How will the players react??

Matt Thomas just retweeted this. Can't see how the players wouldn't be hurt, but we are lucky to have such a great group of guys playing for ISU. They will rally around each other.

I think the tweet is referring to him staying at ISU to which he committed a couple of years ago. Everything else I've heard re: the players' attitudes is that they're focused on improving and are confident this is going to be a special year.

Thomas hasn't heard from Hoiberg since heading home two weeks ago. That's not uncommon when players leave campus after semester exams.
"I saw him a couple times in his office after his (April 17) surgery, and what Fred told us was that he will be back," Thomas said. "We're planning on him being back."
That, however, was before the Bulls – long-believed to be a future landing spot for Hoiberg -- were eliminated from the NBA playoffs.

So what were Fred's words? Did he say at that point he was planning to be back, or did he promise he was coming back. Your positioning seems to indicate the latter, but I haven't seen anything that didn't say it was the former.

This.
And I'm not sure how twitter fluent everyone else is on this board, but Matt didn't tweet that himself, he retweeted it, which actually makes a huge difference. Not to say that he doesn't believe it because he clearly does, but it's not like he wrote those words himself either.

no idea. just going by what thomas was quoted on. i'm sure there's another side to the story.

That is a quote from long before twitter was founded.

I can't speak to exactly what the players feel, but i have been a college athlete and and also a coach. I know what coaches say and what their role is in the lives of their athletes- coaches spend more time with these guys than family does. To think that they will simply "get over it" or "understand that it is a business", in my opinion, is wrong. I had friends that i counted on transfer, which affected our team. I never had a head coach leave- someone who is a father figure...but can imagine it is very difficult. These guys will have to move on, but i believe fred really screwed the pooch big time with this. again- he is the only winner, everyone else associated with this loses. I would call that the definition of SELFISH.

Which doesn't matter if you think you're going to be a one and done or a two and done. There isn't much middle ground anymore. There are guys that are going to leave early. There are guys that think they are going to leave early but end up not being as good as they thought they were going to be and transfer no matter who the coach is. Then there are 4 year guys that are going to stay at a school for 4 years and they aren't that good so we don't care.

Now there are some exceptions like Ejim and Niang, and if you find one them the coach is going to have enough success to get an extension fairly quickly anyway.

Most of the players we recruit will be 4 year guys. You need a 4 year contract minimum.

Anyone who questions Fred's integrity simply does not know him.

Do -you- know him? Of all Cyclone fans or even long time Ames residents, less than 1% can claim that they know Fred Hoiberg on a personal level. I don't think Hoiberg is some great manipulator who's been playing Cyclone Nation since his days as a player just to ultimately ditch us for the NBA. However, I would have to say that based on reports of how he interacted with players on this move that his integrity is definitely in question. Yes, it's probably what he had to do and he meant it as just business, but that doesn't mean it shows good integrity to tell his players he plans to stay while he is deeply involved in negotiating a deal to be the coach of another team.

Here's the thing: Fred Hoiberg is not the devil, we can all agree on that. What some people (I assume these are long time Ames residents who feel a tie to the Hoiberg family) who feel the need to defend him no matter what need to understand is that he is no angel either. His integrity is rightfully in question over his actions during this transition. Even people who are generally good sometimes act in ways that don't show full integrity, especially when it comes to securing jobs and promotions for themselves.
