Is golf a sport?

Tiger is arguably the most athletic looking golfing, but his athletic ability doesn't compare to that of most major league baseball players.
Athletic ability in what respect?

I play tennis. You cannot be an elite men's tennis player without being in fantastic shape. You can't be in the top 1000 without being in fantastic shape.
I see fat baseball players in the major leagues all the time...

I don't know about the men, but there was just the big deal last week about Serena being out of shape. I remember Seles, Davenport, Capriati, etc doing pretty well without being in great shape...

For every John Daley there's a Prince Fielder, but when you look towards elite players in each sport, I'll all but guarantee Albert Pujols is more of an athlete than Tiger Woods is. Tiger might be just as strong, but I'll bet Albert has better footwork, quickness, etc. Things that make you an "athlete". The one advantage a golfer might have is hand eye coordination, but hitting a ball that's on the ground is MUCH easier than hitting a 93 mph two seam that's moving.

You have to be very skilled at golf to be elite. However, I don't see many retirement communities with football fields lined around them, but there does seem to be quite a few golf courses in those areas.

Also, is this some Internet myth about Tiger's strength? Someone at work tried to tell me Tiger Woods could bench press 450 pounds (or over 400). I'll believe it when I see him 2 feet from me benching 225 - once. He is not that strong or ripped or buff or whatever.
Just like everyone thought Arnold Schwarzenegger was 6 feet 4 inches or taller. The man was barely 6 feet. It was all hype.

Sport = Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Golf is definately a sport. People don't pay to watch you mow your lawn, roof a house or dig a hole.

This is a dumb thread

Darts, pool, bowling? Sports?

You don't think Tiger can even bench 225? You've never seen him up close. Over 400 is a joke, I agree. 225 isn't much at all. I was way smaller than Tiger when I could bench 225.

yes, hitting the ball off the ground is easier than hitting a fast ball. But, hitting it to the left side of the green with a little draw into a protected pin and then sinking the 15 foot birdie putt, now that's hard!!!!!!
You do realize hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things in sports correct? Golf you are in complete control of that swing because your ball doesn't move. You can attempt to put spin on the ball to move it accordinly. Baseball you have to adjust to what the pitcher is throwing you, decide if it in the zone, and decide whether or not you're swinging all within about .47 seconds.
God it must suck to walk, or even get in a caddie, what tremendous athletes. :jimlad:
Tiger isn't an athlete? Phil isn't an athlete? Tiger looks like he could be a middle linebacker. Most of the elite golfers have an athlete's build, and are therefore probably athletes of some sort.

Agility, quickness, strength, speed, hand-eye coordination, etc.

You have to be skilled at anything to be elite!

And um, have you ever seen Tiger? If he isn't ripped, there aren't very many people who are. I'm nowhere near his frame and I can bench that.

Elite golfers are athletes, not the amateur/average joes....

Really Tiger and a middle linebacker?

:biglaugh: yes, they are so similar?

You are right, Tiger is in better shape:yes:.

Don't use the tiger comparison when comparing him to many athletes. He is a freak, Not many atheltes get up in the morning and run 5 miles or so like tiger does every day. Tiger is in much better shape than most baseball players, and he is definately in better shape that albert.

So you're saying track and marathon runners aren't athletes?

I'm sayin Tiger is in better shape than a ton of athletes. Basketball players run a ton so be in shape...So you'd call them track or marathon runners too?

I never called track or marathon runners non atheltes

huh? (to the bolded part)

Nope. I just find your statement rather moronic. You realize that theres probably a majority of athletes that run more then tiger does. List could include:

-Basketball players
-Soccer Players
-Track Runners
-Marathon Runners

Does tiger probably work out more then some athletes, sure, but to say a majority is idiotic.

Agility, quickness, strength, speed, hand-eye coordination, etc.
What about someone like Lance Armstrong? He only needs endurance and strength, he's probably not very agile and hand-eye coordination or speed don't matter on a bike, is that not a sport?

I agree - if you are skilled at stroking the ball, you don't have to be in tremendous shape to be a female tennis player. Part of the reason in that virtually no woman rushes the net anymore, including the Williams sisters. Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova had to be in much better shape, the way they played all over the court, than say Lindsay Davenport...
