Missing first few days of grade school.

No biggie. From about 8 to 16 I spent my summers in Texas, and always missed the first week of school. I never missed anything.

We actually had our daughter miss 3 days for us to go to the Dells last year. It wasn't the first 3, but it was the only time we could work out vacation for both my wife and I. You're daughter is what, 10? She's got another 12 years of school to go, I don't think 2 days are going to kill her.

It's not hard to catch up at that age. Just make a deal with her saying you'll take her, but she'll have to work really hard to catch up when she gets back.

I'm in the minority that thinks sending them to school should be the priority.

I don't think it's a bad thing to think this way, but the way I see it is this. It's a "family" thing. And the schools these days don't seem to have any reservations about letting the kids out for any number of other things during the year. There was one stretch of 3 weeks, during late winter, where my kid had 6 days off of school. Now granted, one of those was a snow day, but still, with teachers in service, parent conferences, Pulaski Day (yup, look it up) I don't see an issue with taking a kid on a family outing. At least for taking a day off of school, family seems at least equally important to me as a guy from Poland who made significant contributions to the revolutionary war Effort.

Your kid better worship you

I think he does, but he's still young so I'm sure he'll grow out of it

Really, we've had amazing times the last three year's at the tourney and those memories are what make taking him out of school worth it.

I have the opportunity to take my kids to the Dells for a song but it would mean that my 5th grade daughter would miss the first 2.5 days of school. I'm leaning towards "no biggie" but what does everyone think?

You can't go 2.5 days earlier?

And btw, what's the song?

Can I go.

It depends on your daughter. If she is doing well go for it. Most schools are too slow paced for high achievers and they don't worry about your schedule as we found out this year. They are starting school Aug 13, the same day as the state fair. Lots of kids are going to miss school.

The first few days of school is like the Capital City League. You're just checking the new people out and nobody tries to hard. It's the same as missing syllabus day in college.

Send her to school. It's the dells. Why can't you go the week before?

Going with family who have already made arrangements and suggested we go. My youngest's school starts particularly early for some reason.

To repeat...a song is a term to mean cheap, very little money, etc...

We can stay for $68/night which includes the room and pass to all the parks.

You must be from Illinois...I remember when we moved there for 2 years we had never heard of this holiday but were pretty jacked that we got the day off from school for it
