Don't want. Why would we want an assistant that we are just "hoping" will stay for a year or two? What is he going to bring to table... This is not a Fred situation(an unproven head coach). TJ is no Lutz or Sadler that needs to help Prohm to his feet wet. If he does stay and then bolts for another assistant job... Will he take his recruits with him? Keeping him would be a set back for the program in my opinion.

You must have missed the part where Fred said TJ was in charge of scouting reports and a major contributor to the X's & O's. But that wouldn't fit your narrative.

TJ responsible for getting a majority of our current roster in some way shape or form... if we lose him, I could easily see Thomas, Noskowiak, and Georgios follow. Wouldn't affect this years team much, but as far as our future... we would have none.
He and his wife just bought a home in Ankeny. So much for Ames.
If he is purchasing a house, I suspect he will be here a few years, even with the strong housing market we are experiencing.

TJ is going to bring significant established P5 recruiting. He's got great connections. He's been an assistant coach in the B12 and P12.
There is immense value there!
I suspect the conversation with Pollard went something like this ... "I'd love to keep TJ Otz if he wants to be on staff. If he doesn't want to be here then I will fill the roster with my guys at Murray State."
Two of his assistants have been with him since he's been at Murray State. Will be interesting if either of them get the MSU job.
I think Otz will stay and be supportive. Otz has a real chance to stay and improve his name. If he helps Prohm a lot and ISU stays successful then he will likely be the one that takes over for Prohm if he leaves in 3-4 years. If he doesn't want to wait that long and bolts after a couple of years, he can get a job at a pretty solid school, so at least we had him and he helped us get a few good recruits. The last thing Otz wants to do is make himself look like a selfish headcase when he wants to become a head coach down the road.
Otz extended a lot of offers to the 2016 class so I think it's critical we keep him as long there isn't bad between him and Prohm. He needs to stay.

For me, it's having person on staff that the players are comfortable with, and hopefully someone to continue to promote Hoiball.
4 years under McD, only 3 under Fred. Maybe he would have "promoted" McD ball?
This makes me sad that I live where I live. My 700 SF one bedroom condo costs about as much this monstrous-sized home.
I think he (TJ) stays for a year and then makes a full court press for a head coaching job somewhere. Pad your resume working for McDermott, Romar, Hoiberg and Prohm. Good references, larger network.
Keeping him for at least a year would also be a smart move by Prohm. Helps with transition. Buy in by the players. Helps with recruiting. If after a year it isn't working then you move on.
The comment was about how is was going to coach - not the players that are here now. No one know how he would have coached. People just seem to assume he will have a Fred style. My point is that he spent more time under McD and twice the amount of time under McD+Romar than Fred... So that is quite an assumption to make.
I hope he stays, he knows the current players and Ames. He wasn't getting HC jobs as it is, so maybe living on $400K / year in Ames is ok???
Plus having two young kids, moving around the country is not a lot of fun. If they really like Ames and is able to help ISU continue its upward trend, he will get a HC job soon. Recruiting to 3 schools in a 4 month window may not look to good to recruits.

It's actually a finite thing, if you don't get players, you get fired.
First this needs to be Prohm's decision, TJ and all the Assistants will get paid if they get let go so while I will feel bad for them it is part of the business and Prohm need to be comfortable and have the full support of his staff from Day 1.
Reasons SP should want TJ on staff IMO.
1. Ease the transition with the new players as Otz has recruited most of the players on the roster and can be used as a go in-between if needed to get any issues ironed out. Next year is a big and potentially great year, misunderstandings leading to discontent would be a major issue and something that should be avoided if at all possible. Keep the young players from transferring out is a concern with any new head of the program TJ would help in that regard.
2. Recruiting the Midwest and North East. Prohm and his staff have done a good job building a program in the south and getting Mid Major and 3 star players but recruiting to Iowa State is a different animal. As far as I am aware SP doesn't have a lot of Northern Recruiting connections to AAU teams. Otz can help make those connections and get players to consider Prohm and his style right away, even if he would be looking to jump soon (No way any of us know what TJ's plans are right now. He may not this is a big curve ball from what he original agreed to).
3. TJ is looked upon favorably by the AD and many finiancial supporters of ISU, it would be a nice olive branch to extend right away to them to welcome Otz and help with introductions and how to talk each personality.
I hope TJ stays if only for a year and hopefully a few more and leave for his own coaching Job.

TJ would be crazy to leave now, for anything other than a head coaching gig. Take the high road, enjoy the ride on a potentially historic season, then if you feel so inclined after the season is over, start looking around for your next move.
