unprecedented excitement in the ISU program.

I'm not sure Jamie is looking for a guy that will use the ISU job as a taper-down toward retirement. I think he is looking for that guy who has a burning desire to build something. I'm not sure Fullmer is at that point in his life.

I can understand the concern, but other than Gary Patterson and Chris Petersen, who by all accounts we have no shot at getting, Fulmer has got to be the best option we've heard to this point.

I would rather have Gene Chizik back than Phil Fulmer. He's shady at best. He's past the point where he would be a passionate hire. He's had more talent at Tennessee than almost every program in the country and still didn't deliver results to match the talent. He's just not an ISU guy. He won't be the next coach at ISU, and we should be happy about it.

Fulmer would be unreal! Excitement would be crazy. Endzone would be done for the 2010 season.

I don't know that it will happen, but if Marty poopoo's it, that gives it credibility.

I think some people are WAY overestimating the motivation power of money. Some people (myself included) are much more motivated by a sense of accomplishment, a sense of legacy, competitiveness or even revenge.

I agree with this. Some coaches just like a challenge.

Right. The hope would be that he wants to build something that leaves a legacy for him at a place that didn't have one before.

Whether it's a real option, or just us having fun with something from Cotlar is very much in the air.

Right now, I would find this hire verrrrry exciting!

Another benefit to hiring Fulmer is I'd imagine there'd be heavy investment in the ISU facilities. Even if he only coaches in Ames for five years, he'd leave the program in much better condition.

Also, if he takes the job (I know, I'm getting ahead of myself) it would necessarily show a crazy amount of passion for coaching and wanting to succeeed. He doesn't need the money, that's for sure.
