Is golf a sport?

Is nascar a sport, is bowling a sport, is poker a sport, is pool a sport, blah, blah, blah, infinitum. Worthless thread that I already feel dumber for having read.

Awww, be a sport. Just play along. :)

Any game that you can drink beer and play at the same time is just that. A game not a sport. Horshoes, skeetball, cowchip tossing, Chutes & Ladders are as much of a sport as golf.

you can swing a club and drink beer at the same time???!!!

or do you mean have beer around while you play? Cause if thats the case; basketball isn't a sport.. same with football (hey we drank in the huddles) ... same as baseball... not a sport... those waits in the dug out offer way to many drinking possibilities....

Compare/contrast with baseball....

Golf has more swinging and probably covers more distance
Hitting a golf ball is a TON easier than hitting a baseball. Having a baseball hit at you is a lot more dangerous than swinging at a golf ball. Pitchers and catchers definitely have it worse than a golfer (argument could be made for corner infielders). Generally baseball involves more athletic types than golf. Golf is more mentally draining than baseball unless you're a pitcher or catcher.

Half my high school football team played drunk... What's that say about football?

So that's why there's so many elite golfers in the world, because it's so easy. I've always wondered about that.

According to every definition I could find, yes, golf is a sport. And according to websters, I'd say watching TV is probably a borderline sport. A particular activity engaged in for pleasure. Hell, that could be a lot of things I never really thought of as sports.

I think we've blurred the line between athletics and sport.

For every John Daley there's a Prince Fielder, but when you look towards elite players in each sport, I'll all but guarantee Albert Pujols is more of an athlete than Tiger Woods is. Tiger might be just as strong, but I'll bet Albert has better footwork, quickness, etc. Things that make you an "athlete". The one advantage a golfer might have is hand eye coordination, but hitting a ball that's on the ground is MUCH easier than hitting a 93 mph two seam that's moving.

Oh, my, now the thread derails.

You could pick guys from just about EVERY sport and say they aren't in "absolutely ridiculous shape."

I play tennis. You cannot be an elite men's tennis player without being in fantastic shape. You can't be in the top 1000 without being in fantastic shape.
I see fat baseball players in the major leagues all the time...

You mean Albert Pujols is better at baseball related actions than Tiger Woods? Do elaborate.

yes, hitting the ball off the ground is easier than hitting a fast ball. But, hitting it to the left side of the green with a little draw into a protected pin and then sinking the 15 foot birdie putt, now that's hard!!!!!!

A LOT of linemen in the NFL are fat. Are they athletes? Yes. Prince Fielder is fat. Is he an athlete? Yep. John Daly is fat. Is he an athlete? Yep. I'll betcha we all put the same person at the bottom of that list when you ask who the most athletic of the 3 is.

Tiger is arguably the most athletic looking golfing, but his athletic ability doesn't compare to that of most major league baseball players.
