How will the players react??

They will put on a good face publicly but I can guarantee you they are hurting and ****** to varying degrees.

I posted a couple weeks ago that a position coach that I was very close with left before my senior year. The job was a no brainer for him to take but I was still ******. This wasn't a head coach even and it stung really bad. Since I was a senior to be I was asked to be professional about the changes with the younger guys and build support for whomever is brought in among our position group. I put on a good front most of the time but I was still ****** about it and when I had a few too many drinks my true feelings would generally come out.

I'm assuming we will see similar reactions from the players. It's a natural response when you're 18-21 years old.

its got to be tough on thomas to have hoiberg tell him to his face he'll be back and then find out he was telling recruits he couldn't guarantee it.

I'd be surprised if that happened. Probably should have told the players no media at all out of the gate so quotes like that didn't happen

Thomas hasn't heard from Hoiberg since heading home two weeks ago. That's not uncommon when players leave campus after semester exams.
"I saw him a couple times in his office after his (April 17) surgery, and what Fred told us was that he will be back," Thomas said. "We're planning on him being back."
That, however, was before the Bulls – long-believed to be a future landing spot for Hoiberg -- were eliminated from the NBA playoffs.

I've treated this like any other personnel move that takes place in a workplace. Wide array of emotions. At the end of the day, everyone has to make the best move for their goals an interests, and sometimes situations and goals/interests change. It sucks and I hate it, but its reality.

It's a direct quote, it happened.

90% of what has been said through this process has been lies. If he knew Fred was leaving what was he supposed to say when asked? Probably didn't want to start a frenzy like Pollard did with his semi honest statements on the tailgate tour. Same with TJ's song and dance when he said he didn't know Fred's plans, he is still in charge, etc when he knew Fred was leaving.

Just weird to see what Matt had to gain from lying about this, why would be say what he said, then retweet this. He must have an agenda to make Fred look bad on his way out.

I don't think it's what you gain for lying it's more what you lose for telling the truth in this process. It makes Fred look worse if he is honest and says Fred is going to the Bulls when the Bulls still have a coach

I would have expected him to tell the truth. If he knew Fred was leaving what motivation does he have to not tell the truth? If one of the football coaches would have pulled this stunt when I was playing and I was asked about it, I would have told the truth. Why protect a coach that is abandoning you. For the record, when CPR left ISU to go be the D Coord at Pitt before my Junior year I was pretty ******. Then we got to play them in the bowl game and it made it sweeter to beat them.

I see your point, just seems like the same kid saying what he said, then tweeting this, means at least that one player felt like something wasn't on the level. Could be coincidence, could be a young guy that just upset. Either way, seems like Matt has his head on right and is focused on next season. We could all take a cue from him.

IMO Matt either knew Fred was leaving or at least thought he was. He was supposed to be honest and say that? I doubt he wants his name tagged to that bombshell.

He had other options though. If he actually did know or have good reason to believe that Hoiberg was going to leave at that point, he didn't have to say "Yes, I think he is going to be the Bulls' head coach next year, sorry to break it to you." All he would have to say is something like "At this point, the decision is in Coach's hands. I hope he'll stay, but I don't know for sure." The only logical reason for him to say what he did was either 1) Hoiberg actually did tell him at the time of the interview that he was planning to stay or 2) Thomas lied or stretched the truth in the interview.

We may never know but Fred leaving has been in the works for at least the last 2-months.

Or he could have... I don't know... said he wasn't told anything? Nah... that is to simple.
