Hilton Tonight

My husband was begging me to turn it to the football game at half time and I just shook my head and said something like, Just wait until they turn Hilton on.
Then, while cutting down that lead, I told him when it gets under 10, they're going to go nuts....

Your fans in your building are fun to watch. Great game and solid win Cyclones.

Season ticket holder for 7 years here's my rankings:

1. Iowa 2013- Loudest "moment" when Gessel chokes
2. OU 2014- Loudest extended period.
3. Iowa 2015 - Most improbable comeback and very raucous crowd
4. KU last year- Best overall atmosphere and hype with Gameday
5. OSU - Naz long buzzer beater- the most memorable hilton "moment"
6. Michigan game- Another great overall atmosphere- one of the best Non-con wins.

KU games the past 2 years have by far had the best atmospheres. IMO, I think last night was the loudest Hilton has been for an extended period of time. It's hard to tell though, sitting in different seats during some of those games.

Michigan might have been my favorite game though. So much hype and anticipation. Great atmosphere. Ejim returning. **** Vitale. The McGary sideshow. When we won that game, it felt like we had finally arrived. That we were legit. It shows too, because we've been ranked ever since.

Great first post. Welcome!

It's impossible to pick a best experience in Hilton. My first was the win over Danny Manning the year they won the championship (still the loudest in my mind, but then, I had never experienced anything remotely like it). Other games have been amazing in their own right.

I went to every big game from 10-11 through 13-14 (other than KU in 2013) and the loudest moment I remember is Gesell lining up for his last FT for Iowa in 2013. The overall loudest game was probably Michigan in 2013. Wasn't there last night but the crowd over the TV sounded fantastic.

Fran Fraschilla is spot on about the Hilton crowd. He said they will never let the team get out of the game and the crowd will never go away, but he also said that the crowd needs to see a 4-0 or 6-0 run out of ISU before really coming alive. When we get one of those runs though the place is unreal.

Of course the "old timers" think the old games were louder...they could hear then! :jimlad:

I've been going to games since 99'. The Oklahoma game was probably the loudest I remember hearing it. I was also in the nose bleeds vs down in the student section where it can be louder. For that game, no-one around me sat the second half of that game. Insanity.

I kind of feel like that Michigan game was the official rebirth of Hilton Magic. I know we were a tourney team before that, but that game was nationally televised, we had a good squad (didn't yet know how good they were), the McGary drama and Dickie V's first time in Hilton. It felt like the game that put Hilton Magic back on the map.

What is worse for the kid?
1) Seeing his team lose in heartbreaking fashion?
2) Having to listen to mommy tell him it was ok and that they only lost by one?

I cannot stand having someone try to calm me down when I'm having a "just let me vent" moment. Mom is probably lucky the kid is to young to throw profanities at her because she deserved a giant "**** you, *****! I'm ******* ****** off right now."

Of course, if mommy were an ISU grad it would be hilarious!!!!

The thing I liked about last night is there were times when we kept the atmosphere going during TV timeouts and didn't always wait for a big run or Jameel waving his arms at us. The place EXPLODED when Monte hit that shot and again when the horn sounded. There was a lot of random group hugging going on in section 206!!

Babb's dagger against KU in 2012 was special, as was the Baylor comeback and OSU winner from Thug Life. But I think you're right. That Michigan game was our true statement telling the nation that Iowa State was/is back on the map and their to stay.

As a student from 2011-2015, I'd rank the loudest moments in this order:
1. Threesus Saves
2. Gesell Missed Free Throws
3. Hogue dunk to pull the OU game within 1 (I think it was 1)

But in terms of overall atmosphere, the KU College Gameday game and Michigan game probably take the cake. I wasn't there last night, but it sure looked and sounded incredible on TV!

Before the game started when the Cyclone Power chant was going on, the broadcasters stopped talking and let the chant take over the broadcast for a few seconds. It sounded friggin sweet!

By the way, who had the Monte shirt on last night? I started cracking up during his interview.

Don't forget Johnny was in Hilton for that game too. There could be no rebirth of Hilton Magic without Johnny "birthing" it.

Completely forgot about that. Even more makes my case.

This was the first game my girlfriend (now wife) attended in Hilton. Talk about a way to make a first impression...she's a Panther grad who pays more attention to Cyclone sports now than UNI. She also never, ever, cheers for that other school out east even though her family is all Hawk and her brother is a grad. Thanks, Johnny, I owe you one.

My first "big moment" in Hilton was the Fizer "one more year" game against Okie State in 2000. We knew we were going to win the Big 12 at that point and I just remember jumping up and down in the aisle in one of the balcony corner sections. That year was like a dream come true for all of us. I was 10 at the time so I'd been to a bunch of games before, but my folks always got to go to the "big ones" like Iowa, KU. In my mind, it was as loud then as any KU game I've been to since, although I was younger so that memory might not be accurate.

If there was a Coppin State or other low-major game though, between '97-'04, I was probably there. Lots of Texas Tech and Baylor games too. Love those memories - anyone else remember a Maryland-Eastern Shore game during a blizzard with about 500 people there? One of the M-ES player's mom's was there and just yelled the entire game - it was hilarious and awkward when one of the refs kind of stared her down at one point. It was crazy to hear Hilton so quiet. Wish I could have been there last night. The current students have no idea how lucky they are.
