On to Texas Tech

I can't speak to how Bowman is going to perform in Ames but he did break Mahomes freshman record for passing yards in a game. I've watched dozens of QB's come through Texas Tech's system and he looks better as a true freshman than any Tech QB in the last 18 years.

That doesn't mean I think his ceiling or arm strength is as high as Mahomes but Bowman has a better grasp of the system, gets through read progressions better as a true freshman than Mahomes or Mayfield. That doesn't mean I think he's better QB than Mahomes or Mayfield, just that he's better in game 6 as a true freshman than either one of them at the same points in their respective careers.

I do think Alan Bowman is a special QB and I think Kingsbury believes that as well. Bowman could be special and Tech could still lose by double digits on Saturday, I don't think those things are mutually exclusive.

Generally if teams tackle well in space they can really frustrate Tech. They don't stretch the field nearly as much as WV, OU, or OSU but try to hit big plays on the short crossing routes and underneath plays. I don't expect to see us blitz like we did against WV. Containment is key and I really like our chances to slow them down and frustrate their QB.

I agree that they aren't mutually exclusive, but records are made to be broken. Make no mistake, I am not belittling his accomplishments or his ability, but I don't think you can be worried about him and this offense right now. I see a lot of betting websites and thoughts that say he is going to make a difference and I don't think there is any reason to believe that.

Agreed on your analysis. The thought is that force long drives from Tech without making mistakes. I am betting on Bowman and this offense making plenty of mistakes against this borderline elite D.

We had almost 100 yards of penalties on offense, gave up a TD on a blocked FG and missed a FG and a XP.

The defense was damn near perfect, but the offense left points on the field.

I've rewatched both OSU and WVU, and the changes Heacock put in for WVU were really impressive. The deep safety blitz had Greir completely rattled - Eisworth has really stepped up.

As Jay Jordan pointed out before the game, WVU likes to attack the seams in the passing offense - so Heacock basically parked Spears/Hummel and Harvey on the seams, especially when they had 2 receivers to a side - and then brought pressure from the MLB and the safety, and Grier had no idea where to throw the ball.

Another difference between the two games is that against WVU we went to the 4 down linemen (brought in RS Fr Tucker Robertson next to Jamahl), especially in short yardage situations - and it stopped them every time. Hopefully Lima is back this week, in which case I wouldn't be surprised to see more 4 DL looks, especially in running downs.

Kingsbury's comments about running the ball are interesting - because TTU is the exact type of team that ISU usually frustrates and shuts down the running game. Even if they have some success early - they give up on it as the game goes on (WVU definitely did).

The defense is really dialed in right now and I think we hold TTU under 24, in which case we should win comfortably.

You mean the TT versus Houston game? Bowman had to because TT decided defense was optional. Houston's defense is average at best.
 
The thing that worries me about Tech is their WR's. Like us, they have tall WR's and I'm not sure if we've seen that yet this year.

WVU scored 35 offensive points (by half time). the final score was a pick 6

Tech played some really good D in the second half but were also aided buy a bunch of overthrown balls and dropped balls. Grier also refused to throw the ball away just like against ISU

Also, the TD that sparked the comeback was a total sham. 4 and long, QB scrambles and picks up the first down despite the fact he was pinned to the sideline by 2 wvu defenders. looked like they simply stopped playing. that ignited the crowd and tech scored shortly after and the the comeback was on. Football happens I guess.

You would have a great point if there were no Mahomes or Mayfield and if they never faced anyone worse than Houston and Tech's defense was equally bad or worse than the Mayfield or Mahomes era.

However, two current NFL starters played much worse teams than Houston with much worse Tech defenses and never threw for more yards than Alan Bowman. Dismiss it as you may but at least admit the context, Houston isn't a terrible team and Mahomes & Mayfield aren't scrubs.

David Gibbs(Tech DC) decided to play the CB's 10 yards off the ball in the first half. I'm not sure why, other than he was afraid of getting beat deep. WVU just simply took quick outs and curls to an easy 35 points in the first half.

Tech came out in the 2nd half in press man coverage and completely shut WVU down. Had Bowman not gotten injured in the 2nd quarter, Tech wins that game. Injuries happen.

Is Purdy better than Grier? I don’t know, but I know he’s better than the erratic Grier of WVU’s last two games. And regardless of that, Bowman and TT’s check-down style of play works better against our defense than Grier-Stills home run ball.

Grier is better than Bowman and I'm not sure how someone who completes over 70% of his passes and has better than a 3 to 1 TD to INT ratio is "erratic"

Despite the number comparisons, I think you have to go with Grier simply because he has so much more experience, and a much larger sample size.

It would not surprise me at all if ISU shuts Bowman and the TT offense down, and holds them to less than 20 points. The ISU defense has had almost everyone's number this year.

And that last block thrown by Wagnor, to spring Seneca into the endzone, was delivered at the 10 yard line. Only 2 yards past the line of scrimmage...

KK was the qb for TT in that game...
