ISU Fball Head Coaches

You should have seen Clyde Williams Field. New stadium and Olson building were big improvements in 1975. Every coach has more to work with today. Iowa State is better today with facilities. So is everyone else. It’s still a struggle. And look at NIL today. Uphill battle.

My first game was at Clyde. I don't remember it though to be honest.

You saw it go from decent to laughingstock. 89 we were 6-5 I think. That’s not bad.
1989 was an exciting season. Then, the bottom fell out from 1990-4. Yikes! Three huge wins over @ Oklahoma in 1990, Nebraska in 1992 and K-State in 1993 with a bunch of head scratching losses and the nail in the coffin 0-10-1 season in 1994.

Out of curio

Out of curiosity how old are you? Nothing against you but the younger generation has no idea how poss poor our facilities were back then compared to everyone else. I was an Iowa State ball boy and the locker room has rusty lockers in the old Okson building. It was like a high school in the locker room. Probably worse than some high schools. Mac finally got them to invest in facilities and I think the big 8 started to pressure teams like us to get up to speed. K State was really bad also. So our old coaches may have had horrible record but that was mostly do to us not keeping up back then. Campbell has way more to work with.
oh im "younger" i was bornnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn in 1991. september to be exact. i grew up attended a few iowa state games with my grandparents but cant say i was some die hard fan until i really attended iowa state

You never wished me happy birthday a few weeks ago, but your mom sure did. Boy did she.

They were really bad. What was also bad was we had a locker room with mice in the corners eating at shoulder pads, maybe 6 working showers in the locker room and no practice field. Our equipment was driven to games in a yellow-painted UHaul truck.

Those coaches were bad but ISU had zero idea of how to be good at football back then
Walden had "0" support and literally had to answer the phone, lost an extra 10 scholarships when NCAA lowered numbers and watched one of best players kicked out by administration (unfairly). The locker oom was not as bad as you described.
Mac's choice of assistants was his mistake. They green lighted him with the money he needed to hire what he needed. It is fact.

In an alternate world where Walden has support, he wins.

Plus he was working against an NCAA rule that literally didn't allow him to have a full roster because you could only replace the number of guys you lost but capped at 25 so once you were down scholarships there was no way to ever get back to 85. They changed the rule towards the end of his run but it was too late.

'Hey Jim, you're a great guy with a great personality. Here's 7 raspberries and a length of string, now go win big on a Big 8 schedule.'

Long tenure can mess with the numbers IMO. I heard last week that Belichick is like 18 wins away from haveing the most wins as an NFL coach. But, he is only 9 losses away from having the most losses.
that may be true but he's still got a 66% winning percentage in 29 years.

56 wins? I knew it wasn't exactly Ohio State's or even Okie Stat's history but 56 wins ? That kinda stings a tad. Cool that CMC will hit 100 games (hopefully 101) this season.

That table is incomplete as it doesn't even include Clyde Williams. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_State_Cyclones_football

Thankyou for the correction. I thought their were a few in the .700 winning percentage or higher, including Williams. Long time ago though.

Two things stand out, above what others have said. 1) Coaching 8 seasons or longer is a rarity at ISU! Only 4 people have done it and one was Jim Walden! 2. Joe Meyers and Homer Hubbard are our two best coaches in terms of winning percentage! That's right! Who? Bert German, A.W. Ristine, Ira Brownlie, Clyde Williams, and Pop Warner are our top 5 highest "winning percentage" coaches.

At least I have heard of Pop Warner and Clyde Williams.
