Jerry Palm's update (ISU still needs one more win) LINK

I also hate Jerry Palm, but I read his little blurb to mean that if ISU wants to be a lock we need one more. He didn't say we need one more to be in. He said we need one more to be "safe".

Exactly. That's all I was trying to point out with my comparison between Iowa State and Illinois earlier (and yes, clearly Iowa State has the better overall case than the Illini). There's 30-40 bubble teams that are bunched together with pretty similar profiles, or with offsetting strengths/weaknesses (such as ISU/Illinois). Iowa State right now is near the top of that group, and even with three straight losses to end the year they ought to be pretty high up. But to say that the committee is going to definitely see it the same way, especially when ISU has a not-insignificant weakness when it comes to quality wins -- I can't agree with that.

I think with three straight losses, ISU could be anywhere from an 8 seed to the NIT. Their profile (minus beating Kansas) is almost that of a very good mid-major team, and the tournament committee does weird things with mid-majors.

If someone's job is to predict NCAA tournament teams, and he's trolling instead of doing that job...isn't he 100000x more obsessed than any ISU fan?

My job is to design products and illustrations. If I were to do the opposite of that and just scribble on paper with crayons to tick somebody off what does that say about me? For one thing I'd get fired. For another I'd lose the distinction of calling myself a designer.

If he wants to troll he should call himself a professional troll instead of a bracketologist or analyst.

That's a bad comparison. His main job is to provide page views, and ISU fans have been helping him out probably as much as any other fan base lately.

I was just going by this

Thats at least what it says on the top of the bracket. Maybe Im confused.

Well if he updated it today then Palm really isn't that good at his job to say the least. He has Kansas St still as a 7 seed and has us as a 12 seed. If the season ended today there is no chance that we are a 12 seed.

To be honest I'm not sure why people are worried about the bubble. We will win at least 2 more games before the selections are made.

His definition of "on the bubble" must differ from mine. He has Seton Hall as a 9 seed, but says they're on the bubble. Personally I wouldn't simultaneously call someone a bubble team, but if they do make it, they're in the top 36.

Palm is a *******.

Why?

Didn't he say last week that Iowa State didn't have good enough road wins and said that's why he left us out?

Now he's saying we don't have enough top 100 RPI wins...really? What's next, our record against Oklahoma St. and Drake?

The guy has Mississippi St. and Xavier in and their RPI are around 50-60...Iowa State's is 34...

RPI is the first thing the committee looks at..you honestly think they'll leave a team with 21 wins and an RPI of 34 over a team with 19 wins that is on a major losing streak with an RPI of 68.

I don't know if ISU did something personal to Palm that is causing him to try to nitpick at Iowa St. but not at others..but it's pretty sad.

Fortunately the guy is in 27th place at Bracket Matrix, so he doesn't know what he's doing. People who know what they are doing have us as a 9 seed that will climb to a 7-8 seed when they update it.

Jerry Palm must be one of CW many alias'.

-Big 10 homer= check
-lack of respect for ISU= check

Pretty much everything we CF'ers hate in an "expert analyst"

All in an effort to spark interest on CF and bring more people here to discuss if we are a lock for the tourney or not....

Don't worry guys I'm on top of it, we all know what you are up to now Chris....

We haven't lost by 20 all year, I'm not too concerned about that starting now.

Yes, I am sure Jerry Palm is sitting there thkinking..."How can I troll Iowa State."

With the responses he gets in article comments and on twitter it's pretty easy for him.

No different than your local sports talk radio guys. Doesn't take much to get ratings by rubbing 1 team the wrong way when they are full of sensitive fans.

There is a reason I have never heard of this guy before this morning. He is clearly an idiot.

The idea that ISU needs one more win to be "safe" is a joke. A major conference team in the top 4 in that conference and an RPI of 31 and a win over the best team in the conference is NOT a bubble team. We are NOT a last-four team in, any more than Wisconsin is a last four team in. This guy is a complete moron and needs to be fired.

Actually, comparing us to Wisconsin is a pretty fair comparison.

RPI: 31 v 28
Both currently 4th in conference
Top 50 RPI record: 3-4 v 5-6

Except that Wisconsin is 0-4 against Michigan State, Ohio State, and Michigan. We've at least beaten Kansas at home.

Oh yeah, and Wisconsin is 0-2 against Iowa. ISU: 1-0.

Isn't anyone else a bit worried about this?

Here's our top 100 RPI wins: 6, 40, @40, 53.

And here's the top 100 RPI wins for Illinois, a team practically everyone has outside looking in: 4, 7, 19, @47, 80, @87.

We have a gaudy conference record, but I'm not going to be completely confident until we get one more quality win.

How come you didn't list each teams bad losses?

Jerry is NOT the final say, nor does he have a vote in the matter on the commitee. He is like 25 out of 50 for bracketologists predictions. I don't know if we are a "Lock" or not for the tournament but I do know that Jerry Palm is not the guy who puts us in or out.

If Ken Miller or somebody on local radio said they don't think the Clones are in the tournament would you be worried? Because that's all this guy is...a pundit....and not a very good one either. ISU is playing good ball right now and we will have to wait and see what happens the next two games and the tournament to follow.

I will also add he isn't a very good pundit either...just look at the guys track record for predictions HE SUCKS AT HIS JOB. Another interesting note is that old Jerry has a website he owns and operates for paying customers called CollegeRPI.com and this may be why he pushes the RPI angle of the selection process...just a thought.

Bracket updated on: Sun Feb 26 11:28:42 2012

Last four in: Last four in: Arizona, Washington, Iowa State, Texas
First four out: Close, but NIT (Not In Tournament): Minnesota, Oregon, VCU, Miami (FL)

Not saying ISU is a powerhouse, but according to him Northwestern gets in before us, and we barely beat Minny and Texas for a spot. Im not mad at this guy, just know never to look at any of his articles for non-biased reporting (nobody reads CBS anyway).

Oh and here is a good one from Twitter:

"Jerry Palm ‏ @jppalm Reply Retweet Favorite · Open
you say that like it matters RT @DBagsSoftball: "Iowa State fills holes in resume today." Do you know they're 3rd place in the Big 12?"
