I have the opportunity to take my kids to the Dells for a song but it would mean that my 5th grade daughter would miss the first 2.5 days of school. I'm leaning towards "no biggie" but what does everyone think?

I'd take my daughter, no doubt. Talk to the school and see if there's anything she should do to make up those couple of days.

Family vacation or 2.5 days of 5th grade, there really shouldn't be much to think about.

Bingo!!

We've taken our son out of school the last three years for the Big 12 Basketball Tournament which has fallen the week before his school's Spring Break. He loves it...2 weeks off...woot woot!

We took a Disney/Orlando vacation the first week of school. Kids were in 1st and 5 grade. First of all it was great from the standpoint that Orlando was like a ghost town. We never waited more than 10 minutes for any attraction all week. Most of their teachers said they probalby learned more in one day of Epcot then the first week of school. Go for it!!!!

It isn't the 2.5 days that is the big deal. It's the fact that it's the first 2.5 days. Really, it depends on your situation. If your daughter knows the kids she will be in class with, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Either it better be a REALLY good song, a really long song, or both, for it to take 2.5 days!?

I agree. The first few days usually consists of getting to know the teacher and the other kids in class. If she is comfortable with missing that, you'll be fine. Otherwise, you might want to find another time. What does she think about missing the first couple of days?

For a song is an idiom. I assume you were joking but if you weren't...

for a song
very cheaply This is one of my favourite pieces of furniture and I got it for a song in a market. Property prices have come right down - houses are going for a song (= being sold very cheaply) at the moment.

I know as a kid I'd be a little nervous worrying about what I was missing. I may not say it to my parents, but I'd be nervous...
