ISU Fball Head Coaches

Walden had "0" support and literally had to answer the phone, lost an extra 10 scholarships when NCAA lowered numbers and watched one of best players kicked out by administration (unfairly). The locker oom was not as bad as you described.
Mac's choice of assistants was his mistake. They green lighted him with the money he needed to hire what he needed. It is fact.
Steve Lester?

You should have seen Clyde Williams Field. New stadium and Olson building were big improvements in 1975. Every coach has more to work with today. Iowa State is better today with facilities. So is everyone else. It’s still a struggle. And look at NIL today. Uphill battle.
When we played in Clyde Williams, our coaches had offices in the old State Gym. It boggles the mind to think about it.

I was a student during the Duncan and Criner years. I don’t know how much other schools were cheating, but ISU football was over the top. Alex Espinosa cruised campus in a red Corvette. People don’t believe this, but may I be struck down where I stand if untrue, I saw Dwayne Crutchfield driving a Winnebago RV on Welch Ave going towards the Towers, with a significant amount of “company”. Good times, but not for poor Jim Walden, who paid the price for prior transgressions.
Maybe he got it when he was at Waldorf.

its v. sad that McCarney is considered one of the greatest of all time coaches at iowa state with a 39% winning %.

that just how sad the history of iowa state football is
He proved that you can be successful at Iowa State. That was a huge contribution.

Nah, he was done either way IMO. That just sped up the announcement by a week, firing him after KSU instead of after the last game.

Maybe if he'd gotten the W at KSU and at WVU they mightve been able to sell improvement off 5 wins, but 4 wouldve been a stretch. The fanbase was checked out.

Agreed,

I have a hard time thinking one play would make a difference in that decision, regardless of how bad it was. I think Jamie utilized the climate that mistake created. Firing him the next morning made Jamie look like a hero and decisive. It also mitigated any kind of negative response from Rhoads apologists.

I'll never forget being at the game, deciding to walk out when it should have been "over", only to be lured back by the erupting crowd. I don't think I've ever been so shocked by a coaching decision, nor as apathetic to watch the end of the game.

So, we have the greatest coach in ISU history and there are people on this site that say the rot has set in.

Sometimes change is needed, simply because the voice has grown old and/or the coach's perspective becomes less objective.

When a new coach comes in they tend to look at the program with objective and fresh eyes. Over time they sometimes become defensive when it's THEIR mistakes, lose objectivity when assessing coach performance due to nepotism, and simply get stuck in their own rut. I think it's fair to say Campbell has fallen victim to 1 and 2 to at least some degree, and that's not a positive thing. Saying so doesn't mean he's not a good coach or wasn't the right man for the job when he was hired.

I dislike Ferentz with a passion but it's hard to say he hasn't been a great football coach for Iowa. He's been wildly successful on the overall and they couldn't have hired a better coach for that job (at the time they hired him). But it's been obvious over much of the last decade that he has issues with nepotism and fixing the mistakes within his program. When a coach gets to the point of choosing those things over his job (consistently) it's time to go. Campbell (finally) fixing special teams and making some changes makes me feel a little better about his program objectivity. But lets not act like some of the criticism wasn't warranted (it was).

Walden and Criner are at least in the conversation for beat downs.

Mac got 70 hung on him a couple of times by Nebraska.

He's also the owner of the one-for '97 team. They were BAD.
That was my sophmore year. That win was over a horrible Baylor team and the last time the goal posts ever got taken down by fans too. The administration beefed up the posts. Fans have bent the bars but never broken them since.

1989 was an exciting season. Then, the bottom fell out from 1990-4. Yikes! Three huge wins over @ Oklahoma in 1990, Nebraska in 1992 and K-State in 1993 with a bunch of head scratching losses and the nail in the coffin 0-10-1 season in 1994.
Walden was a GD national treasure.

We literally had the most distracting offseason that I can ever remember. AND it all played out like a month before the season started. One of our losses was due to a lot of players being extremely sick. Adjustments may have been made but I don't attribute any of the early season failures to Coach Campbell. I for one hope he stays at ISU for a very long time.

Wait until you see our conference records…almost unbelievable that ONE coach has more than 1 season of winning 5+ conference games.View attachment 118574

It's splitting hairs, but 4-3 is slightly better % than 5-4. But on the other hand 8-1/6-3 added to the 5-4 seasons and that's overall more consistent success (Bruce going 4-3/5-2/4-3 is closest).
