Is golf a sport?

I just don't understand how anyone can argue this. Just because it takes less physical ability to perform than most sports, shouldn't mean that the PROFESSIONALS aren't athletes. Sure weekend hacks I wouldn't consider athletes, but to perform at the top level you have to be an athlete. 10 years ago, you may have had an argument, but today every golfer is hitting the gym just as much as they are the driving range.

If baseball is considered a sport, then golf should be...

Yes they are different but the two have some odd similarities.

Hiking is more of a sport then golf though...conditioning is harder then swinging a golf club anyday

Golf is not even in the same league as baseball. A golf and a DH might have something in common, but the DH's job is a lot harder. I golf and it's towards the bottom of the "sports" totem pole.

I think of golf as an activity. I've never had to pay to go across the street to hit balls, or to go down to the gym to shoot balls, or to go out back and throw the football around.

Hiking is a mode of transportation. There is little to no skill invovled in walking (hiking), whether it be up a hill or through an uneven grassy field. Golf at least has quite the abundance of hand eye coordination. Does that exist in this "hiking" you speak of? Your eyes on the stick your hand is holding to guide you on uneven surfaces (get your mind out of the gutter fellas)? While it may be enjoyable to some, most certainly not a sport.

When did this turn into horrible comparisons day?

What is your definition of a sport and athlete? I odn't think there's any question it is a sport. I would say this as far as the athlete argument. If you define an athlete in terms of how fast they run, how strong they are or how high they can jump then I believe you are missing the point. I would say the definition of an athlete is someone who competes. There are many people that play recreational basketball, tennis, baseball etc. for fun, but they do not excel; it's the same as golf. The difference, I believe is that it is much harder to have a career in golf. Look at how many players are in the MLB, NBA and NFL then take a look at the PGA Tour. There are roughly 125 golfers exemt on the PGA Tour every year. There are about 420 in the NBA, a ton in the NFL and a ton in the MLB. Tennis I would assume is very comparible. I just think it takes a lot to get from a great golfer to a professional golfer than can make a career of it. I know there are pro golfers that aren't on the tour, however there are plenty of other pro basketball, baseball and football players. I would say that more people golf than the others and less ever make it big. I think the reason for that is that physical ability alone doesn't give you an advantage. Unlike most other sports, it is proactive. Every shot is a shot to make. In other sports, there is a lot of reaction not neccesarily proaction. Golf also requires a lot of mental toughness as you have however long you want to think, you don't simply physically react. Just my two cents.

sorry....Hiking is TOUGHER to do than golfing...

I suppose some of you haven't actually had physical conditioning for a while since college I assume...but hiking is still tough even if you walk.

Golf has the same similarities as going to the local Y and lifting weights and then swing a couple times and call it good.

I think what I was getting at was that there really arent many "sports" that you have to pay to play. Sure you might have to pay for equipment but rarely to actually participate in.

Baseball is 2 people playing catch and everyone else standing around. 3 minutes of action crammed into 3 hours.............I'd rather watch paint dry.

Last time I checked Motorcross has some of the best athletes. Control a 200 lb bike like that takes muscle, endurance, talent and learned skills. The heart rate of a motorcross rider is one of the highest for the longest period of time compared to most other sports. Just sayin...........

Golf rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, Golf is not a sport. If a 59 year-old can almost win a tournament it's not a sport.
